Clinical Features and isokinetic Parameters in Assessing Injury Risk in elite Football Players.

Football players frequently face the occurrence of non-contact injuries. Although there are likely multiple factors that contribute to increased risk of non-contact injury, it remains a challenge to correlate all these factors. However, it is not clear how much of individual training abilities may interfere in these events. As such, the primary aim of the present study was to determine whether the reduction of functional performance of the thigh in the isokinetic knee tests, anthropometric and morbid history can establish risk factors for lower-limb musculoskeletal injuries throughout the seas

Evaluating the efficacy of Internet-Based Exercise programme Aimed at Treating knee Osteoarthritis (iBEAT-OA) in the community: a study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disease worldwide. As of today, there are no disease-modifying drugs, but th … testing, musculoskeletal ultrasound scan, muscle thickness assessment of the vastus lateralis, and quadriceps muscles force generation during an isokinetic maximum voluntary contraction (MVC). Samples of urine, blood, faeces and synovial fluid will be collected to establish biomarkers associated with changes in pain and sleep patterns in individuals affected with …

Metabolites of Heroin in Several Different Post-mortem Matrices.

In some forensic autopsies blood is not available, and other matrices are sampled for toxicological analysis. The aims of the present study were to examine whether heroin metabolites can be detected in different post-mortem matrices, and investigate whether analyses in other matrices can give useful information about concentrations in peripheral blood. Effects of ethanol on the metabolism and distribution of heroin metabolites were also investigated. We included 45 forensic autopsies where morphine was detected in peripheral blood, concomitantly with 6-acetylmorphine (6-AM) detected in any mat

Does the rectus femoris nerve block improve knee recurvatum in adult stroke patients? A kinematic and electromyographic study.

Knee recurvatum (KR) during gait is common in hemiplegic patients. Quadriceps spasticity has been postulated as a cause of KR in this population. The aim of this study was to assess the role of rectus femoris spasticity in KR by using selective motor nerve blocks of the rectus femoris nerve in hemiparetic stroke patients. The data from six adult, post-stroke hemiplegic patients who underwent a rectus femoris nerve block for a stiff-knee gait were retrospectively analyzed. An extensive clinical and functional evaluation was performed and gait was assessed by motion analysis (kinematic, kinetic

Rectus femoris to gracilis muscle transfer with fractional lengthening of the vastus muscles: a treatment for adults with stiff knee gait.

BACKGROUND: Stiff knee gait, which may be seen in patients with upper motor neuron injury, describes a gait pattern with a relative loss of sagittal knee motion. It interferes with foot clearance during swing, often leading to inefficient compensatory mechanisms and ambulatory dysfunction. Distal rectus femoris muscle transfers and fractional lengthening of the vastus muscles have been performed in adult patients. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to describe a unique surgical technique and report on initial outcomes. DESIGN: A retrospective case-series study design was used. METHODS

[A 21-year-old man with distal dominant progressive muscle atrophy].

We report a 21-year-old man with distal dominant progressive muscle atrophy. The patient was apparently well until 17 years of age when he noted a decrease in exercise tolerance. One year later, he noted difficulty in arising his heels when the walked. He was admitted to our service for the work up in June 10, 1992. On admission, the patient was rather slender in the body build up; otherwise general physical examination was unremarkable. Upon neurologic examination, mental status and higher cerebral functions were normal. In the cranial nerves, the sternocleidomastoid muscles were atrophic bil

The effects of blood flow restriction training during low intensity online resistance training with older adults.

PURPOSE: Blood flow restriction (BFR) training involves limiting blood flow to specific areas, enabling low-intensity exercise to mimic high-intensity workouts. This study explored the effectiveness of combining BFR with online exercise classes to improve strength and functionality in older adults. METHODS: Over ten weeks, men and women, N = 41 with 22 BFR and 19 control (CON), (mean age = 70 ± 6.2) participated in Zoom sessions twice a week. Strength in the hamstrings and quadriceps was assessed using a dynamometer, while functionality was tested with the 30-second sit-to-stand, 8-foot timed

Exercise interventions for knee osteoarthritis: A narrative review of mechanisms, modalities, and clinical implementation.

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic, multifactorial joint disorder involving cartilage degeneration, subchondral bone changes, synovial inflammation, and neuromuscular dysfunction. Exercise is first-line therapy, yet heterogeneity in modalities, dosing, and delivery limits practical guidance. A narrative review was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, Frontiers, and ScienceDirect (2021-2026), focusing on aerobic, resistance, aquatic, and mind-body exercise studies. Data were extracted on type, intensity, frequency, duration, delivery, and outcomes, and synthesized narratively to p

Does Muscle Development of Sport Horses Using Water Treadmill Exercise as Part of a Long-Term Training Programme Differ from That of Horses Not Using Water Treadmill Exercise?

