Knowledge, attitudes and perceptions (KAP) of onchocerciasis: a survey among residents in an endemic area in Guatemala targeted for mass chemotherapy with ivermectin.

If ivermectin distribution programs are to have maximum impact on the morbidity and transmission of human onchocerciasis there must be broad and sustained acceptance within the endemic communities. Educational activities, developed with careful consideration of community attitudes, should promote positive treatment seeking behavior while simultaneously addressing local reservations about the control effort. To better understand the ambient knowledge, attitudes, and practices concerning onchocerciasis in the context of ivermectin use in Guatemala, we conducted a survey among 145 heads of househ

Respiratory exposure of grain inspection workers to carbon tetrachloride fumigant.

Carbon tetrachloride (often mixed with carbon disulfide or ethylene dichloride) is a common constituent of liquid grain fumigants. Applied as liquids, these mixtures volatilize and achieve vapor concentrations sufficient to control insect infestations in stored grains. Absorbed grain desorbs fumigant components after the fumigation period, and it then becomes a source of exposure to workers who handle fumigated grain. Carbon tetrachloride meets the EPA's risk criteria for hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity and oncogenicity, and it has been under regulatory review since 15 October 1980. Present OSH

Cellular lesions in the central nervous system of Periplaneta americana following insecticide treatment in vitro and in vivo. II. Glial cells.

Glial cell damage in the central nervous system of P. americana following insecticide treatment has been studied. Treatment of isolated metathoracic ganglia with 10 microM dieldrin caused an increase in the electron opacity of the inner and outer glial cells without effecting such a change in the structure of glial cells in the ventral connectives. Glial cells in the ganglia and ventral connectives treated with 5 microM bioresmethrin were found to be swollen and even more electron lucent than the control cells. In the prostrate cockroaches (24 hr after the treatment) the action of bioresmethri

Beauveria caledonica as an Antagonist Controlling Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense Tropical Race 4 in Bananas.

Beauveria caledonica offers great potential as a biocontrol agent for certain pests and diseases. However, its ability to colonize plants as an endophyte and its interactions with pathogenic microorganisms within the plant are still not fully understood. In this study, we investigated the potential of B. caledonica isolated from banana weevils to colonize banana cultivar "Baxijiao" (Musa spp. AAA) and control the Tropical Race 4 (TR4) strain of Fusarium Wilt of Banana (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc). A four-point dual-culture confrontation test revealed that B. caledonica effectively

Efficacy of biological control agents against Popillia japonica: A strategy to reduce the risk of pest spread via potted plant substrates.

The international trade of potted plants represents a pathway for the unintentional spread of harmful organisms, leading to new infestations in pest-free areas. The Japanese beetle Popillia japonica, which is considered one of the most threatening insect pests in Europe, can evade detection at the larval stage by hiding within the substrates of potted plants. To reduce the risk of P. japonica dispersal via potted plants, we tested the efficacy of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) and fungi (EPF) as biological control agents (BCAs). Field trials with potted cherry trees were conducted in an Ita

Molecular detection of African horse sickness virus from selected areas in Ethiopia.

Equines are vital to global economies and support millions of livelihoods. However, their productivity and welfare are severely hindered by infectious diseases such as African Horse Sickness, which causes major socio-economic losses in Ethiopia. A cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2022 to May 2023 to isolate and detect African horse sickness virus in equines across epidemic areas of Ethiopia. In total, 30 blood samples and 2 tissue representative specimens were aseptically collected from clinically sick and recently dead animals and transported under cold chain to the National

Can isoproteic diets with different amino acid profiles modulate the amino acid composition of the black soldier fly?

The nutritional composition of black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens; BSF) larvae is highly dependent on feed substrates, yet the independent effects of substrate protein levels and amino acid composition remain poorly understood due to the use of complex mixed feeds. This study employed a simplified isoproteic model using three purified peptones (meat, soybean, and casein) at two protein levels (124 g/kg and 46 g/kg DM) to investigate larval metabolic responses. The results reveal that BSF larvae employ a dual regulatory mechanism in response to varying nutrient inputs. The total amino acid (T

Element partitioning of minerals and trace metals in value-added product from insect-mediated valorisation of seafood waste.

