Sweet taste stimulation reduced pain ratings associated with increased blood flow in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex: A pilot study using NIRS.

Oral administration of sweet stimuli to newborns is effective at alleviating pain during injections. In adults, administration of sweet stimuli prolongs the latency in perceiving experimentally induced pressure stimuli as painful. However, experimental results for adults are mixed, with some negative reports suggesting that adults do not experience analgesic effects from sweet stimuli. On the other hand, we have investigated the effects of olfactory stimulation on analgesia using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), which measures changes in cerebral blood flow after olfactory stimulation. Task Structure and Construct Validity in the Neurobiology of Trust: A Systematic Structural Synthesis.

The neuroscience of interpersonal trust has expanded across functional magnetic resonance imaging, electroencephalography, functional near-infrared spectroscopy, pharmacology, genetics, physiology, and brain stimulation. Although this literature implicates distributed reward-, salience-, mentalizing-, and executive-control systems, findings are often difficult to compare because nominally similar Trust Game paradigms differ in their task architecture and analytic definition of trust. Here, we provided a PRISMA-guided systematic structural synthesis of 198 empirical studies comprising 200 exper

Controlled Oxidation and Halide Coordination for Fractal Gold Nanoparticles with Applications in Photoacoustic Imaging.

Hierarchical nanoparticle assemblies formed through diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA) exhibit broad plasmonic coupling, amplified electromagnetic hotspots, and enhanced optical properties. We recently demonstrated that peptide-induced oxidative coalescence drives DLA in bis(p-sulfonatophenyl) phenylphosphine (BSPP)-stabilized silver nanoparticles, where silver's low reduction potential (Ag+/Ag0 = +0.80 V) permits the surface dissolution and redeposition that fuse particles into fractal architectures. Extending this approach to gold has remained elusive: gold's nearly 2-fold higher reduction

The impact of face-to-face social exclusion on university students' interpersonal cooperation behavior: a hyperscanning study based on fNIRS.

BACKGROUND: Most studies on social exclusion adopt virtual paradigms focusing on unilateral responses, while neglecting real-world face-to-face interaction and its neural basis. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) hyperscanning allows recording of interpersonal neural synchronization (INS) during dyadic interaction, providing a novel approach for investigating interpersonal cooperation. METHODS: This study recruited 24 dyads of college students randomly assigned to social exclusion and inclusion groups. Using fNIRS hyperscanning combined with a face-to-face rejection paradigm and th

A vision-based deep learning framework enables high-accuracy prediction of Geng rice eating quality and facilitates QTL mapping.

Geng rice (Oryza sativa subsp. japonica) from northeast China dominates the country's high-value rice market because of its superior eating quality. However, current methods for quality evaluation rely on either labor-intensive, subjective sensory protocols or low-accuracy, calibration-heavy near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), thus hindering breeding efforts for high eating quality and market development. Here, we report a vision-based deep learning framework that combines multi-population fine-tuning with industrial vision-language model (VLM) pre-training to predict the eating quality of Geng

A Comprehensive Review of Wooden Breast Myopathy in Broilers: Impacts, Detection, Processing, and Future Perspectives.

Wooden breast (WB) myopathy is a major muscle disorder in fast-growing broilers, affecting the entire poultry production chain and causing substantial economic losses. Current mitigation strategies rely primarily on carcass-level identification, grading, and processing treatments. However, existing studies remain fragmented and insufficiently integrated, limiting effective problem-solving. In this review, we summarize and compare reported WB identification and classification methods in terms of detection principles, industrial adaptability, accuracy, cost, scalability, technological maturity,

PRBS Gas Challenges Reveal Impaired Chemoreflex and Cholinergic Dynamics in MCI.

PURPOSE: This study investigates the dynamic regulation of cerebral oxygenation in individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) compared to healthy controls, using a novel pseudorandom binary sequence (PRBS) gas challenge. Traditional assessments often overlook frequency-dependent features of cerebrovascular control; this work aims to uncover latent deficits through broadband perturbations and nonparametric dynamic modeling. METHODS: Seventeen ApoE4-negative participants (9 controls, 8 MCI) underwent a three-session supine protocol involving PRBS-modulated inhalation of hypoxic and hyperc

Liver Regional Oxygen Saturation in Preterm Infants with Patent Ductus Arteriosus Status.

Background/Objectives: Near-infrared spectroscopy measures regional oxygen saturation (RSO2) in target tissues. Cerebral and renal RSO2 are associated with hemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in preterm infants. The aim of this study was to determine whether liver RSO2 is associated with PDA status. Methods: Preterm infants born before 32 weeks of gestation and/or weighing <1.5 kg were enrolled. Cerebral, renal, and liver RSO2 values were recorded on day 2 (D2; 48-72 h), day 7 (D7; 7 ± 2 days), and day 14 (D14; 14 ± 3 days), along with the corresponding point-of-care ech

PEG Surface Design Modulates Repeated-Dose Pharmacokinetics of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes.