Water treadmill (WT) exercise has become a popular tool for equine training and rehabilitation. However, few studies describe the long-term effects of WT exercise in low water on muscle development (MD). This study's objectives were to compare MD changes over a 40-week period in sport horses that regularly used WT in low water within training (Group WTH, n = 55) and a control group that did not (control, n = 28). Subjective MD assessments were undertaken using an adaptation of a previously published method at weeks 0, 20 and 40. For Group WTH, MD significantly increased in the neck, pelvis and

A Critical Analysis of the Factors Contributing to Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injuries in Female Athletes.

Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injuries are a prevalent concern in athletic population, particularly among female athletes who are disproportionately affected. The increased incidence of ACL injuries in females is attributed to a combination of anatomical, physiological, and biomechanical factors that influence knee stability. This review comprehensively explores these contributing factors, highlighting gender-specific anatomical differences such as wider pelvis, increased quadriceps (Q) angle, and steeper tibial slopes, all of which predispose females to greater knee valgus during dynamic a

[Transient Femoral Nerve Palsy after Ilioinguinal-Iliohypogastric Nerve Block: Comparison of Ultrasound-guided and Landmark-based Techniques in Adult Inguinal Hernia Surgery].

BACKGROUND: Transient femoral nerve palsy (TFNP) is a well-known complication associated with ilioinguinal-iliohypogastric nerve block (IINB). We compared the incidence of TFNP after ultrasound-guided IINB and that after anatomical landmark-based IINB. METHODS: We reviewed medical records of adult patients (ASA-PS 1-3, Age 21-87) who had received inguinal hernia surgery under general anesthesia and LINB retrospectively. IINB was performed using 0.5% ropivacaine either by ultrasound-guidance (US group, n = 16) or by landmark-based technique (LM group, n =17). TFNP was defined as sensory loss i

The results of adductor magnus tenodesis in adolescents with recurrent patellar dislocation.

Recurrent dislocation of the patella is a common orthopaedic problem which occurs in about 44% of cases after first-time dislocation. In mos … nce angle, were seen (P < 0.001). A statistically significant improvement in the peak torque of the quadriceps muscle and flexor was observed for 60°/sec and 180°/sec angular velocities (P = 0.01). Our results confirm the efficacy of MPFL reconstruction using the adductor magnus tendon in children and adolescents with recurrent patellar dislocation.

Muscle histopathology and physiology in chronic fatigue syndrome.

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is characterized by fatigue at rest which is made worse by exercise. Previous biopsy studies on small numbers of CFS patients have shown a range of morphological changes to which have been attributed fatigue and myalgia. We have now studied 108 patients with CFS or muscle pain and 22 normal volunteers by light and electron microscopy. There was no consistent correlation between symptoms and changes in fibre type prevalence, fibre size, degenerative or regenerative features, glycogen depletion, or mitochondrial abnormalities. Physiological contractile properties o

Human spinal locomotor control is based on flexibly organized burst generators.

Constant drive provided to the human lumbar spinal cord by epidural electrical stimulation can cause local neural circuits to generate rhythmic motor outputs to lower limb muscles in people paralysed by spinal cord injury. Epidural spinal cord stimulation thus allows the study of spinal rhythm and pattern generating circuits without their configuration by volitional motor tasks or task-specific peripheral feedback. To reveal spinal locomotor control principles, we studied the repertoire of rhythmic patterns that can be generated by the functionally isolated human lumbar spinal cord, detected a

No Association Between Hamstrings-to-Quadriceps Strength Ratio and Second ACL Injuries After Accounting for Prognostic Factors: A Cohort Study of 574 Patients After ACL-Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: The stress on the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) induced by the quadriceps can be attenuated by activation of the hamstrings by exerting an opposing torque to the anterior translation of tibia. Consequently, considering the ratio between strength of the hamstrings-to-quadriceps (HQ-ratio) may be of value to reduce the odds of second ACL injuries. The objective was therefore to evaluate (1) the association between HQ-ratio and the occurrence of a second ACL injury in patients after ACL-reconstruction within 2 years of return to preinjury sport level and (2) to compare the HQ-ratio

The repeated bout effect influences lower-extremity biomechanics during a 30-min downhill run.

The repeated bout effect in eccentric-biased exercises is a well-known phenomenon, wherein a second bout of exercise results in attenuated strength loss and soreness compared to the first bout. We sought to determine if the repeated bout effect influences changes in lower-extremity biomechanics over the course of a 30-min downhill run. Eleven male participants completed two bouts of 30-min downhill running (DR1 and DR2) at 2.8 m.s-1 and -11.3° on an instrumented treadmill. Three-dimensional kinematics and ground reaction forces were recorded and used to quantify changes in spatiotemporal param