Seafood processing generates substantial volumes of shell byproducts that are often underutilized or landfilled, resulting in massive economic and environmental costs. In many coastal regions, limited waste management infrastructure forces processors to rely heavily on landfill disposal, increasing transportation burdens and greenhouse gas emissions. However, processing byproducts such as shell residues is a mineral-rich resource, representing an underexploited opportunity for nutrient recovery and circular reuse. In this study, we evaluated the minerals and trace metal partitioning during the

Harnessing halophyte phytochemicals and biostimulants to enhance crop resilience under climate stress: a comprehensive review.

Global food security is increasingly compromised by the synergistic pressures of soil salinization and the climate-mediated proliferation of resilient agricultural pests and weeds. Halophytes, extremophile plants naturally adapted to high-salinity niches, represent an underexploited reservoir of bioactive compounds and microbial consortia with significant bioeconomic potential. This review synthesizes the multi-functional utility of halophyte-derived bioactive compounds in mitigating contemporary environmental stressors through two primary lenses. First, we discuss the biochemical efficacy of

Evaluating BG-Sentinel trap setting as an effective surveillance tool for mosquito vectors in the Republic of Cyprus.

Effective surveillance of invasive Aedes mosquitoes, particularly Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus, is essential for early detection, risk assessment, and optimization of control strategies such as the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT). Although BG-Sentinel 2 traps are widely used in Europe, their performance under eastern Mediterranean conditions remains insufficiently evaluated. We assessed the attractiveness of BG-Sentinel 2 traps baited with BG-Lure, dry ice (CO2), their combination, and unbaited controls using a Latin square field design in Larnaca and Nicosia, Cyprus. A total of 1,649 mosquit

The Volatilomes of Penicillium crustosum G10 and Penicillium solitum SA.

Penicillium crustosum and Penicillium solitum are common molds known for their ability to thrive at cool temperatures and low water activities. They are frequently associated with the contamination of cheeses, pome fruits, and meats. While many strains of these species are recognized for producing bioactive metabolites, their volatile metabolism remains poorly understood. In this study, a comprehensive gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was employed to identify and analyze the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by P. crustosum strain G10 and P. solitum SA. When cultivated on l

RNA interference of Argonaute-1 disrupts ovarian development and enhances insecticide susceptibility in Tribolium castaneum.

BACKGROUND: With the development of rapid resistance, new modes of action for pesticides are needed for insect control, such as RNA interference (RNAi)-based biopesticides targeting essential genes. To explore the function of Argonaute-1 (Ago-1) and potential microRNAs (miRNAs) in ovarian development and their impact on rapid resistance in important storage pest Tribolium castaneum, we knocked down Ago-1 and observed the development of ovarian and insecticide susceptibility. RESULTS: Our results indicated that Ago-1 had a relatively high transcriptional level of adult female T. castaneum duri…

Seven Steps in Seven Days to Managing Allergy in the Tropics.

Allergic conditions, including asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis, are increasingly recognized as critical global health concerns in tropical regions. The unique environmental characteristics of the tropics, such as high humidity, diverse vegetation, persistent pollen exposure, and elevated levels of mold and insect allergens, increase the prevalence and severity of allergic diseases. Addressing these challenges requires tailored strategies that are both practical and evidence-based. This review introduces a comprehensive seven-day and seven-step framework for managing allergies

Immunomodulatory effects of Triatoma dimidiata feces on Trypanosoma cruzi infection in a murine model.

