GABA(A) receptor diversity and pharmacology.

Because of its control of spike-timing and oscillatory network activity, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-ergic inhibition is a key element in the central regulation of somatic and mental functions. The recognition of GABA(A) receptor diversity has provided molecular tags for the analysis of distinct neuronal networks in the control of specific pharmacological and physiological brain functions. Neurons expressing alpha(1)GABA(A) receptors have been found to mediate sedation, whereas those expressing alpha(2)GABA(A) receptors mediate anxiolysis. Furthermore, associative temporal and spatial memor

Speech- and sound-segmentation in dyslexia: evidence for a multiple-level cortical impairment.

Developmental dyslexia involves deficits in the visual and auditory domains, but is primarily characterized by an inability to translate the written linguistic code to the sound structure. Recent research has shown that auditory dysfunctions in dyslexia might originate from impairments in early pre-attentive processes, which affect behavioral discrimination. Previous studies have shown that whereas dyslexic individuals are deficient in discriminating sound distinctions involving consonants or simple pitch changes, discrimination of other sound aspects, such as tone duration, is intact. We hypo

Triboelectric E-Skin for Robotic Perception of Hazardous Chemical Leaks.

The rapid identification of chemical composition, temperature, and dynamic behavior of leaked liquids by robots during accidental spills of hazardous chemicals would significantly reduce the potential risks to both human health and the environment. Here, we designed a flexible, palm-shaped liquid-sensing e-skin (PSLSES) featuring 128 metal electrodes fabricated via flexible printed circuit (FPC) technology and coated with a fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) film. By capturing the local triboelectrification signals along the droplet's trajectory, PSLSES enables multimodal dynamic liquid sens

Virtual screening of compounds for the development of thyroid hormone analogues for potential application in cardiac regeneration.

Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading global cause of mortality, largely due to the limited regenerative capacity of adult cardiac tissue. Thyroid hormones, particularly tri-iodothyronine (T3), have been shown to stimulate cardiomyocyte proliferation through activation of the thyroid hormone receptor alpha (TRα), making this receptor a promising therapeutic target. Here we report a hierarchical and consensus, multi-level virtual screening pipeline integrating Molecular Mechanics (MM), Quantum Mechanics (QM), hybrid QM/MM calculations, and reactivity analysis based on the Fukui function to

Spatio-Temporal Decoupled Knowledge Compensator for Few-Shot Action Recognition.

Few-Shot Action Recognition (FSAR) is a challenging task that requires recognizing novel action categories with a few labeled videos. Recent works typically apply semantically coarse category names as auxiliary contexts to guide the learning of discriminative visual features. However, such context provided by the action names is too limited to provide sufficient background knowledge for capturing novel spatial and temporal concepts in actions. In this paper, we propose DiST, an innovative Decomposition-incorporation framework for FSAR that makes use of decoupled Spatial and Temporal knowledge

From listening to verification: PDMP risk governance and the transformation of pain credibility in healthcare.

The 2022 revision of the CDC Clinical Practice Guideline for Prescribing Opioids acknowledged that recent opioid governance has produced chronic pain patient dismissal and abandonment, yet the institutional mechanisms that generate such outcomes remain insufficiently theorized within health communication scholarship. This paper examines how the textual infrastructure of risk governance restructures the conditions under which chronic pain is believed in clinical settings. Drawing on a text-based institutional ethnography of Georgia's Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) and the NarxCare

Hydrophobic Nanofiber-Reinforced Paper-Electrode Triboelectric Nanogenerator for High-Efficiency Mechanical Energy Acquisition and Autonomous Motion Sensing.

Flexible and wearable triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are considered promising candidates for mechanical energy harvesting and self-powered sensing, yet simultaneously achieving high output performance together with environmental adaptability remains challenging. In this study, a hydrophobic nanofiber-reinforced paper-based TENG (HF-PTENG) was developed by integrating (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES)-modified polyacrylonitrile/aramid nanofiber (PANA) membranes and a flexible conductive paper electrode (FCPE). The HF-PTENG delivered an open-circuit voltage of 384.3 V, a short-circuit

Integrative Migraine Therapy: From Current Concepts to Future Directions-A Plastic Surgeon's Perspective.

Migraine is a prevalent and disabling neurological disorder with multifactorial origins and complex clinical manifestations. While pharmacologic therapies remain the cornerstone of management, a growing body of evidence highlights the role of extracranial peripheral nerve compression as a significant contributor to migraine pathophysiology in selected patients. This recognition has expanded the therapeutic role of plastic surgery, offering anatomically targeted interventions that complement or surpass traditional medical approaches for refractory cases. From a plastic surgeon's perspective, op

High-Energy Pelvic Ring Injuries: A Comprehensive Imaging Review.

The pelvic ring is a closed, ring-shaped skeletal framework composed of the sacrum and paired innominate bones, stabilized by strong ligaments. It plays a critical role in weight transmission and provides protective enclosure for vital internal organs. Injuries of the pelvic ring represent a broad spectrum of injury severity, ranging from stable fractures to life-threatening unstable fracture-dislocations. Disruption of this ring can injure major vascular, neural, and genitourinary structures, with hemorrhage remaining a leading cause of preventable mortality in pelvic trauma. Although advance

Automation on the Plate Analysis from Yellow Fever Serum Neutralization Assays.

