Reducing mental health stigmatisation among healthcare workers and students using a virtual reality protocol: the VIRTUS protocol, a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Schizophrenia is a chronic psychiatric disorder, frequently associated with stigma, including within healthcare settings that significantly impairs quality of life and may exacerbate symptoms. Virtual reality (VR), as an immersive tool, may allow healthy individuals to experience the first-person perspective of a patient experiencing psychotic symptoms. VR exposure may facilitate perspective-taking, foster empathy and help reduce stigma. However, the findings remain incomplete, with considerable variation between protocols and no data on implicit stigma. Here, we present a study …

Peer-mentorship among people with lower limb amputations living in small communities.

INTRODUCTION: Peer-mentorship, when a peer shares a connection to a group provides knowledge, empathy, and validation through the unique perspective of their lived experience of practical and social-emotional knowledge following disease or disability. However, there is a paucity of research on peer-mentorship among individuals with lower limb amputations particularly those who live in small communities. This study aimed to investigate peer-mentorship among individuals with lower limb amputations in small communities during pre-amputation procedures and adjustment to life post-amputation. METH…

Continuous high-frequency deep brain stimulation of the anterior insula modulates autism-like behavior in a valproic acid-induced rat model.

BACKGROUND: Until now, the treatment of patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) remain a difficult problem. The insula is involved in empathy and sensorimotor integration, which are often impaired in individuals with ASD. Deep brain stimulation, modulating neuronal activity in specific brain circuits, has recently been considered as a promising intervention for neuropsychiatric disorders. Valproic acid (VPA) is a potential teratogenic agent, and prenatal exposure can cause autism-like symptoms including repetitive behaviors and defective sociability. Herein, we investigated the effects of…

Trying differently: A relationship-centered approach to representing clients with cognitive challenges.

This article demonstrates the usefulness of an innovative framework called "Relationship-Centered Lawyering" to enhancing real world legal practice. It uses the example of lawyers, particularly criminal defense lawyers, who often deal with clients with cognitive challenges. The article developed out of a series of workshops conducted jointly by the co-authors, an American law professor with a social work background, and a Canadian criminal defense lawyer and family mediator who is an international expert on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and other Neuro-Behavioral Disorders (FA/NB). The paper

Gently caring: supporting the first few critical hours of life for the extremely low birth weight infant.

Caring for the extremely low birth weight infant in the first days of life is complex and challenging, yet rewarding. It is the experienced health care provider who will be best prepared to meet the needs of these fragile infants and their concerned/frightened parents. Understanding how to minimize stress and support body functions will enable us to better care for these infants in the first few days of life. We should strive to partner with parents, even in the resuscitative and stabilization phases of care, particularly when an infant may not survive. Nursing plays an essential role in provi

Callous-unemotional traits and the emotional processing of distress cues in detained boys: testing the moderating role of aggression, exposure to community violence, and histories of abuse.

Callous-unemotional (CU) traits in antisocial youth have been associated with deficits in the processing of emotionally distressing stimuli in a number of past studies. In the current study, we investigated moderators of this association in a sample of 88 ethnically diverse detained boys (mean age = 15.57, SD = 1.28). Overall, emotional processing of distressing stimuli using a dot-probe task was not related to CU traits and there was no moderating effect of ethnicity. However, CU traits were related to deficits in emotional processing in youth high on aggression and youth high on exposure to

Callous-unemotional behaviors in young girls: shared and unique effects relative to conduct problems.

Among girls, little is known about the shared and unique associations that callous-unemotional (CU) behaviors and conduct problems have with aspects of emotional and behavioral dysregulation and with parenting practices. This study examined these associations using a large community-based sample of young girls (N = 990). The findings revealed that hyperactivity-impulsivity and negative emotionality were positively and uniquely associated with conduct problems, but not with CU behaviors, after controlling for co-occurring conduct problems. Conduct problems were also positively associated with b
