Twenty-five years of type I interferon-based treatment: a critical analysis of its therapeutic use.

The clinical exploitation of type I interferon (IFN) as an antiviral and antineoplastic agent is based on the properties originally attributed to this cytokine family, with schedules reflecting only their antiviral and antiproliferative activities. Nevertheless, type I IFN has emerged as a central activator of the innate immunity. As current schedules of treatment for chronic hepatitis C and for hematological and solid tumors, based on the continuous administration of recombinant type I IFN or pegylated formulations, disregard viral resistance, host genetic variants predicting treatment outcom

Prevalence of high-risk human papillomavirus infection and cervical lesions among female migrant head porters (kayayei) in Accra, Ghana: a pilot cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Little attention has been given to the risk of high-risk human papillomavirus (hr-HPV) infection and cervical precancerous lesions among female migrant head porters (kayayei) in Ghana, as a vulnerable group, and to promote cervical screening in these women. This pilot study aimed to determine the prevalence of hr-HPV infection and cervical lesions among kayayei in Accra, the capital of the Greater Accra Region of Ghana and to describe our approach to triaging and treating these women. METHODS: This descriptive cross-sectional cohort study involved the screening of 63 kayayei aged

Human papillomavirus-associated cancers, precancers, and genital warts in Denmark, 2000-2022 - Current burden of disease and population impact of multi-cohort HPV vaccination.

OBJECTIVES: We present incidence trends of cancer and precancer at human papillomavirus(HPV)-associated sites, and genital warts, including the current burden of HPV-associated disease in Denmark, a country with multi-cohort HPV vaccination. METHOD: Cases were identified from high-quality nationwide registries (2000-2022). The age-specific incidence rate, age-standardized incidence rate (ASR) and estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) were calculated according to sex and calendar year. The current burden (2020-2022) of HPV-associated disease was estimated as the average annual number of ea

Burden of HPV related anogenital diseases in young women in Germany - an analysis of German statutory health insurance claims data from 2012 to 2017.

BACKGROUND: Most individuals are infected with human papillomavirus (HPV) at least once in their lifetime. Infections with low-risk types can cause genital warts, whereas high-risk types can cause malignant tumors. The aim of this study was to determine the burden of anogenital diseases potentially related to HPV in young women based on German statutory health insurance claims data. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective claims data analysis using the "Institute for Applied Health Research Berlin" (InGef) Research Database, containing claims data from approximately 4 million individuals. In th

Factors Associated with Development of High-Grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesions of the Uterine Cervix in Women Younger than 30 Years.

Objective: To determine the factors associated with the increased risk of developing high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL) of the uterine cervix in women younger than 30 years compared with those aged ≥ 30 years who also had HSIL. Methods: Patients with HSIL who underwent loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) between January 2006 and July 2017 at Chiang Mai University Hospital were retrospectively reviewed. We analyzed the factors associated with the development of HSIL by comparing two age groups between women aged < 30 years and those aged ≥ 30 years. The factors analyz

Condyloma Acuminatum of Urinary Bladder: Relation to Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

Condyloma acuminatum rarely occurs in the urinary bladder and is considered to be a risk factor for squamous cell carcinoma, although there are only a few publications with limited cases. We studied 51 cases of condyloma acuminatum of the urinary bladder from transurethral resections of the urinary bladder of 38 patients from the consult files of one of the authors. Transurethral resections of the urinary bladder were obtained from 25 males with a median age of 73 years (range: 41 to 87 y) and 13 females with a median age of 68 years (range: 30 to 86 y). The follow-up period ranged from 15 mon

UK healthcare professionals' uncertainties, barriers and facilitators to the introduction of targeted human papillomavirus vaccination for men who have sex with men.

BACKGROUND: Female-only human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination will fail to protect men who have sex with men (MSM) against HPV and its sequelae (i.e. genital warts and anal cancers). In the absence of gender-neutral HPV vaccination, targeted vaccination at sexual health clinics for MSM offers a valuable preventive opportunity. This study aimed to identify sexual healthcare professionals' (HCPs) perceived barriers and facilitators for MSM-targeted HPV vaccination. METHODS: Nineteen telephone interviews with UK-based self-referred HCPs (13 doctors, three nurses, three health advisers) were con

The early impact of human papillomavirus vaccination on anogenital warts in Québec, Canada.

In Québec province in Canada, a public school-based and catch-up HPV vaccination programs with the quadrivalent vaccine have been introduced in September 2008 for girls aged 9-17 years. We assessed the early impact of the HPV vaccination program on the incidence of anogenital warts (AGW) in the Quebec general population. We used the provincial health administrative data of the Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ). AGW were identified either through a prescription of podofilox, or a medical procedure code specific to AGW, or a diagnostic code for viral warts followed by a prescription

Human papillomavirus vaccine trials and tribulations: Clinical perspectives.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) affects hundreds of millions of people worldwide and is associated with both benign and malignant neoplasms in men and women. It is a double-stranded DNA virus with an icosahedral capsid. Forty HPV types are known to infect mucosal keratinocytes. If not cured by the immune system, the infection can lead to genital warts, mucosal dysplasia, or cancer. The most common oncogenic types are 16 and 18. The vaccine to prevent HPV and its associated morbidity and mortality has existed since 2006. Several variations protect against an increasing number of HPV types. The recom

Implication of HLA-G 3' untranslated region polymorphisms in human papillomavirus infection.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is involved in cervical lesion development. It interferes with host immune response and modifies the expression of human leukocyte antigen-G (HLA-G), a nonclassical HLA-I antigen with immune-inhibitory functions. We analyzed the frequencies of two HLA-G 3' untranslated region polymorphisms (14 bp ins/del, +3142C>G), involved in HLA-G modulation, in 33 condyloma acuminatum, 14 low grade squamous intraepithelial lesion and 100 invasive cervical cancer (ICC) HPV infected patients. We showed the involvement of HLA-G polymorphisms in HPV infection and lesion dev

Evaluating the epidemiology and morbidity burden associated with human papillomavirus in Israel: accounting for CIN1 and genital warts in addition to CIN2/3 and cervical cancer.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is mostly associated with cervical cancer (CC). However, it can cause other illnesses as well, all of which impact on people's wellbeing and consume healthcare resources. Measures for prevention or early detection of these conditions differ in their effectiveness and cost. An informative evaluation of the projected benefit of these measures depends on understanding the current unmet need, not only limited to CC. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the burden of HPV-related conditions in Israel, including CC, cervical precancerous lesions and genital warts.

[Knowledge of human papilloma virus-associated disease among women in general practice].

INTRODUCTION: Cervical cancer is caused by oncogenic human papilloma virus (HPV) serotypes. Types 16 and 18 are responsible for approximately 75% of all cases in Europe. Low-malignant serotypes like HPV 6 and 11 are the cause of approximately 90% of all cases of conyloma accuminata. Approximately 75% of the adult population has or will become infected by one or more HPV serotypes. The purpose of the study was to investigate the level of knowledge of the cause of cervical cancer, cervical dysplasia and condylomas among women seen in Danish general practice, and to investigate the women's expect