In the yellow fever studies, methods to quantify neutralizing antibodies are crucial and contribute to the development and evaluation of new antiviral vaccines effectiveness. The assay most commonly used for this purpose is the Plaque-Reduction Neutralization Test (PRNT), but this assay is time-consuming, not amenable to a large number of samples, and difficult to adapt to a high throughput routine. PRNT variations like FRNT and microFRNT were designed to mitigate these bottlenecks, but also tend to have large variations among different analysts due to visual plaque recognition and manual coun

DaedalusData: Exploration, Knowledge Externalization and Labeling of Particles in Medical Manufacturing - A Design Study.

In medical diagnostics of both early disease detection and routine patient care, particle-based contamination of in-vitro diagnostics consumables poses a significant threat to patients. Objective data-driven decision-making on the severity of contamination is key for reducing patient risk, while saving time and cost in quality assessment. Our collaborators introduced us to their quality control process, including particle data acquisition through image recognition, feature extraction, and attributes reflecting the production context of particles. Shortcomings in the current process are limitat

An iPhone application using a novel stool color detection algorithm for biliary atresia screening.

BACKGROUND: The stool color card has been the primary tool for identifying acholic stools in infants with biliary atresia (BA), in several countries. However, BA stools are not always acholic, as obliteration of the bile duct occurs gradually. This study aims to introduce Baby Poop (Baby unchi in Japanese), a free iPhone application, employing a detection algorithm to capture subtle differences in colors, even with non-acholic BA stools. METHODS: The application is designed for use by caregivers of infants aged approximately 2 weeks-1 month. Baseline analysis to determine optimal color parame

[Relationship between magnocellular function and reading skills in children: a study using visual evoked potentials].

OBJECTIVE: Developmental dyslexia (DD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. The magnocellular deficit theory is one of several hypotheses that have been proposed to explain the pathophysiology of DD. In this study, we investigated magnocellular system dysfunction in Japanese dyslexic children. METHODS: Subjects were 19 dyslexic children (DD group) and 19 aged-matched healthy children (TD group). They were aged between 7 and 16 years. Reversed patterns of black and white

Shigella impairs T lymphocyte dynamics in vivo.

The Gram-negative enteroinvasive bacterium Shigella flexneri is responsible for the endemic form of bacillary dysentery, an acute rectocolitis in humans. S. flexneri uses a type III secretion system to inject effector proteins into host cells, thus diverting cellular functions to its own benefit. Protective immunity to reinfection requires several rounds of infection to be elicited and is short-lasting, suggesting that S. flexneri interferes with the priming of specific immunity. Considering the key role played by T-lymphocyte trafficking in priming of adaptive immunity, we investigated the im

Visuospatial working memory impairment in current and previous ecstasy/polydrug users.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research suggests that ecstasy users are impaired in processing visuospatial information. However, for the most part, the deficits observed appear to involve the recall and recognition of complex visual and geometric patterns. The present research sought to determine whether ecstasy use was associated with deficits in serial spatial recall and visuospatial working memory (VSWM). METHODS: Thirty-eight current ecstasy/polydrug users, 16 previous ecstasy/polydrug users and 52 non ecstasy users completed serial simple spatial recall and VSWM tasks. RESULTS: Both the current a

Parkinson's disease: acquired frailty of archaic neural networks?

In Parkinson's disease (PD) many motor and non-motor symptoms are difficult to explain in terms of a purely ascending degeneration process as described by Braak. This essay proposes phylogenetic considerations for consolidating the multidimensional elements of PD. Subtle clinical analysis paired with ethological comparisons as well as patho-anatomical data suggests that disrupted automatic gait control, olfactory deficits, selected visual deficits, impaired emotional face recognition, and REM sleep behavior disorder could be due to dysfunction of phylogenetically ancient networks. Neuroanatomi

Gene family clustering identifies functionally associated subsets of human in vivo blood and tonsillar dendritic cells.

Human dendritic cells (DCs) are a distinct but heterogeneous lineage of APCs operating as the link between innate and adaptive immune responses, with the function to either maintain tolerance or trigger immunity. The DC lineage consists of several subpopulations with unique phenotypes; however, their functional characteristics and transcriptional similarities remain largely unknown. To further characterize the phenotypes and transcriptomes of the subsets, we purified myeloid CD16(+), blood DC Ag 1(+) (BDCA1(+)), and BDCA3(+) DC populations, as well as plasmacytoid CD123(+) DCs, from tonsillar

False-positive D-dimer result in a patient with Castleman disease.

In suspected cases of disseminated intravascular coagulation, concurrent elevation of both fibrin(ogen) degradation products (FDPs) and D-dimer levels aids in confirming the diagnosis. This pattern of results reflects the action of plasmin proteolysis of cross-linked fibrin polymers as well as fibrinogen. We report the case of a patient with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and Castleman disease who presented with a high-positive D-dimer level and a negative FDP level in the course of a workup for disseminated intravascular coagulation. This finding suggested the possibility of either a fals
