A Unique Case of Frontotemporal Dermoid Cyst Presenting as Orbital Cellulitis.

Dermoid cysts are benign developmental anomalies that can occur anywhere along the neuroaxis or embryonic lines of fusion. While intracranial dermoid cysts at the midline frequently have an associated nasal or subcutaneous sinus tract, it is quite rare to encounter an intracranial dermoid cyst off the midline with a lateral sinus tract. Standard practice for the treatment of dermoid cysts is surgical resection to minimize the risks of meningitis, abscess, mass effect, neurologic deficit, and/or death.  A 3-year-old male with a history of DiGeorge syndrome presented with right orbital celluliti

Morphological and functional relationship between the orbital gland and olfaction in Upupa epops (hoopoe) and Bubulcus ibis (cattle egret).

This study used both anatomical and histological techniques to investigate the orbital gland's topographic relationship with the surrounding system, using the hoopoe and cattle egret as biological models. Hoopoe has a spindle-shaped lacrimal gland that is suspended on the lateral edge of the frontal bone, whereas cattle egret has a tiny lacrimal gland that is embedded posteriorly within the periorbital fascia. The hoopoe's lacrimal gland has a single duct that runs parallel to the nasolacrimal duct and opens into the posterior nostril hole. In the cattle egret, the tubule-alveolar secretory co…

Hip passive stiffness is associated with midfoot passive stiffness.

BACKGROUND: Hip motion in the transverse plane is coupled with foot motion in the frontal plane during closed kinematic activities, such as gait. Considering that movement patterns and bone alignment might influence passive mechanical properties of joints in the long term, it is possible that hip passive stiffness and foot complex stiffness and alignment are related to each other. OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether hip passive stiffness, midfoot passive stiffness and shank-forefoot alignment are related to each other. METHOD: Thirty healthy adult individuals with a mean age of 25.4 years par

Supraorbital Keyhole Approach for Resection of Prechiasmatic Craniopharyngioma: 2-Dimensional Operative Video.

Craniopharyngioma are benign extra-axial tumors occurring classically in the vicinity of the sella. Because of the complex anatomy surrounding the sella turcica comprising, among others, the vessels of the circle of Willis, the optic nerves, chiasma and optic pathway, the hypothalamus, the third ventricle, and the pituitary gland, a large variety of technical approaches have been described. We illustrate, in this video, a unilateral supraorbital keyhole approach to access and entirely extirpate a prechiasmatic craniopharyngioma.  A 40-yr-old healthy male presented to the emergency department w

Closure of Skull Base Defects after Endonasal Endoscopic Resection of Planum Sphenoidale and Tuberculum Sellae Meningiomas.

BACKGROUND: The expanded endoscopic endonasal transplanum transtuberculum approach allows tumor removal by minimally invasive procedures. A large dural and bone defect is created during the surgical procedure, increasing the risk of postoperative cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to describe a surgical technique and complications observed in patients undergoing endonasal resection of planum sphenoidale and/or tuberculum sellae meningiomas. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed of patients with planum sphenoidale and/or tuberculum sellae meningio

The Pattern of Orbital Fractures Managed at Two Referral Centers in Nairobi, Kenya.

Orbital fractures are one of the commonest injuries in mid-face trauma and can lead to significant functional and cosmetic defects. This study was aimed at analyzing the pattern of orbital fractures at 2 referral centers in Nairobi. It was a descriptive prospective hospital-based study of the demographics, etiology, clinico-radiological features, and management modalities among patients presenting with orbital fractures at the University of Nairobi Dental Hospital and Kenyatta National Referral Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya. A total of 60 patients (52 males, 8 females; P <0.05) with confirmed orb

Novel Splicing Mutation in B3GAT3 Associated with Short Stature, GH Deficiency, Hypoglycaemia, Developmental Delay, and Multiple Congenital Anomalies.