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are promising nanomaterials for cancer imaging and drug delivery owing to their near-infrared optical properties and tumor accumulation via the enhanced permeability and retention effect. Polyethylene glycol-modified phospholipids (PL-PEG) are widely used to disperse SWCNTs for in vivo applications; however, whether this formulation represents the optimal PEGylation strategy, particularly under repeated administration, remains unclear. Here, we perform a systematic head-to-head comparison between conventional 5 kDa PL-PEG/SWCNTs and SWCNTs encapsulated w

Association of postoperative haemodynamic parameters with progression of left atrioventricular regurgitation in infants: leveraging high-fidelity data: a hypothesis-generating study.

BACKGROUND: The success of an atrioventricular septal defect repair depends largely on the function of the left atrioventricular valve. Given the exposure of this valve to systemic pressures, postoperative haemodynamic management has been of interest, though practices are variable. METHODS: A single-centre, retrospective study of infants less than 1 year of age admitted to the paediatric cardiac ICU following atrioventricular septal defect repair between January 2022 and May 2025 was conducted. Utilising high-fidelity physiologic data, the primary aim of this study was to characterise haemody

Effects of Pneumoperitoneum Pressure on Optic Nerve Sheath Diameter, Cerebral Oxygenation, and Postoperative Recovery During Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Carbon dioxide (CO₂) pneumoperitoneum during laparoscopic surgery may increase intracranial pressure by impairing cerebral venous drainage and inducing cerebral vasodilation. Patients with severe obesity may be particularly vulnerable due to obesity-related cardiopulmonary and hemodynamic alterations. This randomized controlled trial investigated the effects of standard- versus high-pressure pneumoperitoneum on optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD), regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO₂), and postoperative recovery in patients undergoing laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). Ultra-Wideband Radar-Based Sensing Poultry Litter Moisture Content Monitoring System.

High litter moisture content (LMC) in poultry houses is a primary driver of footpad dermatitis, elevated ammonia emissions, and bacterial proliferation. These conditions directly compromise broiler welfare and productivity. Existing monitoring methods, including oven-drying, contact-based sensors, and near-infrared spectroscopy, suffer from invasiveness, single-point limitation, or surface-only measurement. This study investigates ultra-wideband (UWB) impulse radar as a non-contact sensing modality for estimating the LMC of cedar wood shaving bedding under controlled laboratory conditions. A f

Neural Correlates of Balance in People With Parkinson's Disease, Older, and Younger Adults: An fNIRS Study.

BACKGROUND: Postural instability is one of the most debilitating symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD). Moreover, older adults (OA) often show issues with postural control leading to increased fall-risk. However, the current understanding of the neural underpinnings of standing postural control remains limited. This study aims to investigate cortical control of postural control in OA, younger adults (YA), and people with PD (PwPD), using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). METHODS: A total of four 2-minute standing conditions were performed. Postural control and cortical activity we

Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation for disorders of consciousness: a narrative review of neurophysiological mechanisms, clinical evidence, and future directions.

Disorders of consciousness (DoC) following severe brain injury remain difficult to treat, and effective non-invasive therapeutic options are still limited. Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) has recently emerged as a promising neuromodulation approach in this field. In this narrative review, we synthesize recent evidence on taVNS for DoC across four domains: neurophysiological mechanisms, multimodal monitoring evidence, clinical efficacy, and stimulation parameter optimization with safety considerations. Current mechanistic models suggest that taVNS may influence consciou

The Longitudinal Physiological Reference Values of Middle Cerebral Artery Blood Flow Velocity in Extremely Preterm Infants: A Study Utilizing Multimodal Cerebral Hemodynamic Monitors.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral blood flow (CBF) is essential for maintaining cerebral metabolism in extremely preterm infants; however, no universally accepted reference standard exists for CBF velocity (CBFV). This study aimed to establish physiological reference patterns of middle cerebral artery CBFV under strictly defined physiological stability using multimodal monitoring. METHODS: This post-hoc analysis included extremely preterm infants (gestational age ≤ 28+6 weeks or birthweight 500-1000 g) from a prospective cohort study. Serial Doppler ultrasonography of the middle cerebral artery was perfor

Fulminant Postpartum Weil's Syndrome Presenting with Refractory Seizures and Multiorgan Failure: A Case Report and Critical Care Management.

Leptospirosis is a globally prevalent zoonotic infection with protean manifestations, while severe disease (Weil's syndrome) is uncommon and rarely reported in the postpartum period, where it can closely mimic obstetric emergencies. We report a rare case of severe postpartum leptospirosis complicated by sudden-onset seizures and multiorgan failure. A 32-year-old woman developed generalized tonic-clonic seizures two hours after vaginal delivery, followed by septic shock, hyperpyrexia, refractory seizures, acute liver failure, acute kidney injury, coagulopathy, and stress-induced cardiomyopathy.

Impact of sensory organization tasks on prefrontal cortex activity in older women: a comparative fNIRS study of osteoarthritis and healthy aging.

INTRODUCTION: Osteoarthritis (OA), a prevalent musculoskeletal condition, is associated with an increased risk of falls. Maintaining posture relies on visual, vestibular, and proprioceptive inputs, but these systems can be compromised due to aging or disease, heightening fall risk. Such impairments may result from neuromuscular decline and reduced cognitive or visuospatial processing abilities. This study aimed to investigate prefrontal cortical (PFC) activation patterns during clinical sensory organization tasks (SOT) using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) in older women with OA
