Associative agnosia and optic aphasia: qualitative or quantitative difference?

We report a patient who, following the partial removal of a tentorial meningioma, suffered a hematoma in the left occipital lobe, which was resected. He showed severe anomia for visually presented stimuli, while naming was normal when they were presented in the tactile, auditory and verbal modality. His performance on visuo-perceptual tests, not requiring meaning identification, provided evidence that he was able to access the stored representations of stimuli. When recognition was assessed with non-verbal tasks, a mixed pattern of findings emerged and the patient showed features of both assoc

Two-stage high-frequency ultrasonic characterization of ex vivo renal tumor microstructure.

OBJECTIVE: Pre-operative classification of renal tumor subtypes remains challenging. Renal mass biopsies are a solution, but are invasive and currently underutilized in clinical practice. This study evaluated the feasibility of a two-stage, high-frequency ultrasonic characterization of ex vivo renal tumor subtypes to non-invasively assess the tissue microstructure and subsequently classify the tumor histologic subtype. METHODS: Ex vivo renal tumors resected by partial or radical nephrectomy were scanned immediately after surgery using a high-frequency 29 MHz ExactVu (Exact Imaging, ON, Canada

Neurocognitive profile of the adult population living with type 1 diabetes mellitus: a matched case-control cross-sectional study of metabolism and memory.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic, debilitating condition that causes numerous long-lasting complications. The cognitive health of people with DM is crucial for ensuring holistic development, academic success, and participation in daily life activities. This study aimed to assess the neurocognitive profile and the impact of HbA1c levels and disease duration on the cognitive profile of adults living with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). METHODS: A total of 108 adults (54 T1DM, and 54 controls) were recruited, matched for age, gender, ethnicity, education, and Body Mass Index (BMI

Let not thy left hand know what thy right hand knoweth. The case of a patient with an infarct involving the callosal pathways.

Following a cerebral vascular accident, a patient showed a classical disconnection syndrome: left-hand tactile anomia, apraxia and dysgraphia and right-hand constructional apraxia. What made the case unusual was the presence of hand asymmetry in the performance of some matching-to-sample tasks carried out in foveal vision. The left hand committed significantly more errors than the right hand when it was not possible to identify on a perceptual basis the stimulus that was to be matched, because it was removed (memory condition) or was indicated verbally (verbo-visual matching), or had the same

Impact of Phases of Menstrual Cycle on Patient-Reported Outcomes in Females With Lupus: A Narrative Review.

The objective of this narrative review is to synthesize existing evidence on menstrual-cycle-associated variation in patient-reported outcomes (PROs) in reproductive-aged women with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), integrate comparative findings from disease controls and nondisease controls, identify clinical implications, and indicate directions for future studies. A review of the literature was conducted using PubMed, Medline (Clarivate), JISC Library Hub, PsychINFO, and Web of Science. Inclusion criteria included articles referencing women with SLE, PROs, and menstrual cycle phases. Data

Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy Presenting as Lobar Intracerebral Hemorrhage with Cognitive Decline in an 80-Year-Old Patient: A Clinicoradiologic Case Report.

Background and Clinical Significance: Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is a neurovascular disorder characterized by the deposition of amyloid beta (Aβ) peptides within the walls of small-to-medium-sized cerebral vessels, leading to vascular fragility and an increased risk of lobar intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), cognitive decline, and recurrent stroke. CAA is an important cause of spontaneous ICH in elderly patients and may be underrecognized, particularly when presenting with acute neurologic symptoms that mimic ischemic stroke. Early identification has significant implications for managemen

Etanercept-induced sarcoidosis presenting with bilateral panuveitis: diagnostic value of ocular signs and therapeutic response to IL-17A inhibition-a case-based review.

BACKGROUND: Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) inhibitors are effective treatments for autoimmune diseases but may cause paradoxical adverse events (PAEs), including sarcoid-like granulomatosis. Etanercept, a soluble TNF receptor fusion protein, has been more frequently associated with this phenomenon compared to monoclonal antibodies. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a 61-year-old man with chronic plaque psoriasis on long-term etanercept therapy who developed bilateral visual symptoms. Ophthalmologic evaluation revealed granulomatous panuveitis with retinal vasculitis and macular edema. Imagi

Learning and memory in monozygotic twins discordant for schizophrenia.

Learning and memory were assessed in 24 monozygotic (MZ) pairs of individuals discordant for schizophrenia or delusional disorder and seven normal pairs of MZ twins. On declarative memory tasks, the affected group displayed a pattern that might best be characterized as dysmnesic in that they performed significantly worse than the discordant unaffected group on story recall, paired associated learning, and visual recall of designs, but they learned over time, had relatively preserved recognition memory, and did not show profoundly accelerated rates of forgetting. Effortful, volitional retrieval

Clinical characteristics and pulmonary-cause mortality in rheumatoid arthritis-associated interstitial lung disease by lung-onset status.

