[Intestinal haemorrhage in infants and children (author's transl)].

From 1968 to 1977 at the Paediatric Surgical Dept. of the Surgical Clinic of Jena/GDR 160 children with gastro-intestinal haemorrhage were seen. Half of them were not older than 1 year. The causes of bleeding are various. Haemorrhage due to insufficiency of the cardia and intussusception dominates.

Neonatal appendicitis: a new look at an old zebra.

Acute neonatal appendicitis is a rare condition associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The severity of this disease is caused by its tendency to occur more frequently in premature infants, an increased perforation rate with rapid progression to peritonitis, and delay in diagnosis and intervention. Although appendicitis in the perinatal period may occur as an isolated event, in many cases it occurs in association with other pathologic states, including prematurity, inguinal hernia, and others. The presentation of neonatal appendicitis can be identical to necrotizing enterocolitis,

Double-contrast examination. Part II: Small intestine.

There is no place in modern radiological practice for the traditional 'barium meal and follow-through'. Selection of patients should be made and a separate and specific small bowel examination should be performed for known or suspected small bowel lesions. The choice between an oral or an intubation method will be influenced by many factors and both, if performed with due care and attention to detail, can produce good diagnostic results.

The uterine blush. A potential false-positive in Meckel's scan interpretation.

To determine the presence, prevalence, and clinical importance of Tc-99 pertechnetate uterine uptake, this retrospective analysis of 71 Meckel's scans was undertaken. Specifically, each study was evaluated for the presence of a focal accumulation of radiotracer cephalad to the bladder. Patients received an intravenous dose of 150 microCi/kg of Tc-99 pertechnetate. Each study consisted of 15 one minute anterior serial gamma camera images, and a 15, 30, and 60 minute anterior, right lateral and posterior scintiscan. Menstrual histories were obtained from all patients except two. No males (33/33)

Development of a Comorbidity Index to Identify Patients With Small Bowel Bleeding at Risk for Rebleeding and Small Bowel Vascular Diseases.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: We aimed to establish a comorbidity index for small bowel vascular diseases (SBVD) associated with small bowel bleeding (SBB) and recurrent bleeding. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of 404 patients diagnosed with SBB via double-balloon enteroscopy, at 2 hospitals in Japan from June 2003 through July 2016. We collected data on comorbidities, computed Charlson Comorbidity Index and anticoagulation and risk factors in atrial fibrillation (ATRIA) scores, and analyzed associations with SBVD, rebleeding, and overall survival associated with bleeding and/or comorbid
