Category selectivity as a window into behavioral relevance.

Ritchie et al. (this issue) argue that a deeper understanding of occipitotemporal cortex (OTC) requires shifting emphasis from category selectivity to behavioral relevance. They suggest that focusing on categories such as faces, bodies, or scenes is too narrow and overlooks how OTC supports flexible, goal-directed behavior. We agree that linking neural representations to behavior is essential but caution against treating category selectivity and behavioral relevance as opposing views. Category selectivity provides valuable insight into how cortical representations are organized to support beha

Deep Learning Protocols for Predicting Drug Mechanism of Action and Drug-Target Interactions.

Understanding drug mechanisms of action (MOA) and predicting drug-target interactions (DTIs) are fundamental challenges in modern drug discovery and development, hindered by high costs, long development timelines, and limited knowledge of compound activity and molecular targets. Here, we present two deep learning-based computational protocols designed to address these challenges. The first framework employs directed message passing neural networks (D-MPNN) to predict drug MOA from chemical-genetic interaction profiles (CGIPs), by learning how molecular structures perturb biological pathways th

A bias field correction workflow based on generative adversarial network for abdominal cancers treated with 0.35T MR-LINAC.

PURPOSE: In this study, a bias field correction workflow was proposed to improve the flexibility and generalizability of the generative adversarial network (GAN) model for abdominal cancer patients treated with a 0.35T magnetic resonance imaging linear accelerator (MR-LINAC) system. METHODS: Model training was performed using brain MR images acquired on a 3T diagnostic scanner, while model testing was performed using abdominal MR images obtained using a 0.35T MR-LINAC system. The performance of the proposed workflow was first compared with the GAN model using root-mean-square error (RMSE), pe

Estimating the spectral tilt of the glottal source from telephone speech using a deep neural network.

Estimation of the spectral tilt of the glottal source has several applications in speech analysis and modification. However, direct estimation of the tilt from telephone speech is challenging due to vocal tract resonances and distortion caused by speech compression. In this study, a deep neural network is used for the tilt estimation from telephone speech by training the network with tilt estimates computed by glottal inverse filtering. An objective evaluation shows that the proposed technique gives more accurate estimates for the spectral tilt than previously used techniques that estimate the

Numerical modeling of 2D sutterby fluid stagnation-point flow over a stretching surface using levenberg-marquardt backpropagation.

Two-dimensional (2D) prediction of Sutterby fluid flow is important in polymer synthesis, industrial coatings, aviation and thermal regulation, and this work utilizes the Levenberg-Marquardt backpropagation (LMBP) method. The calculation of Sutterby nanofluid stagnation point problem over a stretching surface is solved by applying an artificial neural network (ANN) based on LMBP. In this case, the mathematical equations for the non-Newtonian Sutterby dynamic system are dimensionless velocity and energy equations. The key novelty in this investigation is the use of a very powerful soft-computin

BigOrthoATD.Net: A scalable and adaptable distributed deep learning framework for multi-class orthopedic classification across imaging modalities in low-resourced settings.

Multi-class medical image classification using DL continues to face major challenges, including managing multi-modal data, adapting to new tasks, handling distributed datasets, and operating under limited computational resources. Existing approaches fail to address these issues simultaneously, restricting the clinical scalability of AI in healthcare. To overcome these limitations, this paper introduces BigOrthoATD.Net, a unified, serverless, and decentralized learning framework that redefines scalability, adaptability, and efficiency in orthopedic image analysis. Designed to operate across dis

Hard exudates segmentation for retinal fundus images based on longitudinal multi-scale fusion network.

Accurate segmentation of hard exudate in fundus images is crucial for early diagnosis of retinal diseases. However, hard exudate segmentation is still a challenge task for accurately detecting small lesions and precisely locating the boundaries of ambiguous lesions. In this paper, the longitudinal multi-scale fusion network (LMSF-Net) is proposed for accurate hard exudate segmentation in fundus images. In this network, an adjacent complementary correction module (ACCM) is proposed on the encoding path for complementary fusion between adjacent encoding features, and a progressive iterative fusi

Automated segmentation of hyperreflective foci in OCT images for diabetic retinopathy using deep convolutional networks.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is being investigated in diabetic retinopathy (DR) diagnostics as a real-time evaluation tool. Currently, OCT images are the main methods for the diagnosis of patients with DR. Hyperreflective foci (HRF) are potential biomarkers for the diagnosis and prediction of the progression and prognosis of patients with DR. The development of artificial intelligence (AI) models for segmenting HRF is of great significance for the clinical diagnosis and treatment of patients with DR. The purpose of this study is to construct a deep-learning algorithm that automatically s

Importance of localized dilatation and distensibility in identifying determinants of thoracic aortic aneurysm with neural operators.

