Concomitant injuries in 531 patients with maxillofacial fractures.

A ten-year review of five hundred and thirty one patients with facial fractures who sustained six hundred and forty eight associated injuries was presented. The male to female ratio was 2.7:1 and the highest incidence was in the 21-30 years age group. Road traffic accident was the commonest aetiology while the most frequently associated injury was soft tissue lacerations (71.0%). Neurological injuries constituted 9.9% of the total number of concomitant injuries. Other associated injuries seen were orthopaedic injuries 9.5%, ophthalmologic injuries 6.6%, chest injuries 1.9%, abdominal injuries

The usefulness of quantitative ultrasound at the hand phalanges in the detection of the different types of nontraumatic fractures.

The aim of this retrospective study was to determine whether quantitative ultrasound (QUS) at the hand phalanges has the ability to discriminate between individuals without and with different types of nontraumatic fractures. All women (n = 2466) (age range 38-88 years) not affected by metabolic diseases or under treatment with drugs known to interfere with bone metabolism were divided into controls without fractures (n = 1883) and women with nontraumatic previous fractures (n = 583). Fractures were the result of minimal trauma involving a fall from a standing height or less during normal daily

Effect of piston groove structure on the fluid dynamics of needle-free jet injectors.

Compared with conventional needle-based injections, needle-free injections offer several advantages, including ease of operation and elimination of accidental needlestick injury. To investigate the influence of piston structure on the performance of a needle-free injection system, this study combined experiments with fluid-structure interaction numerical simulations to systematically examine the effects of groove length (L), groove height (H), and the spacing (L0) between the two grooves on jet performance and piston stress. The results showed that during the initial stage of needle-free injec

Excess mortality and causes of death of people with epilepsy in rural China: A nationwide cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Epilepsy is associated with increased risk of excess mortality compared to the general population. Identifying causes of death is critical for guiding prevention strategies. Earlier studies in resource-limited settings suggested that accidental deaths were the main causes, but whether the mortality pattern has changed over time remains unclear. This study aimed to update the knowledge on mortality and causes of death of people with epilepsy in rural China. METHODS: In this nationwide cohort study, we analyzed data from the Epilepsy Prevention and Management Project in rural China b

Metallic clip removal 40 years after scleral encircling surgery for retinal detachment: A case report.

PURPOSE: To report our findings in a case in which a metallic clip used for scleral encircling surgery was accidentally detected and surgically removed more than 40 years after its use in the initial retinal detachment surgery. OBSERVATIONS: The patient was a 54-year-old woman who had undergone surgical treatment for a rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in both eyes during childhood. Her preoperative decimal best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 0.5 in the right eye and 0.01 in the left eye. Postoperatively, the BCVA improved to 1.0 in the right eye, but remained at 0.01 in the left eye. Dur

From PICU to home: a longitudinal airway safety framework for children with tracheostomies.

BACKGROUND: As survival improves among children with chronic lung disease, severe neurologic impairment, neuromuscular disorders, congenital airway anomalies, and long-term ventilator dependence, pediatric tracheostomy care has shifted from a procedure-centered issue to a sustained respiratory care challenge. Post-tracheostomy adverse events are still frequently framed as isolated complications rather than as part of a continuous airway-safety and home-transition pathway. PURPOSE: This article synthesizes post-tracheostomy risk across four connected domains: acute airway-threatening events, c

First morphological and molecular characterization of Eustrongylides excisus larvae (L4) (Nematoda: Dioctophymatidae), with description of induced oxidative-inflammatory changes and tissue injury in European perch (Perca fluviatilis) from the Volga River (Astrakhan, Russia).

Eustrongylides spp. are helminths with a multiple-host life cycle that can infect aquatic oligochaetes, various freshwater fish, fish-eating birds, and accidental mammalian hosts, including humans. This work aimed to morphologically and molecularly characterize the larval stages of Eustrongylides spp. isolated from European perch, and to outline the oxidative/nitrosative stress and histoarchitecture changes induced by active larval migration or tissue-encapsulation. Eighty Perca fluviatilis were collected from the Volga River (Astrakhan, Russia). Thirty-seven were tentatively grouped as infect

The impact of blood flow restriction training combined with low-load resistance training on the risk of falls in patients with knee osteoarthritis in China: a single-centre, two-arm, single-blind, parallel randomised controlled trial protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with knee osteoarthritis are at a higher risk of falls compared to healthy individuals, thereby increasing the likelihood of accidental injury. Resistance training is an important strategy for managing knee osteoarthritis. Although some studies suggest that blood flow restriction training combined with low-load resistance training (LL-BFRT) is a beneficial treatment approach, its effect on fall risk and balance function in patients with knee osteoarthritis remains unclear. We aim to conduct a randomised controlled trial to assess the effectiveness of combined training in

Late-life sleep medication use associated with increased falls risk in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study.