OBJECTIVES: Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is a major extra-articular manifestation of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), but the significance of pulmonary manifestations preceding or coinciding with articular disease remains unclear. This study aimed to compare the clinical and prognostic characteristics of RA-associated ILD (RA-ILD) stratified by lung-onset status. METHODS: In this single-center retrospective cohort study, 1,344 hospitalized patients with confirmed RA between 2008 and 2020 were screened and 192 RA-ILD patients with complete pulmonary function, HRCT, and follow-up data were include

Functional neuroimaging abnormalities in youth with psychosis spectrum symptoms.

IMPORTANCE: The continuum view of the psychosis spectrum (PS) implies that, in population-based samples, PS symptoms should be associated with neural abnormalities similar to those found in help-seeking clinical risk individuals and in schizophrenia. To our knowledge, functional neuroimaging has not previously been applied in large population-based PS samples and can help us understand the neural architecture of psychosis more broadly and identify brain phenotypes beyond symptoms that are associated with the extended psychosis phenotype. OBJECTIVE: To examine the categorical and dimensional r

Dissociation of long-term verbal memory and fronto-executive impairment in first-episode psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Verbal memory is frequently and severely affected in schizophrenia and has been implicated as a mediator of poor clinical outcome. Whereas encoding deficits are well demonstrated, it is unclear whether retention is impaired. This distinction is important because accelerated forgetting implies impaired consolidation attributable to medial temporal lobe (MTL) dysfunction whereas impaired encoding and retrieval implicates involvement of prefrontal cortex. METHOD: We assessed a group of healthy volunteers (n=97) and pre-morbid IQ- and sex-matched first-episode psychosis patients (n=97

Transient Vestibular Symptoms Preceding Posterior Circulation Stroke: A Prospective Multicenter Study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The recognition of clinical features of transient vestibular symptoms (TVSs) preceding posterior circulation stroke (PCOS) would be informative to discriminate dizziness/vertigo due to vertebrobasilar transient ischemic attack from the acute transient vestibular syndrome. We sought to determine the prevalence and characteristics of TVSs preceding PCOS. METHODS: We performed a prospective multicenter observational study that had recruited 447 patients with PCOS from referral-based 4 university hospitals in Korea. We investigated the timing, pattern, frequency, duration,

Infantile spasms in tuberous sclerosis complex.

The high incidence of infantile spasms (IS) and hypsarrhythmia in tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) has long been emphasized but it is now clear that infants with TSC show clinical and EEG differences from those with classical West syndrome. Seizures at onset are mainly characterized by partial motor seizures and IS. Subtle partial seizures may be present in the early neonatal period and may precede the onset of IS. Visual recording techniques have led to significant progress in the classification of seizures associated with TSC, demonstrating that they have a focal or multifocal origin in the

Global Mapping and Trends in Scabies Research Over Four Decades: A Bibliometric Analysis Supporting the WHO Elimination Agenda.

BACKGROUND: Scabies is a neglected tropical disease with at least 200 million people affected worldwide at any one time and a disproportionate burden in resource-limited settings. Although World Health Organization (WHO) prioritization has increased attention to scabies control, the evolution, geographic distribution, collaboration patterns, and policy alignment of the global research landscape remain incompletely characterized. This study mapped publication trends, research inequities, and thematic shifts in relation to the WHO control agenda. METHODS: A bibliometric analysis was conducted u

Magnetoencephalographic Signatures of Facial Emotion Processing in Schizophrenia and Major Depressive Disorder: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Social withdrawal is a frequent marker of functional decline in schizophrenia, Alzheimer's disease (AD), and major depressive disorder (MDD), and is associated with deficits in facial-emotion recognition (FER). Magnetoencephalography (MEG) captures neuronal activity at millisecond resolution, enabling the assessment of fast oscillatory dynamics and functional connectivity during FER. This systematic review compares MEG responses during implicit and explicit FER tasks in adults with schizophrenia, AD, and MDD to identify possible transdiagnostic and disorder-specific alterations.

Prone to excitement: adolescent females with Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) show altered cortical pattern to emotional and NSS-related material.

Emotion-regulation difficulties have been identified as one of the core components in Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), a behaviour often beginning in adolescence. This pilot study evaluated differences in emotion processing between 18 female adolescents with and without NSSI by using verbal responses and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Responses to pictures taken from the International Affective Picture System and slides with reference to NSSI were recorded both by verbal rating of valence and arousal and by fMRI. The NSSI group rated pictures with self-injurious reference as sig
