Impact of the DREAMS Partnership on social support and general self-efficacy among adolescent girls and young women: causal analysis of population-based cohorts in Kenya and South Africa.

INTRODUCTION: The Determined, Resilient, Empowered, AIDS-free, Mentored and Safe (DREAMS) Partnership aimed to influence psychosocial processes that promote empowerment among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW), and reduce HIV incidence. We estimated the impact of DREAMS on aspects of AGYW's collective and individual agency (specifically, social support and self-efficacy), in three settings where DREAMS was implemented from 2016 until at least end 2018. METHODS: Research cohorts of ~1500 AGYW aged 13-22 were randomly selected from demographic platforms in Kenya (Nairobi; Gem) and South Af

Perceived influence of alcohol consumption, substance use, and mental health on PrEP adherence and condom use among PrEP-prescribed gay, bisexual, and other men-who-have-sex-with-men: a qualitative investigation.

BACKGROUND: Gay, bisexual, and other men-who-have-sex-with-men (GBMSM) continue to be disproportionately affected by Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Although HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) offers an effective means of reducing incident HIV among this population, the HIV-preventive success of oral-based PrEP is contingent upon regimen adherence. Elevated rates of alcohol-, substance use-, and mental health-related issues among GBMSM potentially hinder PrEP-taking efforts, however the evidence for this remains mixed. Accordingly, the present study entailed a comprehensive qualitative in

Implementation and maintenance of an emergency department naloxone distribution and peer recovery specialist program.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Emergency department (ED)-based naloxone distribution and peer-based behavioral counseling have been shown to be feasible, but little is known about utilization maintenance over time and clinician, patient, and visit level factors influencing implementation. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of an ED overdose prevention program providing take-home naloxone, behavioral counseling, and treatment linkage for patients treated for an opioid overdose at two Rhode Island EDs from 2017 to 2020: one tertiary referral center and a community hospital. Utilizing a Reach,

Comparative pathological characteristics of papillary thyroid carcinoma with second primary non-thyroid malignancies in the region affected by the Chernobyl accident.

The aim was to study the pathological features of papillary thyroid carcinoma diagnosed with or before second primary malignancy in patients exposed to post-Chernobyl exposure. The patients selected (n = 6559) were those exposed to radiation at the age of ≤ 18 years old and developed papillary thyroid carcinoma during the years 1990-2020. Of these, 2.1% (n = 140) had second primary malignancies. To compare the histopathological characteristics of papillary thyroid carcinoma in the group under analysis, 91% (n = 128) with sufficient data were included in further analysis. The control group was

Factors Associated With Community Health Worker Performance Differ by Task in a Multi-Tasked Setting in Rural Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: Zimbabwe, like most low-income countries, faces health worker shortages. Community health workers (CHWs) bridge this gap by delivering essential health services and nutrition interventions to communities. However, as workloads increase, CHWs' ability to provide quality services may be compromised. We studied influences upon CHWs' performance related to pregnancy surveillance and nutrition and hygiene education in rural Zimbabwe. METHODS: In the context of a cluster-randomized trial conducted in 2 rural districts between November 2012 and March 2015, 342 government-employed CHWs id

Adolescent mothers and their children in later life.

The popular belief that early childbearing almost certainly leads to school dropout, subsequent unwanted births and economic dependence is greatly oversimplified, if not seriously distorted: A longitudinal study of over 300 primarily urban black women who gave birth as adolescents in the middle to late 1960s shows that a substantial majority completed high school, found regular employment and, even if they had at some point been on welfare, eventually managed to escape dependence on public assistance. Relatively few ended up with large families; most had fewer births than they had wanted or ex

Factors that influence caregivers' and adolescents' views and practices regarding human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination for adolescents: a qualitative evidence synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination in adolescents provides a powerful tool for preventing cervical cancer in women and other HPV-associated diseases in people of all genders. HPV vaccines have been progressively introduced in many countries. However, worldwide, many adolescents do not receive HPV vaccination, for various reasons. The HPV vaccine might be costly or unavailable, healthcare systems might lack capacity for its delivery, or adolescent health might not be prioritised. Some caregivers and adolescents may not accept available HPV vaccines and vaccination services. We c

Multi-disciplinary rehabilitation for acquired brain injury in adults of working age.

