Translation and psychometric validation of the traditional Chinese version of the Western Ontario Rotator Cuff (WORC) Index.

PURPOSE: Translate the Western Ontario Rotator Cuff (WORC) Index into Traditional Chinese (WORC-TC), validate its psychometric properties, and adapt it to rotator cuff tears (RCTs) in patients who only understand Traditional Chinese. METHODS: Translation and psychometric validation were performed. A total of 210 patients completed the WORC-TC, Quick Disability of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (QuickDASH), 12-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-12), Numerical Pain Rating Scale (NPRS), and State Anger Scale (SAS) questionnaires. Construct validity and internal consistency were evaluated. Test-retes

The influence of the relative deltoid moment arm on active motion in patients with massive cuff tears.

BACKGROUND: The underlying mechanisms for why certain patients with massive cuff tears develop pseudoparesis are unclear. A recent biomechanical study described the Shoulder Abduction Moment (SAM) index, which considers the deltoid and rotator cuff moment arms based on a patient's specific anatomy as measured on a plain XR Grashey view. The purpose of this study was to clinically evaluate the correlation of pseudoparesis with the SAM index in patients with massive cuff tears. METHODS: This was a single surgeon retrospective study of 105 patients presenting with magnetic resonance imaging-diag

Arthroscopic additional biceps augmentation and biceps superior capsular reconstruction yield similar clinical and radiological outcomes for patients with medium to large rotator cuff tears.

Purpose: To compare the outcomes of additional biceps augmentation (ABA) and biceps superior capsule reconstruction (BSCR) in arthroscopic medium to large rotator cuff tear (RCT) repair. Hypothesis: Both ABA and BSCR yielded comparable clinical and radiological outcomes and retear rates at the 2-year follow-up in patients with medium to large RCTs. Methods: Patients undergoing ABA or BSCR for RCT repairs were included retrospectively between January 2019 and May 2020. The preoperative and postoperative Constant-Murley score (CMS), American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) score, subjective s

Patellar tendon autografts outperform fascia lata in superior capsular reconstruction: a comparative histopathological and biomechanical study.

BACKGROUND: In the treatment of irreversible rotator cuff tears, surgeons reconstruct the superior capsule of the shoulder using tensor fascia lata (FL) or various allografts to halt progressive joint degeneration. This study evaluated the healing characteristics of patellar tendon (PT) autograft vs. tensor FL autograft in superior capsular reconstruction (SCR), examining both biomechanical and histological aspects. METHODS: A total of 28 shoulders from 14 rabbits were used in this experimental study. Retracted tear models involving complete resection of both the supraspinatus and subscapular

Pathological formation of subcoracoid bursa effusion on magnetic resonance imaging studies.

BACKGROUND: The subcoracoid space includes the subcoracoid bursa (SCB) and subscapular bursa (SSB). We aimed to clarify the relationship between the presence or amount of SCB effusion and other structures around the SCB on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and to discuss the pathological formation of SCB effusion. METHODS: Medical records and MR images of patients who had undergone MRI examinations for shoulder pain were retrospectively reviewed. The presence or absence of SCB, SSB, and subacromial-subdeltoid bursa (SASDB) effusion was evaluated. If SCB effusion was present, the largest diamet

Risk factors of acromial and scapular spine stress fractures differ by indication: a study by the ASES Complications of Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty Multicenter Research Group.

BACKGROUND: Both patient and implant related variables have been implicated in the incidence of acromial (ASF) and scapular spine fractures (SSF) following reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA); however, previous studies have not characterized nor differentiated risk profiles for varying indications including primary glenohumeral arthritis with intact rotator cuff (GHOA), rotator cuff arthropathy (CTA), and massive irreparable rotator cuff tear (MCT). The purpose of this study was to determine patient factors predictive of cumulative ASF/SSF risk for varying preoperative diagnosis and rotator cu

Metallosis-Induced Conversion Shoulder Arthroplasty: A Unique Experience and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) can fail for several reasons, such as component loosening, periprosthetic fracture, instability, infection, soft tissue failure, or joint overstuffing. Severe metallosis without loose glenoid components after TSA may result in the need for revision to reverse TSA. CASE PRESENTATION: Four years before the current presentation, an 86-year-old woman suffered from right shoulder pain and swelling. The initial diagnosis was osteoarthritis of the shoulder joint, for which she underwent TSA. Four years later, she complained of shoulder joint pain, swelli

Retrospective review of open and arthroscopic repair of anterosuperior rotator cuff tears with subscapularis involvement: a single surgeon's experience.