OBJECTIVE: Accidental falls are the leading cause of injury for older adults in the United States. Identifying risk factors for falls is a public health priority. Poor sleep is prevalent among aging adults and has been linked to falls risk. We examined late-life sleep medication use and falls risk in a cohort of older adults. METHODS: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study is an ongoing community-based cohort study. ARIC participants taking any barbiturates, benzodiazepines, antidepressants, non-benzodiazepine receptor agonists, or other hypnotics in the past 4 weeks (2011-2013)

Identifying mental health outcomes and evidence-based psychological interventions for supporting pediatric gunshot wound patients: A systematic review and proposed conceptual model.

BACKGROUND: Accidental and assault gunshot wounds (GSWs) are the second leading cause of injury in the United States for youth ages 1- to 17-years-old, resulting in significant negative effects on pediatric patients' mental health functioning. Despite the critical implications of GSWs, there has yet to be a systematic review synthesizing trends in mental health outcomes for pediatric patients; a gap the present review fills. Additionally, this review identifies evidence-based psychological interventions shown to be effective in the treatment of subclinical symptoms of psychological disorders i

What happened matters: Trauma type and cumulative trauma exposure in refugee youth psychopathology.

OBJECTIVE: Trauma exposure-a contributor to psychological risk for refugee youth-is typically assessed using cumulative indices; however, recent findings indicate that trauma type may better predict psychological outcomes. This study investigated the utility of two methods of classifying trauma exposure-cumulative trauma and exposure to specific types of trauma (i.e., trauma subtypes)-in predicting the severity of symptoms related to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and anxiety for refugee youth. METHOD: 96 Syrian and Iraqi youth resettled as refugees in the United States self-reported tr

Gastrointestinal mucosal damages caused by ingestion of corrosive substances: A case study of hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide.

Ingestion of corrosive substances is most common in children, while in adults causes more severe damages. Massive ingestion of corrosive substances results in severe damage to the gastrointestinal tract and oropharynx if not treated properly. Corrosive substances with pH<2 or >12 can result in severe esophageal damage with either colliquative (alkaline) or coagulative (acidic) necrosis and, at the same time various gastrointestinal injuries could lead to late post-corrosive complications. The aim of the case study was to report the gastrointestinal mucosal damages due to hydrochloric acid (HCl

Restoring the perfusion of accidentally transected right gastroepiploic vessels during gastric conduit harvest for esophagectomy using microvascular anastomosis: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Esophagectomy remains the standard treatment for esophageal cancer or esophagogastric junction cancer. The stomach, or the gastric conduit, is currently the most commonly used substitute for reconstruction instead of the jejunum or the colon. Preservation of the right gastric and the right gastroepiploic vessels is a vital step to maintain an adequate perfusion of the gastric conduit. Compromise of these vessels, especially the right gastroepiploic artery, might result in ischemia or necrosis of the conduit. Replacement of the gastric conduit with jejunal or colonic interposition i

Traumatic subcutaneous emphysema of the hand/forearm: A case report.

Subcutaneous emphysema is commonly associated with infection caused by gas-producing organisms. In this case report, we describe a rare instance of traumatic subcutaneous emphysema of the hand and forearm caused by a puncture injury to the first web space of the hand. Our objective is to increase awareness of the potential for seemingly minor trauma to cause entrapment of significant air in subcutaneous tissues, thereby decreasing the likelihood that a clinically benign-appearing patient will be started down an unnecessarily aggressive treatment pathway. A 16-year-old, otherwise healthy white

Endoscopic Nasopharyngectomy Combined With Internal Carotid Artery Pretreatment for Recurrent Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: Salvage endoscopic nasopharyngectomy (ENPG) is a reasonable choice for resectable recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma (rNPC). However, in past decades, complete removal of the tumor was not feasible when the recurrent lesion was adjacent to the internal carotid artery (ICA). The present article introduces innovative strategies to ensure sufficient surgical margins while avoiding accidental injury to the ICA. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. SETTING: Tertiary care center. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed rT2-3 rNPC patients with tumor lesions adjacent to the ICA (<5 mm) who u
