Specific and non-specific B cell activation in measles and varicella.

Lymphocytes from eight patients with measles and six patients with varicella were studied during the acute phase (first week) of illness and after recovery for spontaneous and pokeweed mitogen (PWM)-induced production of immunoglobulins (Ig) and viral antibodies by an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). In both infections acute phase lymphocytes showed increased spontaneous in vitro IgM and IgG productions including IgM and IgG antibodies to the aetiological virus as well as IgG antibodies to unrelated viruses (varicella, measles, rubella and mumps) to which the patient had serum antibo

Seroprevalence of varicella antibodies in unvaccinated children with nephrotic syndrome in disease remission.

Background and objectives Varicella-zoster (VZV) virus infection can be severe in children with nephrotic syndrome. Lack of varicella vaccination through the national immunisation programme in India leaves many vulnerable to infection. We conducted this study to document the seroprevalence of Varicella antibodies in patients with nephrotic syndrome. Methods This cross-sectional study (Oct 2024-May 2025) was conducted at a tertiary-care teaching hospital in India, in children (1-18 y) with nephrotic syndrome (both steroid-sensitive and steroid-resistant) in disease remission. Serum VZV IgG anti

Measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella seroprevalence in health care workers: A cross-sectional study from Tan Tock Seng Hospital and the National Centre for Infectious Diseases, Singapore.

OBJECTIVES: We assessed measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) and varicella seroprevalence and factors associated with seropositivity among our institutions' health care workers (HCWs). METHODS: This cross-sectional enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) seroprevalence study of HCWs' residual sera from 2020 assessed factors associated with seropositivity using logistic regression and tested performance characteristics of an "immunity" criterion (composite of past vaccination and serology results) against seropositivity. Measles non-seropositive sera were re-tested with plaque neutralization reduct

Immunogenicity and safety of an investigational quadrivalent measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella vaccine in children aged 4-6 years: A phase II, randomized, multi-country trial.

Two-dose childhood vaccination against measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella is widely recommended. Quadrivalent (MMRV) vaccines can be used for one or both immunizations against these diseases. In some countries, e.g. the United States, only one MMRV vaccine is licensed. Availability of another MMRV vaccine could strengthen supply resilience, optimal vaccine coverage, and disease control. In this phase II, single-blind, multi-country study, healthy children aged 4-6 y, previously primed with a first dose of any combination of measles/mumps/rubella/varicella-containing vaccine(s) in their sec

Variable Clinical Courses of Varicella Zoster Virus Infection-related or Vaccination-related Bone Marrow Failure.

We report 5 children with bone marrow failure (BMF) after primary varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection or VZV vaccination, highlighting the highly variable course. Two patients were treated with intravenous immunoglobulins; one had a slow hematologic recovery, and the other was rescued by allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Of the 2 patients treated with immunosuppressive therapy with antithymocyte globulin and cyclosporine, one had a complete response, and the other was transplanted for nonresponse. One patient underwent a primary allograft. All patients are alive. Th

Fatal hemorrhagic varicella in a patient with abdominal pain: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Varicella is normally a self-limited childhood disease caused by varicella-zoster virus infection. However, it sometimes causes severe diseases, especially in immunocompromised individuals. We report a case of severe varicella in a young woman. CASE PRESENTATION: A 19-year-old woman presented to the emergency department with abdominal pain and a rash after taking methylprednisolone for 2 weeks for systemic lupus erythematosis. The laboratory data showed leukocytosis, thrombocytopenia, an elevated level of the liver transaminases and disseminated intravascular coagulation. Computed

Vaccination With Live Attenuated Vaccines in Four Children With Chronic Myeloid Leukemia While on Imatinib Treatment.

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) in childhood and adolescence is a rare malignancy that can successfully be treated with the tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) imatinib. According to the current experience, treatment is necessary for years and, in the majority of cases, a lifelong approach is required to control the malignant disease. To what extent imatinib causes immunosuppression in different age cohorts is a controversial discussion. According to general medical recommendations, live vaccines are contraindicated in individuals treated with imatinib. However, a recent increase in the number of g

Seroprevalence of varicella-zoster virus in the prevaccine era: a population-based study in Izmir, Turkey.

PURPOSE: To determine the population-based seroprevalence of varicella zoster virus (VZV) and related risk factors in Izmir. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A population-based household survey was conducted. A representative sample of the population older than 15 years of age was selected using multistage random sampling. A total of 2136 healthy persons participated in this cross-sectional study. The participants completed a questionnaire designed to collect data related to socio-demographic characteristics and risk factors. Blood samples were collected, and VZV-specific IgG was measured using an ELIS

[Immunisation schedule of the Spanish Association of Paediatrics: 2013 recommendations].

The Advisory Committee on Vaccines of the Spanish Association of Paediatrics (CAV-AEP) updates the immunisation schedule every year, taking into account epidemiological data as well as evidence on the safety, effectiveness and efficiency of vaccines. The present schedule includes levels of recommendation. We have graded as routine vaccinations those that the CAV-AEP consider all children should receive; as recommended those that fit the profile for universal childhood immunisation and would ideally be given to all children, but that can be prioritised according to the resources available for t

Rapid and efficient introduction of a foreign gene into bacterial artificial chromosome-cloned varicella vaccine by Tn7-mediated site-specific transposition.

Using a rapid and reliable system based on Tn7-mediated site-specific transposition, we have successfully constructed a recombinant Oka varicella vaccine (vOka) expressing the mumps virus (MuV) fusion protein (F). The backbone of the vector was our previously reported vOka-BAC (bacterial artificial chromosome) genome. We inserted the transposon Tn7 attachment sequence, LacZalpha-mini-attTn7, into the region between ORF12 and ORF13 to generate a vOka-BAC-Tn genome. The MuV-F expressing cassette was transposed into the vOka-BAC genome at the mini-attTn7 transposition site. MuV-F protein was expr

Safety and immunogenicity of a measles, mumps, rubella and varicella vaccine given with combined Haemophilus influenzae type b conjugate/hepatitis B vaccines and combined diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis vaccines.

BACKGROUND: A study was conducted to assess administration of a combination measles, mumps, rubella and varicella vaccine (MMRV) with other childhood vaccines. METHODS: In this open, multicenter trial, 1915 healthy children ages 12-15 months were randomized into 3 groups: group 1, MMRV, combined Haemophilus influenzae type b conjugate-hepatitis B vaccines (Hib/HepB) and combined diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis vaccines (DTaP) concomitantly; group 2, MMRV followed by Hib/HepB and DTaP 42 days later; group 3, MMR and varicella vaccine followed by Hib/HepB and DTaP 42 days later.