BACKGROUND: There have been conflicting results when comparing outcomes of open vs. arthroscopic anterosuperior rotator cuff repairs with subscapularis involvement. The purpose of this study was to evaluate midterm outcome differences and complications following open vs. arthroscopic repair of rotator cuff tears involving the subscapularis by a single surgeon. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of 57 rotator cuff repairs involving the subscapularis performed by a single surgeon over a 10-year period. During this time, the surgeon transitioned from open to arthroscopic repair. Preoperati

Translation, cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the polish version of the Oxford Shoulder Score in patients undergoing arthroscopic rotator cuff repair.

BACKGROUND: The Oxford Shoulder Score (OSS) is a simple and reliable, joint-specific, self-reported outcome measure. It can be applied in patients with shoulder disease other than instability. The purpose of this study was to perform a translation, cultural adaptation of the Polish version of the OSS and to evaluate its selected psychometric properties in patients after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. METHODS: Sixty-nine subjects participated in the study, with a mean age 55.5 (ranging from 40 to 65 years). The OSS has been translated using the widely accepted guidelines. All patients compl

Synovitis as a concomitant disease in shoulder pathologies.

INTRODUCTION: Shoulder pathologies are often accompanied by rotator interval synovitis. This phenomenon is poorly described in the literature so far. The aim of the study was to analyze the occurrence of macroscopically visible synovial reaction in the rotator interval in patients with chronic shoulder pathologies and to perform a histopathological evaluation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, 167 consecutive patients undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery for chronic shoulder pathology were included (♀ = 45, ♂ = 122; [Formula: see text]54.5 years ± 12.8). Influence of dominant- as compared with nondominant-side symptoms on Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand and Western Ontario Rotator Cuff scores in patients with rotator cuff tendinopathy.

HYPOTHESIS AND BACKGROUND: The Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) questionnaire and the Western Ontario Rotator Cuff (WORC) index are 2 widely used patient-reported questionnaires in individuals with rotator cuff (RC) tendinopathy. In contrast to the WORC index, for which the items are specific to the affected shoulder, the items of the DASH questionnaire assess the ability to perform activities regardless of the arm used. The objective of this study is to determine whether scores on the DASH questionnaire and WORC index are affected if the symptoms are on the dominant or nondom

Aetiopathogenesis of cuff-tear arthropathy: Could juvenile joint laxity be considered a predisposing factor?

PURPOSE: Although many hypotheses have been formulated, aetiopathogenesis of cuff-tear arthropathy (CTA) is still motive for discussion. Since prevalence of CTA is notoriously higher in women, as is joint hypermobility, we hypothesised a possible correlation between the two conditions. METHODS: One hundred thirty-three (n = 133) consecutive patients with glenohumeral osteoarthritis [48 men, 85 women; mean age (SD) 72.32 (7.05)] were divided into two groups: Groups 1 (CTA) and 2 (concentric shoulder arthropathy) comprised 71 (22 men, 49 women) and 62 (26 men, 36 women), respectively. Correlation between anatomy of the scapula and the incidence of rotator cuff tear and glenohumeral osteoarthritis via radiological study.

INTRODUCTION: We conducted a study to elucidate the correlation between the anatomy of the shoulder joint with the development of rotator cuff tear (RCT) and glenohumeral osteoarthritis (GHOA) by using acromioglenoid angle (AGA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The AGA is a new measured angle formed between the line from midglenoid to lateral end of the acromion with the line parallel to the glenoid surface. The AGA was measured in a group of 85 shoulders with RCT, 49 with GHOA and 103 non-RCT/GHOA control shoulders. The AGA was compared with other radiological parameters, such as, the critical should

Biomechanical comparison of traditional anchors to all-suture anchors in a double-row rotator cuff repair cadaver model.

BACKGROUND: To further reduce the invasiveness of arthroscopic rotator cuff repair surgery the all-suture anchor has been developed. The all-suture anchor requires less bone removal and reduces the potential of loose body complications. The all-suture anchor must also have adequate biomechanical strength for the repair to heal. The hypothesis is there is no significant difference in the biomechanical performance of supraspinatus repairs using an all-suture anchor when compared to traditional solid-body suture anchors. METHODS: Using nine shoulders per group, the supraspinatus tendon was disse
