OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to evaluate our departmental policy of plaster immobilization and selective Kirschner (K) wiring for the management of displaced distal radius fractures in children.
METHODS: On a retrospective basis, we evaluated a consecutive series of 112 childhood displaced distal radius fractures (108 patients; 77 boys, 31 girls; mean age 10.5+/-2.6 years; range 5 to 16 years) presenting with clinical deformity during a two-year period. There were 97 incompletely displaced (86.6%), and 15 completely displaced (13.4%) fractures. All the fractures were managed with manip

UNLABELLED: The purpose of this study was to assess changes in epidemiology and reasons for wintertime excess of distal radius fractures in Oulu, Finland. Our results showed that age-specific incidence of distal radius fractures in elderly women in Finland has increased compared with a previous study. Slippery pavement surfaces assessed by a new meteorological model partly explained wintertime excess of fractures, but factors beyond weather are contributing to seasonality.
INTRODUCTION: In this report, we describe the epidemiology and seasonal variation of distal radius fractures in Oulu, Fin

The aim of this study was to determine whether the socioeconomic status (SES) of parents influences early childhood unintentional injury deaths for different injury mechanisms and the gender and age at death of the child. Study design is a population-based retrospective study. Death certificate data from 1995 to 2004 were linked to birth certificate data from 1995 to 1996 for each child who died when aged < or = 8 years. Parental age, birth order, marital status, residence area, educational level, and occupation were used as indices for SES. Cox proportional-hazards analysis was employed. Our

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: Each year in Ireland, 11 000 patients are admitted to hospital with a traumatic brain injury (TBI) but there are no data on subsequent disability in such patients. The objective of this study was to assess the management and outcome in patients of working age admitted with TBI to the unit.
METHODS: Two hundred and sixteen patients admitted with TBI aged 16-65 were identified. Self-reported incidence of disability and access to appropriate services was assessed using the Glasgow outcome scale and a problem-orientated questionnaire.
RESULTS: Eighty-five per cent of patients

Fractures of the olecranon account for 7% of fractures in adult patients. Of all elbow fractures, 38% are isolated fractures of the olecranon. Falling on the 90 degrees flexed elbow is the most common cause of isolated olecranon fractures. Reconstitution of the joint surface is the main treatment goal, as well as stability of the joint and full range of motion and muscular strength. This can only be achieved in most cases by open reduction and precision osteosynthesis. Tension band wiring and plate osteosynthesis are the most commonly used techniques. Operative therapy is the therapy of choice

The objectives of this study were to (i) characterize epidemiologic trends in anterior permanent tooth trauma in a sample of children and adolescents (ii) examine the relationship of crown fractures (CF) and concomitant root fractures (RF) to determine if CFs are protective against RFs and (iii) examine the radiographic evidence of RFs to determine the value of obtaining three vertical periapical radiographic projections. This was an 8-year cross-sectional study of patients aged 6-18 with anterior permanent tooth trauma. We examined cases involving maxillary central/lateral incisors for which

Although supracondylar fracture is a very common elbow injury in childhood, there is no consensus on the timing of surgery, approach for open reduction and positioning of fixation wires. We report our ten-year experience between 1993 and 2003 in 291 children. Most fractures (285; 98%) were extension injuries, mainly Gartland types II (73; 25%) and III (163; 56%). Six (2%) were open fractures and a neurovascular deficit was seen in 12 (4%) patients. Of the 236 children (81%) who required an operation, 181 (77%) were taken to theatre on the day of admission. Most (177; 75%) of the operations wer

Anorectal injuries (ARI) are uncommon in children in civil practice. In developed countries the injuries are mainly due to sexual abuse and firearms. This report reviews the experience in tropical Africa. A retrospective study of children aged 12 years or less managed for ARI over 10 years was undertaken. There were seven children, four girls and three boys. Four injuries were due to blunt trauma and three to penetrating trauma. Six patients presented within 6 h of injury and one after 24 h. Five had rectal bleeding, which was associated with vaginal bleeding in one girl. One girl each had vag

Falls in urban setting are a common cause for emergency room visits in children and adolescents. In a retrospective review, the charts of 48 patients admitted between 1980 and 1985 with a history of a vertical fall from a height were examined. In comparison, a previous review from the same institution disclosed that 66 patients were admitted because of a vertical fall from a height between 1965 and 1974, suggesting an increase of 37.5%. Most children fell from heights of 12 ft or less, although an increasing proportion of children in our series (33%) fell from heights of 36 ft or less. Sites i

BACKGROUND: Falls are the most common cause of injury-related hospitalization in children younger than 5 years old. Most anticipatory guidance surrounding falls is around falls from windows or stairs; however, falls from furniture also are important causes of morbidity. The purpose of this study was to compare the number of children injured, ages of injured children, and injuries sustained in falls from furniture and falls from stairs in hospitalized children younger than 5 years.
METHODS: All records of individuals from 0 year through 4 years, hospitalized at our institution for a fall from

We present a retrospective case series of 15 children (aged 8-16 years) with blunt traumatic spinal cord injury who were treated with methylprednisolone as per the National Acute Spinal Cord Injury Study protocol. Of all patients, 12 (80%) were male. Causes were sports injuries (n = 9), motor vehicle crashes (n = 2), and falls (n = 4). Most injuries were nonskeletal (n = 14), and all patients had incomplete injury of the spinal cord. The most common location of tenderness was cervical (n = 7). Of the 15 patients, methylprednisolone was initiated within 3 hours in 13 patients and between 3 and

The authors describe the case of a 13-year-old boy who exhibited progressive disabling motor restlessness, torticollis, urinary symptoms, and confusion following a fall from a bicycle. The differential diagnosis of this striking symptom complex in this clinical context can be problematic. In this case, the symptoms ultimately appeared most consistent with severe akathisia resulting from a single administration of haloperidol used at an outside hospital to sedate the patient prior to a head CT scan. The literature on akathisia in pediatric patients, and especially in patients following acute he
