Interplay of childhood metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease and obesity in the development of youth-onset type 2 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: The global increase in childhood and adolescent obesity has significantly contributed to the rising prevalence of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) - a condition now recognized as a key metabolic complication in youth. MASLD significantly increases the risk of youth-onset type 2 diabetes (T2D), particularly among obese individuals. Its asymptomatic progression presents considerable challenges for timely diagnosis and intervention. AIM: To review epidemiology, pathophysiological mechanisms, and management strategies related to pediatric MASLD, explori

Cold pressed oils: a systematic review on physicochemical properties, nutritional composition and pharmacological activities.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, there has been increasing interest in novel plant-based oil sources as sustainable alternatives to conventional edible oils. This shift is driven by consumer demand for natural, nutrient-dense, and health-promoting products. Among these, cold-pressed oils have gained prominence as specialty oils. Cold-press extraction is a mechanical, environmental friendly and energy-efficient technique that eliminates the use of heat and solvents, thereby preserving the natural physicochemical and nutritional properties of oils. This method is applied to seeds, kernels, fruits, a

Conceptualisation and application of implementation strength in public health programmes within health systems: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Implementation strength (IS), a cardinal concept in the field of implementation science, is used to assess how the implementation of health services and specific health programme influences health outcomes. It offers a unique opportunity to determine how much implementation effort is required to achieve a meaningful level of change in outcomes. Despite its growing use, a lack of conceptual clarity has led to inconsistent measurement and sub-optimal application. We explored how IS is defined, measured, and associated with outcomes, and proposed a set of recommendations for its futur

Defining interstitial lung disease related to idiopathic inflammatory myopathies: a systematic review protocol of the Myositis Clinical Trial Consortium (MCTC).

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) are systemic autoimmune diseases that include dermatomyositis, polymyositis, antisynthetase syndrome, and immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy in both adult and juvenile populations. Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is a common and serious complication of IIM, with a highly variable clinical course ranging from indolent disease to rapidly progressive respiratory failure, often influenced by underlying myositis-specific autoantibody profiles. Despite the substantial morbidity and mortality associated with IIM-ILD in both adults and children, h

Effect of different cochlear implantation timings on long-term language development outcomes of pediatric unilateral cochlear implant cases.

INTRODUCTION: Cochlear implantation provides an opportunity for children with congenital severe to profound hearing loss to acquire spoken language. However, as multiple factors influence language outcomes after cochlear implantation, language development performance can vary between individuals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study participants (n = 150) were divided into three groups according to age at cochlear implantation: Group 1, 12-24 months; Group 2, 25-36 months; and Group 3, 37-48 months. The effect of age at implantation on auditory perception and language development performance was

Gait speed-dependent modulation of paretic versus non-paretic propulsion in persons with chronic stroke.

BACKGROUND: Persons with chronic stroke (PwCS) exhibit impaired paretic propulsion generation. Consequently, PwCS walk slower than healthy peers and rely more on their non-paretic leg, leading to propulsion asymmetry. However, it remains unclear how propulsion symmetry is influenced by walking at various gait speeds. This study aimed to investigate the relation between gait speed and propulsion symmetry in PwCS and controls. METHODS: Fifteen PwCS and sixteen healthy controls walked on an instrumented treadmill at randomized speeds, ranging from 0.2 m/s to comfortable walking speeds for PwCS o

Exploring potential opportunities and strategies of using the Labour Care Guide to improve labour monitoring and health outcomes among health care providers in Uganda: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Labour monitoring tracks cervical dilation, contractions, and foetal heart rate to ensure safe childbirth. Prolonged labour is identified when progress exceeds expected timelines, shown on the partograph or Labour Care Guide (LCG). The LCG helps health care providers detect abnormal labour patterns early. This study explored how the LCG could enhance labour monitoring in Uganda, identifying strategies to improve maternal and foetal outcomes through timely assessments and interventions. METHODS: Between June and September 2023, qualitative interviews were held with Health Care Prov

Exploring Postoperative Outcomes of Primary Repair Versus Loop Ileostomy in Typhoid Ileal Perforation: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Typhoid ileal perforation, a severe complication of typhoid fever, often leads to peritonitis and high mortality, particularly in low-income countries. While conservative management was once standard, surgical interventions like primary repair and loop ileostomy have been preferred since the 1970s, though outcomes vary due to late presentations and resource constraints. This systematic review and meta-analysis, adhering to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, evaluates postoperative morbidity, mortality, and hospital stay for these techniques.
