Intra-parotid lymph node metastasis in patients with non-cutaneous head and neck cancers: clinical and imaging features for differentiation from simultaneous parotid primary tumor.

BACKGROUND: Although uncommon, intra-parotid lymph node (IPLN) metastasis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of parotid masses in patients with head and neck cancers. PURPOSE: To compare the clinical and imaging features of IPLN metastases from head and neck cancers and simultaneous parotid primary tumors. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective review of 2199 patients with non-parotid head and neck cancers revealed 63 patients who also underwent parotidectomy during curative resection of head and neck cancer. After exclusion of direct extension to the parotid gland from adjace

Periorbital dermatitis in patients receiving docetaxel in combination chemotherapy.

Recognition of new cutaneous side effects of combination chemotherapy can help prevent unnecessary cessation or reduction of cancer therapy. Periorbital rash has not been found with docetaxel alone, but here, we report it as a result of combination chemotherapy. A series of three patients who received docetaxel in combination with other chemotherapies developed clinically near-identical, distinctive periorbital rashes. Rashes resolved by resolving underlying docetaxel-induced epiphora in conjunction with ophthalmological consultation, topical skin-directed care, and in some cases, chemotherapy

Incidental Acinic Cell Carcinoma of the Parotid Gland Discordant on 123I-MIBG, 111In-Octreotide, and 18F-FDG PET/CT in a Patient With Neuroendocrine Tumor of the Cecum.

A 61-year-old woman diagnosed with a metastatic well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumor of the cecum was referred for radioisotope therapy. Although her metastatic neuroendocrine tumor was positive on both (123)I-MIBG and (111)In-octreotide, there was a left parotid mass that was octreotide avid but MIBG negative. Further investigation also showed discordance on (18)F-FDG PET/CT and excision of the mass revealed an incidental acinic cell carcinoma of the parotid gland. Somatostatin analog imaging and PRRT (peptide receptor radionuclide therapy) may have a role in the management of acinic cell

[Radiation therapy for pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid].

Parotid pleomorphic adenoma is the most frequent tumor of salivary glands. The prognosis depends on the recurrences because they could lead to iatrogenic events (facial paralysis). Moreover the risk of malignant transformation increases with the number of local relapses. This article aims at reviewing histological and radiological criteria and the surgical techniques. To improve local control, adjuvant irradiation (in first intention or after recurrence) may be useful but is still controversial for benign tumors in young patients with a risk of radio-induced cancer. We listed studies in which

Radiation therapy for carcinoma of the major salivary glands. Results of conventional irradiation technique.

From January 1967 through November 1991, a total of 135 patients with carcinoma of the major salivary glands (parotid: 95; submandibular: 39; sublingual: 1) were treated at our department. 40 patients had adenocarcinoma, 29 adenoid cystic carcinoma, 24 mucoepidermoid carcinoma and 16 squamous cell carcinoma. 100 patients were irradiated postoperatively and the remaining 35 were treated with radiation alone. Total radiation doses delivered were 50 Gy for the postoperative group and 50 to 66 Gy for the group receiving only radiation using a 60Co single portal with or without wedged paired or sin

UV Signature Mutations Reclassify Salivary High-grade Neuroendocrine Carcinomas as Occult Metastatic Cutaneous Merkel Cell Carcinomas.

Salivary high-grade neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs) are rare, occur predominantly in the parotid gland, and are difficult to differentiate from metastatic cutaneous Merkel cell carcinomas (MCCs), which have overlapping morphologic, immunophenotypic, and molecular profiles. Oncogenic Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV), found in 70% to 80% of MCCs, has also been reported in a few salivary NECs, but this is controversial. A promising biomarker to distinguish the 2 tumor types are UV signature mutations. UV signature mutations indicate a sun damage-induced mechanism of pathogenesis and recently hav

Results of radiotherapy in stage I to II extranodal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the head and neck.

29 patients with previously untreated clinical stage I and II extranodal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the head and neck received involved or extended field radiotherapy at the Northern Israel Oncology Center during the years 1968 to 1979. Complete initial locoregional control was achieved in all patients; however, 18 patients (62%) relapsed. Two of the relapsing patients (11%) had "in field" failure, and one (6%) had "marginal" failure, with no evidence of disease elsewhere. 13 of the relapsing patients (72%) failed at distant sites, and two of these (11%) both locally and systemically. 13 of 15

Quantitative multivariate analysis of myoepithelioma and myoepithelial carcinoma.