Trypanosoma cruzi infection involves transmission of metacyclic trypomastigotes through injured skin or mucosa via contaminated feces from insect vectors like Triatoma dimidiata (Latreille, 1811). Currently, there is insufficient information describing the immune response to feces naturally contaminated with metacyclic trypomastigotes. Mice subcutaneously inoculated with tissue-culture derived trypomastigotes (TCT) or T. dimidiata feces containing metacyclic trypomastigotes (MT) or previously multi-exposed (ME) with feces without metacyclic trypomastigotes and then infected with feces containi

Delayed mating in the malaria vector Anopheles funestus compared to Anopheles arabiensis (Diptera: Culicidae).

Mating is a vital behavior for mosquito reproduction, yet it remains poorly understood under captive conditions. We examined the copulation dynamics of 2 key malaria vectors, Anopheles funestus sensu stricto Giles and Anopheles arabiensis Patton, under laboratory settings in Tanzania. We conducted observations in 24-h cycles and monitored copulation events and insemination of females, initially using flashlights for nighttime visibility, followed by red lights in subsequent experiments. We observed how variations in mosquito age and artificial lighting influenced mating success for these 2 mos

Purification and characterization of recombinant neuraminidase as a potentially broadly protective influenza virus vaccine candidate.

Influenza viruses pose a significant public health threat, causing seasonal epidemics and occasional pandemics with substantial morbidity and mortality worldwide. The development of effective vaccines remains crucial for mitigating the impact of influenza virus infections. The influenza virus possesses two glycoproteins on its surface: hemagglutinin, which is immunodominant, and neuraminidase, which is immunosubdominant. Traditional influenza vaccines primarily target the viral surface glycoprotein hemagglutinin to induce protective immunity. However, the high mutation rate of this protein, pa

Increase in insecticide susceptibility after sublethal exposure to deltamethrin in the German cockroach (Blattodea: Ectobiidae).

The German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.), is a major urban insect pest primarily controlled by insecticides, including pyrethroid sprays, fipronil baits, and indoxacarb baits. However, widespread pyrethroid resistance increases the probability that cockroaches will survive treatments in the field. Many insecticides are applied concurrently or repetitively on a periodic basis, meaning survivors have the chance to be re-treated, but any lasting physiological effects from initial survival may impact the performance of subsequent treatments. We investigated the effects of sublethal deltameth

Digestion of fruit wastes by black soldier fly (Diptera: Stratiomyidae) larvae alters moisture content and emission of greenhouse gases, noxious gases, and odors.

Black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens (L.) (Diptera: Stratiomyidae), larvae convert organic wastes into insect biomass that can be used as livestock feed. Recent evidence also suggests larvae can reduce emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) and noxious odors. However, these benefits are substrate and scale dependent. The current study examined the impact of black soldier fly larval digestion on resulting moisture level, greenhouse gas (i.e., carbon dioxide), noxious gases (i.e., ammonia, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen sulfide), and volatile organic compound production for coconut, honeydew, orange

A Clinical Prediction Model to Assist Screening Patients for Scabies in Primary Care.

AIM: To develop and test a clinical prediction model based on demography and symptoms to assist in screening for scabies diagnosis in primary care. METHODS: Data from a scabies prevalence survey conducted in Auckland, New Zealand (NZ) were analysed using logistic regression to predict diagnosis, defined by either clinical criteria (International Alliance for the Control of Scabies, IACS) or quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) for scabies derived from a skin swab. Best subsets regression was used to select predictors in the final models, using Akaike's information criterion. Model pe

Citizen science to complement the surveillance of Triatominae (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) with data of Trypanosoma cruzi (Kinetoplastea: Trypanosomatidae) infection and spatial distribution models in northeast Mexico.

The primary transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi, causative agent of Chagas disease, to humans and animals is through the feces and urine of Triatominae. Therefore, knowledge of their ecology and distribution is crucial for establishing effective surveillance programs with citizen participation. This is coupled with geographic distribution models to predict the risk of transmission in the areas most affected by Chagas disease. Therefore, this study aims to: a) document and validate citizen participation on the iNaturalist in the collection and observation of triatomines, as well as exploring risk
