Prevalence, patterns, and determinants of gender-based violence among women and girls in IDP camps, Mogadishu-Somalia.

BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence (GBV) against women and girls, is a global pandemic that affects 1 in 3 women in their lifetime. Somalia is one of the leading countries in human rights violations and has one of the highest rates of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) worldwide. Such violence is more prevalent among women and girls in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps who lack livelihood and civil protections. Therefore, this study was designed to identify the prevalence and the determinants of gender-based violence in IDP camps in Deynile district, Somalia. METHODS: This is a cro

Decarceration of older adults with mental illness in the USA - beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.

PURPOSE: Aging and mental illness both represent significant public health challenges for incarcerated people in the USA. The COVID-19 pandemic has further highlighted the vulnerabilities of incarcerated people because of the risks of infectious disease transmission in correctional facilities. Focusing on older adults with mental illness, this paper aims to examine efforts to decarcerate US correctional facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic and whether these approaches may lead to sustainable reforms beyond the pandemic. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: A narrative literature review was conduct

Syncope and the Risk of Subsequent Motor Vehicle Crash: A Population-Based Retrospective Cohort Study.

IMPORTANCE: Medical driving restrictions are burdensome, yet syncope recurrence while driving can cause a motor vehicle crash (MVC). Few empirical data inform current driving restrictions after syncope. OBJECTIVE: To examine MVC risk among patients visiting the emergency department (ED) after first-episode syncope. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A population-based, retrospective observational cohort study of MVC risk after first-episode syncope was performed in British Columbia, Canada. Patients visiting any of 6 urban EDs for syncope and collapse were age- and sex-matched to 4 control p

Houston Cocktail: Driving under influence of hydrocodone, alprazolam, and carisoprodol.

Concurrent use of opioids, benzodiazepines, and skeletal muscle relaxants potentiates the drug effect and respiratory depression via interactions of μ-opioid and GABAA receptors. In the early 2000s when abuse of prescription drugs began to spike, a potent combination including hydrocodone, alprazolam, and carisoprodol, aka the "Houston Cocktail" or "Holy Trinity", emerged that may give users heroin-like euphoria. This research evaluated driving while intoxicated (DWI) cases that tested positive for hydrocodone, alprazolam, and carisoprodol, between 2015 and 2019. The blood samples were collect

Long-term trends in child maltreatment in England and Wales, 1858-2016: an observational, time-series analysis.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether child maltreatment is increasing or decreasing in England and Wales. More evidence is needed, from multiple sources and over longer periods of time, to explore trends in child maltreatment. We investigated whether the annual incidence of child maltreatment has changed over time, using official record data and time-series methods to establish long-term trends. METHODS: In this observational time-series analysis, we used six data sources (Government records for child mortality, police-recorded child homicides, crimes against children, child protection, and chil

The combined benefits of motorcycle antilock braking systems (ABS) in preventing crashes and reducing crash severity.

OBJECTIVE: Several studies have reported the benefits of motorcycle antilock braking systems (ABS) in reducing injury crashes, due to improved stability and braking performance. Both aspects may prevent crashes but may also reduce the crash severity when a collision occurs. However, it is still unknown to what extent the reductions in injury crashes with ABS may be due to a combination of these mechanisms. METHODS: Swedish hospital and police reports (2003-2012) were used. The risk for permanent medical impairment (RPMI) was calculated, showing the risk of at least 1 or 10% permanent medical

Post-traumatic stress disorder: outline and updated insights focusing on occupational factors.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a stress-related disorder associated with substantial psychological distress and functional impairment, and it carries major relevance for occupational health because it frequently follows traumatic exposure in both high-risk professions and occupations not traditionally classified as high risk. This narrative review focuses on occupational risk factors, prevalence, work capacity, and implications for workers' compensation and return to work. METHODS: A non-systematic (narrative) literature search was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE and Google S

At-fault drivers in fatal crashes: A comparative study of alcohol and polysubstance use.

OBJECTIVES: This comprehensive register-based study examines fatal at-fault crashes of motor vehicle drivers with alcohol and other substance findings. We categorized substances with possible impact on driving into three categories: alcohol, medicines without addiction potential, and other substances, including illegal substances and medications with addiction potential. We analyzed the differences in crash circumstances and risk factors using odds ratios (ORs), comparing at-fault drivers with different substance combinations to those who were non-impaired. METHODS: Our material comprises cra

Inertia or unanticipated bottlenecks? Exploring stakeholder perspectives on the implementation determinants of the national alcohol policy five years post-enactment in Zambia.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use accounts for a huge proportion of the global burden of disease, and many countries grapple with its severe negative social and health consequences. In 2018, Zambia adopted a national alcohol policy with the aim to reduce the prevalence and impact of harmful alcohol use. However, five years post-adoption, the policy implementation has been slow. This study sought to explore the implementation determinants of the national alcohol policy five years post-enactment in Zambia. Implementation determinants, a concept from Bullocks theoretical framework, refer to the enabling an

Correlating Various Clinical Outcomes and Associated Dispositions in Patients with Severe Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).

Background: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of death and disability worldwide. Patient disposition following TBI has been shown to interact with factors such as age, sex, and injury severity to impact clinical outcomes. Discharge home is associated with better functional outcomes and lower mortality, while discharge to rehabilitation or long-term care facilities is linked to greater injury severity, older age, and higher comorbidity burden. The aim of this study was to further correlate clinical outcomes with discharge dispositions in patients with severe TBI. Methods: This is a

Role of Follow-up Radiographs After Pin Removal in Distal Humeral Fractures in Children: An Ambi-Directional Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Distal humeral fractures are the most common pediatric elbow fractures. Although frequent, displaced fractures are still challenging in treatment and may lead to unfavorable elbow deformities as long-term complications. Post-surgical evaluation always includes plain radiographs for evaluating alignment and bone union. However, there is currently no evidence supporting the role of follow-up radiographs at different time periods after pin removal. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare the Baumann angle and lateral humeral-capitellar angle (LHCA) at pin-removal day, short-time peri

Disproportionate Cybersexual Victimization of Women from Adolescence into Midlife in Spain: Implications for Targeted Protection and Prevention.

Cybersexual victimization is a growing public health concern with severe psychosocial consequences, particularly for younger populations. Despite growing awareness of its prevalence, understanding how cybersexual victimization evolves across different demographic and regional contexts remains limited. The aim was to analyze sex- and age-specific temporal trends and projections of cybersexual victimization in Spain (2011-2022), disaggregated by sex, age group, autonomous community, and offense type, to identify where disparities emerge and persist (particularly from adolescence (<18) into midli