The nuclear DNA content and morphologic data of 30 surgical samples (eight normal parotid gland, 12 myoepithelioma, and 10 myoepithelial carcinoma) were analyzed by the IBAS II analysis system. The results suggest that there are relationships between tumor ploidy distribution and prognosis, and that correct pathologic diagnosis can be obtained by the IBAS image system.

Cytotoxic Activity of Parotid Gland Toxins from Ingerophrynus philippinicus (Philippine Toad) Against Human Colorectal Carcinoma (HCT-116).

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer is the third most prevalent cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Limitations of current treatments include adverse effects and drug resistance, highlighting the need for new chemotherapeutic agents. This study evaluated the cytotoxic activity of crude methanolic extract of the parotid gland secretions of Ingerophrynus philippinicus (PGSE), a toad endemic to the Philippines, against human colorectal carcinoma cell line (HCT-116) and identified its bioactive compounds. METHODS: Crude methanolic extract of parotid gland secretions

Conversion surgery following trastuzumab and docetaxel combination therapy for unresectable HER2-positive parotid gland cancer.

Salivary gland cancers (SGCs) are rare and histologically diverse tumors. Among them, salivary duct carcinoma and carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma frequently exhibit HER2 overexpression, for which trastuzumab (Tmab) combined with docetaxel (DTX) has shown clinical efficacy. We report two cases of initially unresectable, HER2-positive parotid gland carcinoma successfully treated with Tmab and DTX, enabling curative surgery. In Case 1, a 68-year-old woman with T4bN2bM0 parotid carcinoma experienced marked tumor shrinkage, allowing surgical resection while preserving the skin and facial nerve. In

Late-xerostomia prediction model based on 18F-FDG PET image biomarkers of the main salivary glands.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Recently, a comprehensive xerostomia prediction model was published, based on baseline xerostomia, mean dose to parotid glands (PG) and submandibular glands (SMG). Previously, PET imaging biomarkers (IBMs) of PG were shown to improve xerostomia prediction. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the potential improvement of the additional PET-IBMs from both PG and SMG to the recent comprehensive xerostomia prediction model (i.e., the reference model). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Totally, 540 head and neck cancer patients were split into training and validation cohorts. PET-I

Mid-treatment 18F-FDG PET imaging changes in parotid gland correlates to radiation-induced xerostomia.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to measure functional changes in parotid glands using mid-treatment FDG-PET/CT and correlate early imaging changes to subsequent xerostomia in mucosal head and neck squamous cell carcinoma patients undergoing radiotherapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 56 patients from two prospective imaging biomarker studies underwent FDG-PET/CT at baseline and during radiotherapy (week 3). Both parotid glands were volumetrically delineated at each time point. PET parameter SUVmedian were calculated for ipsilateral and contralateral parotid glands. Absolute and relative change

Assessment of gene expressions from squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck to predict radiochemotherapy-related xerostomia and dysphagia.

PURPOSE: We tested the hypothesis that gene expressions from biopsies of locally advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients can supplement dose-volume parameters to predict dysphagia and xerostomia following primary radiochemotherapy (RCTx). MATERIAL AND METHODS: A panel of 178 genes previously related to radiochemosensitivity of HNSCC was considered for nanoString analysis based on tumour biopsies of 90 patients with locally advanced HNSCC treated by primary RCTx. Dose-volume parameters were extracted from the parotid, submandibular glands, oral cavity, larynx, buccal mu

Salivary gland tumours: an epidemiological review of non-neoplastic and neoplastic pathology.

Salivary gland tumours (SGT) demonstrate geographical variation. The primary objective of this study was to determine the types, frequency, distribution, and demographics of non-neoplastic and neoplastic salivary gland pathology at Waikato Hospital, New Zealand (NZ) over a 10-year period. Following this we conducted a 10-year retrospective review of SGT epidemiology from international literature. In total 825 patients were identified, 31% (256/825) with non-neoplastic salivary gland pathology, 34% (284/825) with benign neoplastic pathology, 14% (118/825) with primary malignant lesions, 18% (14

Short communication: Distribution of phospholipids in parotid cancer by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization imaging mass spectrometry.

BACKGROUND: Parotid cancer is relatively rare, and malignancy varies; therefore, novel markers are needed to predict prognosis. Recent advances in matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization imaging mass spectrometry (MALDI-IMS), useful for visualization of lipid molecules, have revealed the relationship between cancer and lipid metabolism, indicating the potential of lipids as biomarkers. However, the distribution and importance of phospholipids in parotid cancer remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to use MALDI-IMS to comprehensively investigate the spatial distribution of phospholip