Thoracic aortic aneurysms (TAAs) stem from diverse mechanical and mechanobiological disruptions to the aortic wall that can also increase the risk of dissection or rupture. There is increasing evidence that dysfunctions along the aortic mechanotransduction axis, including reduced integrity of elastic fibers and loss of cell-matrix connections, are particularly capable of causing thoracic aortopathy. Because different insults can produce distinct mechanical vulnerabilities, there is a pressing need to identify interacting factors that drive progression. In this work, we employ a finite element

SVNC-Net: An optimized U-Net variant with 2D convolutions for lightweight 3D spleen segmentation.

Accurate measurement of spleen volume is essential for the diagnosis of splenomegaly. While Computed Tomography (CT) is among the most reliable imaging modalities for this task, manual segmentation of the spleen is labor-intensive and impractical for routine clinical workflows. Automatic segmentation methods provide a more viable alternative for clinical deployment. In recent years, 3D Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models have been widely used for this purpose due to their high segmentation accuracy. However, their computational and memory demands make them less suitable for real-time app

Generalizable deep neural networks for image quality classification of cervical images.

Successful translation of artificial intelligence (AI) models into clinical practice, across clinical domains, is frequently hindered by the lack of image quality control. Diagnostic models are often trained on images with no denotation of image quality in the training data; this, in turn, can lead to misclassifications by these models when implemented in the clinical setting. In the case of cervical images, quality classification is a crucial task to ensure accurate detection of precancerous lesions or cancer; this is true for both gynecologic-oncologists' (manual) and diagnostic AI models' (

iEMG-Based Diagnosis of ALS and Myopathy using 1D-CNN.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and myopathy are debilitating neuromuscular disorders that require accurate and timely diagnosis for effective management. Traditional electromyography (EMG)-based diagnostic methods rely on manual interpretation, which is time-consuming and prone to variability. This study proposes an approach that directly classifies EMG signals using a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) without feature extraction, addressing the limitations of existing methods that depend on handcrafted features and focus primarily on binary classification. The proposed

Real-time Detection of Aortic Valve in Echocardiography using Convolutional Neural Networks.

BACKGROUND: Valvular heart disease is a serious disease leading to mortality and increasing medical care cost. The aortic valve is the most common valve affected by this disease. Doctors rely on echocardiogram for diagnosing and evaluating valvular heart disease. However, the images from echocardiogram are poor in comparison to Computerized Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging scan. This study proposes the development of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) that can function optimally during a live echocardiographic examination for detection of the aortic valve. An automated detection syst

Chronic gastritis classification using gastric X-ray images with a semi-supervised learning method based on tri-training.

High-quality annotations for medical images are always costly and scarce. Many applications of deep learning in the field of medical image analysis face the problem of insufficient annotated data. In this paper, we present a semi-supervised learning method for chronic gastritis classification using gastric X-ray images. The proposed semi-supervised learning method based on tri-training can leverage unannotated data to boost the performance that is achieved with a small amount of annotated data. We utilize a novel learning method named Between-Class learning (BC learning) that can considerably

Application of chaos in a recurrent neural network to control in ill-posed problems: a novel autonomous robot arm.

Inspired by a viewpoint that complex/chaotic dynamics would play an important role in biological systems including the brain, chaotic dynamics introduced in a recurrent neural network was applied to robot control in ill-posed situations. By computer experiments we show that a model robot arm without an advanced visual processing function can catch a target object and bring it to a set position under ill-posed situations (e.g., in the presence of unknown obstacles). The key idea in these works is adaptive switching of a system parameter (connectivity) between a chaos regime and attractor regime

Telepathology and imaging spectroscopy as a new modality in histopathology.

Telemedicine started in the late 1950's by transmitting data on patients' pulse and heart rates. In the 1980's it expanded to radiology and orthopedics. The technology is now expanding to other specialties that can digitally gather patient data. Telepathology comprises the transmission of microscopic images via telecommunication network. Image compression and multiplexing technologies enabled high-resolution telepathology as well as real-time video consultations over international telephone lines. Organ transplantation has become a viable treatment and offers new life to an increasing number o
