Epstein-Barr virus infection in salivary gland tumors in children and young adults.

BACKGROUND: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection has been implicated in the pathogenesis of certain subtypes of salivary gland tumors in the adult population. However, to the authors' knowledge its role in pediatric salivary gland tumors, a rare disease, has not been explored previously. METHODS: Thirteen cases of primary tumors of the salivary gland occurring in children were retrieved from the tumor registry at the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Clinical data were analyzed from the medical records and formalin fixed, paraffin embedded tumor tissues were examined

Fine-needle aspiration cytology of lymphoproliferative lesions involving the major salivary glands.

Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNA) is an accurate and cost-effective procedure for evaluating salivary gland lesions. Lymphoproliferative lesions may manifest as salivary gland enlargement. We report our experience with 43 cases of reactive and neoplastic lymphoproliferative lesions of the salivary glands evaluated by FNA, including 23 cases of reactive lymphoid hyperplasia and 20 neoplastic lymphoproliferative processes. The latter included 2 multiple myelomas and 18 non-Hodgkin lymphomas (small lymphocytic lymphoma/chronic lymphocytic leukemia, 1; small cleaved cell lymphoma, 1; lympho-plas

Salivary gland tumors: review of 643 cases.

643 cases of salivary gland tumors constitute two series of histological sections that were studied from hospitals and dental schools in Southeast Scotland and Southern Ontario. The Scottish series represented epithelial tumors of the parotid and intra-oral salivary glands, but the Canadian series also included tumors of the submandibular and sublingual glands. Classification was based on that recommended by the World Health Organisation (Thackray 1972). While direct statiscal comparisons between the two series are not appropriate, the differences between them suggest that malignant tumors are

Dose-volume histogram analysis and clinical evaluation of knowledge-based plans with manual objective constraints for pharyngeal cancer.

The present study aimed to evaluate whether knowledge-based plans (KBP) from a single optimization could be used clinically, and to compare dose-volume histogram (DVH) parameters and plan quality between KBP with (KBPCONST) and without (KBPORIG) manual objective constraints and clinical manual optimized (CMO) plans for pharyngeal cancer. KBPs were produced from a system trained on clinical plans from 55 patients with pharyngeal cancer who had undergone intensity-modulated radiation therapy or volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT). For another 15 patients, DVH parameters of KBPCONST and KBPOR

Increased neutrophil lymphocyte ratio and platelet lymphocyte ratio in malignant parotid tumors.

INTRODUCTION: Recently it has been reported that a high preoperative neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-lymphocyte ratio may be related to increased recurrence risk, tumor aggressiveness, and worsened prognosis in various malignancies. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this research is to explore whether neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-lymphocyte ratio in parotid tumors may or may not be used as a cancer marker. METHODS: This retrospective research has been conducted on a total of 228 patients consisting of 83 healthy persons and 145 patients with a mass in the parotid gland, who ap

Impact of head and neck cancer adaptive radiotherapy to spare the parotid glands and decrease the risk of xerostomia.

BACKGROUND: Large anatomical variations occur during the course of intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) for locally advanced head and neck cancer (LAHNC). The risks are therefore a parotid glands (PG) overdose and a xerostomia increase. The purposes of the study were to estimate: - the PG overdose and the xerostomia risk increase during a "standard" IMRT (IMRTstd); - the benefits of an adaptive IMRT (ART) with weekly replanning to spare the PGs and limit the risk of xerostomia. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifteen patients received radical IMRT (70 Gy) for LAHNC. Weekly CTs were used to esti

Lymphoepithelial-like carcinoma of the parotid gland: a case report and a brief review of the western literature.

BACKGROUND: Primary lymphoepithelial-like carcinoma of the parotid gland is a rare tumour with an increased incidence among Eskimos and Orientals. In these populations, it is usually associated with Epstein-Barr virus. In Western countries, salivary gland lymphoepithelial-like carcinomas are uncommon and only 14 cases have been described so far; among these, only five cases showed Epstein-Barr virus positivity. CASE REPORT: A 45-year-old woman was admitted to Siena Hospital for evaluation of a pre-existent (2 years) painless and tender submandibular mass, rapidly enlarging since two months. O

Synchronous bilateral multifocal acinic cell carcinoma of parotid gland: case report and review of the literature.

A 55-year-old woman presented with a 2-year history of slow growing painless masses in both sides of the preauricular area. Ultrasound scanning of the bilateral parotid region revealed multiple tumors in both sides of the parotid gland. After superficial parotidectomy, selective neck dissection of levels II and III were performed on the left side of the parotid gland, and superficial parotidectomy was performed on the right side. Histopathologic examination revealed both of the sides of parotid gland tumors to be acinic cell carcinoma. We discuss the clinicopathologic findings of synchronous b

Prioritized optimization in intensity modulated proton therapy.

In this work a prioritized optimization algorithm is adapted and applied to treatment planning for intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT). Originally, this algorithm was developed for intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) with photons. Prioritized optimization converts the clinical hierarchy of treatment goals into an effective optimization scheme for treatment planning. It presents an alternative to conventional methods that combine all optimization goals into a single optimization run with a weighted sum of all planning aims in the objective function. The highest order goal in the
