Desmoid tumors: clinical features and treatment options: a case report and a review of literature.

Desmoid tumors are a rare group of locally aggressive, non malignant tumors of fibroblastic origin that can lead to significant morbidity due to local invasion and may even result in a fatal outcome when located around vital organs. Their clinical presentation, biological behavior and natural history can be quite varied and is incompletely understood at the present time. The optimal therapeutic approach depends on various factors, and a multidisciplinary approach is necessary to achieve local control with acceptable morbidity. Despite progress in the understanding of these tumors and the treat

The adult children of alcoholics trauma inventory.

The Adult Children of Alcoholics Trauma Inventory (ACATI) registers variations in the recalled experience of growing up with problem drinkers. The ACATI includes measures of the duration and severity of parental alcohol-use-related problems, the drinking parents' behavior when intoxicated and sober, physical, psychological, and sexual abuse, and environmental factors. The ACATI correlated well with the Family Tree Questionnaire and showed excellent 14-day test-retest reliability for most variables. The test-retest was carried out in 2009 at a counseling service for young adults from families w

Abuse and dependence liability of benzodiazepine-type drugs: GABA(A) receptor modulation and beyond.

Over the past several decades, benzodiazepines and the newer non-benzodiazepines have become the anxiolytic/hypnotics of choice over the more readily abused barbiturates. While all drugs from this class act at the GABA(A) receptor, benzodiazepine-type drugs offer the clear advantage of being safer and better tolerated. However, there is still potential for these drugs to be abused, and significant evidence exists to suggest that this is a growing problem. This review examines the behavioral determinants of the abuse and dependence liability of benzodiazepine-type drugs. Moreover, the pharmacol

Thymoma classification: current status and future trends.

The classification of thymic epithelial neoplasms has been a controversial topic for many years. Recent advances in diagnostic methods and renewed interest in the biology of these tumors has led to efforts by investigators to shed new light on their biologic behavior and to offer novel perspectives on these unusual neoplasms. Several new classification schemes have been proposed, including the new World Health Organization schema for the histologic typing of tumors of the thymus. We review the current status of thymoma classification and comment on problem areas and future trends that may offe

A case of brain abscess by Eikenella corrodens in a HIV-positive patient.

We report the case of a 61-year-old homosexual male who came to our observation because of a recent onset occipital and left frontoparietal headache, weakness, anorexia, hyperosmia and hypergeusia and psychomotor slowing, apathy and fatuous behavior. This case, besides the old problem of the differential diagnosis of intracranial mass lesions in HIV-positive patients, induces one to examine more closely the relationship between HIV, brain abscesses and Eikenella corrodens. We suspect that the primary infection was in the oral cavity, since HIV-positive patients have a higher incidence of atypi

Using clinical and criminal involvement factors to explain homelessness among clients of a psychiatric probation and parole service.

This study sought to examine the rate of homelessness and the extent to which lifetime homelessness was associated with clinical factors, such as diagnosis and treatment history; or criminal factors, such as criminal behavior and arrest history, among psychiatric probationers and parolees. Nearly half of the clients screened had experienced homelessness in their lifetime. In a logistic regression model to explain lifetime homelessness, significant factors were younger age, less education, a greater number of lifetime arrests, a schizophrenia diagnosis, and reporting both an alcohol and drug pr

Management of obesity: medical treatment options.

Obesity is a common and serious health problem in the United States. Excess weight is associated with an increased mortality rate, as well as such risk factors as hypertension, hyperlipidemia and diabetes mellitus. Numerous treatments are available for obesity. Behavioral therapy, surgery and pharmacologic treatment have been used with varying degrees of success. Pharmacologic therapy includes primarily noradrenergic agents and/or serotonergic agents. Newer preparations are currently under development. Behavior modification, including regular exercise and the development of healthy eating habi

Internet gaming disorder and suicidal behaviors mediated by sleep disturbance: a large-scale school-based study in 135,174 Chinese middle school students.

Emerging research suggests a positive association between Internet gaming disorder (IGD) and suicidal behaviors. However, existing studies predominantly focus on suicidal ideation rather than suicide attempts and often do not adequately control for potential psychological confounders. The mechanism linking IGD to suicidality remains unclear. This study aims to assess the independent association between IGD and suicidal behaviors and to examine the mediating role of sleep disturbance among Chinese adolescents. We recruited 135,174 middle school students from Zigong City using cluster sampling.

From aggression to autism: new perspectives on the behavioral sequelae of monoamine oxidase deficiency.