BACKGROUND: Evidence from systematic reviews demonstrates that multi-disciplinary rehabilitation is effective in the stroke population, in which older adults predominate. However, the evidence base for the effectiveness of rehabilitation following acquired brain injury (ABI) in younger adults has not been established, perhaps because this scenario presents different methodological challenges in research. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of multi-disciplinary rehabilitation following ABI in adults 16 to 65 years of age. SEARCH METHODS: We ran the most recent search on 14 September 2015. We s

The Impact of Uterine Peristalsis on Clinical Pregnancy Rates in In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF): A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Uterine peristalsis - rhythmic, wave-like contractile activity of the subendometrial myometrium - has been proposed as a factor that may influence embryo implantation. Whether peristaltic frequency measured around the time of embryo transfer is associated with clinical pregnancy in in vitro fertilisation (IVF) remains incompletely resolved, and existing syntheses have pooled studies in which the exposure was not measured during the transfer cycle itself. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses

The Effects of Advanced Resistance Training Prescription Methods on Strength, Power, Hypertrophy, and Performance Adaptations in Healthy Adults: A Systematic Review and Bayesian Network Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Advanced resistance training methods are commonly promoted as superior for long-term improvements in physical qualities and performance capacities. However, at present, there is no clear evidence that advanced resistance training methods are better than traditional approaches, or than one another, in promoting adaptation in healthy adults. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review and Bayesian network meta-analysis aimed to (1) compare advanced methods of resistance training prescription and their effects on strength, power, hypertrophy, and performance adaptations in healthy adults; (2)

Healthy Trust and Pandemic Readiness in the Context of Messenger RNA Vaccines: Protocol for a Sequential Deliberative Dialogue Study.

BACKGROUND: Pandemics threaten economies, security, and public health, requiring strong global and local collaboration and coordination. Public receptivity to emergent vaccine technologies is essential to pandemic readiness. Although messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines offer rapid adaptability and hold promise, their use during the COVID-19 pandemic was met with polarizing debates that raise questions about the conditions needed to support acceptable and equitable use of new vaccines. OBJECTIVE: This deliberative dialogue study aims to generate consensus on how to ensure informed, accessible public

A multicentre randomised, double-blind, double-dummy phase II clinical trial of benznidazole versus nifurtimox in adults with chronic Chagas disease in Brazil, alongside a prospective cohort: the BENBRASIL trial protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Chagas disease (CD) remains a major cause of cardiac and digestive morbidity and premature death in the Americas. Although benznidazole (BZN) and nifurtimox (NFX) are the only two available trypanocidal agents worldwide, direct comparisons between these two drugs in Brazilian adults are lacking. Therapeutic efficacy in chronically infected adults remains unclear as parasitological response is variable and serological negativisation is not frequent within short-term follow-up. Furthermore, the genetic diversity of Trypanosoma cruzi may influence treatment response and has been lar

Effects of behavioral intervention components to increase COVID-19 testing for African American/Black and Latine frontline essential workers not up-to-date on COVID-19 vaccination: Results of an optimization randomized controlled trial.

Racial/ethnic disparities in COVID-19, including incidence, hospitalization, and death rates, are serious and persistent. Among those at highest risk for COVID-19 and its adverse effects are African American/Black and Latine (AABL) frontline essential workers in public-facing occupations (e.g., food services, retail). Testing for COVID-19 in various scenarios (when exposed or symptomatic, regular screening testing) is an essential component of the COVID-19 control strategy in the United States. However, AABL frontline workers have serious barriers to COVID-19 testing at the individual (insuffi

Strategies for Tailoring Patient-Centered Technologies Across the Cancer Continuum: Protocol for a Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, cancer is more prevalent in racial and ethnic minority groups and in rural-dwelling and low-income people. Compared with White people of non-Hispanic descent, Black and African American people have higher cancer mortality and Hispanic people are more likely to be diagnosed with infection-related cancers. In addition, people who live in persistent poverty areas are more vulnerable to cancer mortality. Tailoring health information technologies (HITs) can help bridge health inequities by providing these populations with relevant health information and cancer care

Process Evaluations of Interventions for the Prevention of Type 2 Diabetes in Women With Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is characterized by hyperglycemia in pregnancy and typically resolves after birth. Women with GDM have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) later in life compared to those with normoglycemic pregnancy. While diabetes prevention interventions (DPIs) have been developed to delay or prevent the onset of T2DM, few studies have provided process evaluation (PE) data to assess the mechanisms of impact, quality of implementation, or contextual factors that may influence the effectiveness of the intervention. OBJECTIVE: This st

Estimated disability weights for the severity of health outcomes: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The disability weight quantifies the severity of health states from diseases and injuries. It is a fundamental index to estimate the disability-adjusted life year in the Global Burden of Disease studies. Disability weight estimates have been shown to vary across different national populations, suggesting the influence of cultural differences. However, survey data of disability weights in the Global Burden of Disease study is still limited worldwide. OBJECTIVES: To more accurately reflect the true health conditions of global populations, this study aims to systematically summarize