B3GAT3, encoding β-1,3-glucuronyltransferase 3, has an important role in proteoglycan biosynthesis. Homozygous B3GAT3 mutations have been associated with short stature, skeletal deformities, and congenital heart defects. We describe for the first time a novel heterozygous splice site mutation in B3GAT3 contributing to severe short stature, growth hormone (GH) deficiency, recurrent ketotic hypoglycaemia, facial dysmorphism, and congenital heart defects. A female infant, born at 34 weeks' gestation to nonconsanguineous Caucasian parents with a birth weight of 1.9 kg, was noted to have cloacal ab

Giant intracranial arteriovenous malformation as the focus of epileptic seizures.

A man in his late thirties was found in a supine position in the hallway of his house. He had been diagnosed with epilepsy at approximately 20 years old. Since stopping treatment, epileptic events occurred more frequently and his condition deteriorated in the past 2 years. Autopsy revealed that head injuries were found on the left side of his head. A fracture from the left parietal bone to the anterior cranial fossa was also detected. A subdural hemorrhage (hematoma) spanned a wide range. A subarachnoid hemorrhage was also identified in the left parietal region. His brain weighed 1603 g, was e

Long-term follow-up of one-piece fronto-orbital advancement with distraction but without a bandeau for coronal craniosynostosis: Review of 26 consecutive cases.

To adopt the traditional fronto-orbital advancement technique designed by Tessier in the application of a distraction technique, the frontal bone flap should be detached before the distraction. In order to maximize the merit and potency of the distraction, we have applied the "one-piece cranioplasty" technique without bandeau for coronal craniosynostosis. Our new surgical technique was used to treat 10 unilateral and 16 bilateral craniosynosis patients between February 2005 and August 2014. Satisfactory results were achieved in all patients. An average distraction of 25.2 mm was possible witho…

An Effective Method of Frontal Sinus Reconstruction After Bifrontal Craniotomy: Experience with 103 Patients.

BACKGROUND: Bifrontal craniotomy is effective for the treatment of anterior skull base lesions. However, the frontal sinus (FS) is often opened during this surgery, and various postoperative complications may occur as a result of the open FS, including cerebrospinal fluid leakage and infection. We describe our procedure for maintaining the patency of the nasofrontal duct and direct suture of the exposed and violated FS mucosa. METHODS: Bifrontal craniotomy with reconstruction of the FS was performed in 103 patients (68 women and 35 men; age range, 32-90 years; mean age, 62.6 years) for lesion

Craniomandibular trauma and tooth loss in northern dogs and wolves: implications for the archaeological study of dog husbandry and domestication.

Archaeological dog remains from many areas clearly show that these animals suffered tooth fractures, tooth loss, trauma, and dental defects … more commonly experienced cranial fractures than wolves, particularly depression fractures on their frontal bones, which were likely the result of blows from humans. Hypoplastic lesions are rare in both wolves and dogs, and probably result from multiple causes, including food stress, disease, and trauma.

Bilateral temporal arteritis with multiorgan eosinophilic infiltration treated with IL-5 targeted antibody.

Temporal arteritis with marked eosinophilic infiltration is uncommon and can present as either a localized arteritis or a manifestation of systemic eosinophilic disease. We report a 48-year-old woman who presented with fatigue, intermittent fever, and bilateral painful cord-like swelling in the frontal region. Laboratory tests showed marked eosinophilia and elevated total IgE with mild inflammation, while anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies were negative. Biopsies of both superficial temporal arteries demonstrated transmural eosinophilic infiltration with disruption of the internal elastic

Sinonasal oncocytic Schneiderian papilloma limited to the inferior turbinate: a rare case.

Sinonasal oncocytic papilloma is a rare benign epithelial tumor arising from the Schneiderian mucosa, accounting for 3%-5% of all sinonasal papillomas. We present a case of a 67-year-old man with a history of non-Hodgkin lymphoma who presented with a one-year history of frontal and parietal headache, nasal obstruction, and discharge. Endoscopic examination revealed a polypoid lesion arising from the right inferior turbinate-an exceptionally uncommon site. Computed tomography demonstrated a well-circumscribed mass confined to the inferior turbinate without bone erosion, while a positron emissio