The two monoamine oxidase (MAO) enzymes, A and B, catalyze the metabolism of monoamine neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. The phenotypic outcomes of MAO congenital deficiency have been studied in humans and animal models, to explore the role of these enzymes in behavioral regulation. The clinical condition caused by MAOA deficiency, Brunner syndrome, was first described as a disorder characterized by overt antisocial and aggressive conduct. Building on this discovery, subsequent studies were focused on the characterization of the role of MAOA in the neurobiolog

How foresight might support the behavioral flexibility of arthropods.

The small brains of insects and other invertebrates are often thought to constrain these animals to live entirely 'in the moment'. In this view, each one of their many seemingly hard-wired behavioral routines is triggered by a precisely defined environmental stimulus configuration, but there is no mental appreciation of the possible outcomes of one's actions, and therefore little flexibility. However, many studies show problem-solving behavior in various arthropod species that falls outside the range of fixed behavior routines. We propose that a basic form of foresight, the ability to predict

Sexual risk-taking behaviors, gambling, and heavy drinking among U.S. College athletes.

The purpose of this study was to empirically examine the prevalence patterns of sexual risk-taking behaviors (i.e., unprotected sex and having multiple sex partners) in relation to levels of gambling problems and heavy episodic drinking (HED) status among U.S. college athletes. Data from a representative national sample of 20,739 U.S. college athletes were derived from the first National Collegiate Athletic Association national survey of problem gambling and health-risk behaviors. Among college athletes who were sexually active during the past year, males reported significantly higher prevalen

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder symptoms moderate cognition and behavior in children with autism spectrum disorders.

Recent estimates suggest that 31% of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) meet diagnostic criteria for attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and another 24% of children with ASD exhibit subthreshold clinical ADHD symptoms. Presence of ADHD symptoms in the context of ASD could have a variety of effects on cognition, autistic traits, and adaptive/maladaptive behaviors including: exacerbating core ASD impairments; adding unique impairments specific to ADHD; producing new problems unreported in ASD or ADHD; having no clear impact; or producing some combination of these scenario

Maternal smoking in pregnancy and externalizing behavior in 18-month-old children: results from a population-based prospective study.

OBJECTIVE: The relation between prenatal smoking and child behavioral problems has been investigated in children of school age and older, but prospective studies in younger children are lacking. Using the population-based prospective Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study, we examined the risk for externalizing behaviors among 18-month-old children after exposure to maternal smoking during pregnancy. METHOD: Participants were 22,545 mothers and their 18-month-old children. Mothers reported their smoking habits at the 17th week of gestation and their child's externalizing behavior at 18 month

Positive screening for autism in ex-preterm infants: prevalence and risk factors.

OBJECTIVE: The survival of very low birth weight infants has increased markedly in recent years. Unfortunately, the prevalence of significant and lifelong motor, cognitive, and behavioral dysfunction has remained a major problem confronting these children. The objective of this study was to perform screening tests for early autistic features in children with a history of very low birth weight and to identify risk factors associated with a positive screening result. METHODS: We studied 91 ex-preterm infants < or = 1500 g at birth. Infants underwent conventional MRI studies at preterm and/or te

Depression ratings, reported sexual risk behaviors, and methamphetamine use: latent growth curve models of positive change among gay and bisexual men in an outpatient treatment program.

Although the cessation of substance use is the principal concern of drug treatment programs, many individuals in treatment experience co-occurring problems such as mood disruptions and sexual risk behaviors that may complicate their recovery process. This study assessed relationships among dynamic changes tracked over time in methamphetamine use, depression symptoms, and sexual risk behaviors (unprotected anal intercourse) in a sample of 145 methamphetamine-dependent gay and bisexual males enrolled in a 16-week outpatient drug treatment research program. Participants were randomly assigned int

Hostility, hostile detachment, and conflict engagement in marriages: effects on child and family functioning.

This study examined the relations between patterns of marital communication, child adjustment, and family functioning. Couples with a 4- or 5-year-old child were divided into three groups (N = 126) based on observed patterns of emotional communication: Hostile couples showed a cumulative increase in negative speaker behaviors over the course of a high-conflict marital discussion; hostile-withdrawn couples showed a cumulative increase in both negative speaker and negative listener behaviors over the course of the interaction; and engaged couples showed a cumulative increase in both positive spe

Perinatal anxiety and depressive symptoms and perception of child behavior and temperament in early motherhood.

The perinatal period is a vulnerable time for the development of psychopathology, particularly mood and anxiety disorders. In the study of maternal anxiety, important questions remain regarding the association between maternal anxiety symptoms and subsequent child outcomes. This study examined the association between depressive and anxiety symptoms, namely social anxiety, panic, and agoraphobia disorder symptoms during the perinatal period and maternal perception of child behavior, specifically different facets of development and temperament. Participants (N = 104) were recruited during pregna
