The effect of a repeat bout of exercise on muscle injury in persons with spinal cord injury.

Following an initial bout of damaging exercise, a successive bout of similar exercise typically results in less injury, known as the "protective effect". Unloading due to spinal cord injury (SCI) increases the susceptibility to contraction-induced muscle injury. We tested the hypothesis that two bouts of isometric actions would evoke the same damage in the quadriceps femoris (QF) of patients with SCI. Six male subjects [32 (5) years old, 182 (9) cm, 81 (21) kg, injury level C6-T7, 6 (2) years post-injury, mean (SD)] were tested at two time points (Time1, Time2), separated by 8 weeks. Magnetic

Intermittent isometric activity: its effect on muscle fatigue in postpolio subjects.

Symptomatic postpolio patients report improved function when they pace their activities, but this has never been objectively assessed. The purpose of this study was to determine whether seven symptomatic postpolio subjects would (1) have less evidence of local muscle fatigue and recover strength more readily when they pace their activity (via work-rest intervals) than when they work at a constant rate to exhaustion, and (2) be able to perform more work with less fatigue by pacing. Subjects were evaluated on three separate days with at least one week between tests. On the first test day (consta

Protein supplementation improves lean body mass in physically active older adults: a randomized placebo-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: An inadequate protein intake may offset the muscle protein synthetic response after physical activity, reducing the possible benefits of an active lifestyle for muscle mass. We examined the effects of 12 weeks of daily protein supplementation on lean body mass, muscle strength, and physical performance in physically active older adults with a low habitual protein intake (<1.0 g/kg/day). METHODS: A randomized double-blinded controlled trial was performed among 116 physically active older adults [age 69 (interquartile range: 67-73) years, 82% male] who were training for a 4 day walk

Comparison of knee loading in subjects 12 weeks post-anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction versus repair when performing a double-limb squat.

BACKGROUND: Despite postoperative complications, anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction remains the gold standard treatment after a tear. Recent advancements in anterior cruciate ligament repair techniques have led to improved outcomes and renewed interest in repair as a less invasive alternative. The purpose of this study was to compare knee biomechanics and quadriceps strength during double-leg squat at 12 weeks between individuals who underwent anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction or repair. METHODS: A total of 43 participants (21 repair, 23 reconstruction) were included. A 10-came

Relating cortical morphology, corticospinal excitability, corticomotor representation, and quadriceps strength after anterior cruciate ligament injury.

The current study investigated the relationship between sensorimotor cortical thickness, corticospinal excitability, corticomotor topography, and quadriceps strength after ACL reconstruction (ACLR). Ten women with a history of unilateral ACLR and 10 controls (CON) received single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation during unilateral, submaximal isometric knee extensions. Pulses were delivered to each vastus medialis oblique (VMO) hotspot with concurrent biceps femoris (BF) monitoring. Corticospinal excitability was assessed by delivering 40 pulses at various intensities to each hotspot. Mo

Mortality Prediction by Bedside Rectus Femoris Muscle Ultrasound for Sarcopenia Diagnosis in Liver Cirrhosis.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is common in patients with liver cirrhosis and is an independent predictor of morbidity and mortality. This prospective study assessed the performance of rectus femoris muscle (RFM) ultrasound in patients with liver cirrhosis to identify those at risk for sarcopenia as defined by the combination of low muscle mass and low muscle strength. METHODS: 84 patients with liver cirrhosis hospitalized at a tertiary center (05/22-02/24) were included with 6-month follow-up. Within 24-48 h of admission hand grip strength, chair rise test (CRT), timed up and go (TUG), short physica

Balance and Falls in Acute Exacerbation of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Prospective Study.

Individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have demonstrated balance impairment and a higher fall incidence. However, these have not been investigated in acute exacerbations of the disease (ECOPD). This study evaluates balance in patients during an ECOPD compared to stable COPD and healthy controls, and examines the fall incidence rate after hospitalisation due to ECOPD compared to individuals with stable COPD. Balance performance of 26 hospitalised patients with ECOPD was compared to 26 community-dwelling participants with stable COPD and 25 matched healthy controls. Balanc

Psychological Readiness Is Related to Force Production Asymmetry, but Not Biomechanical Asymmetry After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Reinjury rates and suboptimal outcomes after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR) may be influenced by reduced psychological readiness to return to sport (RTS) and asymmetries in quadriceps strength and jump-landing biomechanics. HYPOTHESES: ACL-Return to Sport after injury (ACL-RSI) scores, quadriceps performance, and jump landing biomechanics would be significantly associated; the ACLR group would show lower ACL-RSI scores, lower quadriceps peak torque (QuadPT) and rate of torque development (RTD), and different peak knee abduction and extension angles/moments

Combined Assessment of Skeletal Muscle Area Using Computed Tomography in Elderly Patients with Aortic Valve Stenosis Undergoing Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement.

The psoas muscle area (PMA) and rectus femoris muscle area (RFMA) have been used to estimate whole-body muscle mass in elderly patients. However, it is unclear whether combining these measurements can improve the predictive ability of traditional risk factors for adverse clinical events in elderly patients with aortic valve stenosis (AVS). We analyzed data from 153 patients with AVS who underwent transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), and measured PMA and RFMA using computed tomography (CT) before the procedure. This study assessed a composite of adverse clinical events including all-c
