Occupational health challenges in mining: a study on spinal cord injuries and their impact on miners.

OBJECTIVES: Mining remains a high-risk industry, with spinal cord injuries (SCIs) among its most serious outcomes. These irreversible injuries, caused by heavy machinery accidents, falls and rockfalls, profoundly affect miners' quality of life (QoL) and work capacity. This study compared the QoL and general health of miners with non-surgical SCIs sustained at least 2 years earlier with those of miners without SCIs. METHODS: Two hundred miners with SCIs and 200 controls completed the 'Quality of Life and General Health' section of the international spinal cord injury questionnaire (InSCI-Q). T

Proactively unpacking socio-technical hazards in aviation management of change: an application of the accident scenario model for systemic risk identification.

Management of change (MoC) processes often fail to prevent incidents by overlooking emergent socio-technical hazards. Conventional assessments lack the systemic depth to proactively identify these factors. This study addresses this gap by evaluating the accident scenario model as a proactive methodology for MoC hazard identification. Employing a single-case study of an Indonesian aviation provider's MoC project, data (documents, interviews, observations) were triangulated and findings validated through focus group discussions. The methodology successfully identified 11 major socio-technical ha

Interference of high 50/60-Hz electric and magnetic fields with the normal functioning of active cardiac implants: implications for newly implanted workers returning to or entering work in the utility sector.

The 50/60-Hz electric and magnetic fields in substations or under high-voltage lines may interfere with the operation of cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs). This review of the literature over the last 20 years provides guidance to occupational physicians who give orientations when newly implanted workers return to or enter work. For magnetic fields, CIEDs are generally not affected up to 100 μT. For electric fields, CIEDs set to nominal sensitivity and in bipolar mode are unaffected up to 5 kV/m. Clinically significant or symptomatic disturbances are unlikely up to 10 kV/m. Specifi

An In-Field Evaluation of Forearm Muscle Activity During a Manual Weld Task While Using a Soft Hand Exoskeleton.

OCCUPATIONAL APPLICATIONWearing the IronHand® resulted in minor, if any, reductions in muscle activity during a welding task. While the intervention was not beneficial, the task was already deemed acceptable using APDFs and remained so while the device was worn. There were minor differences between the participants' benefits and experience, reaffirming that not all individuals will respond the same way to interventions using exoskeletons. Devices that provide assistive forces at the hand may not be as effective as those targeting the shoulder and back. More work is needed to evaluate how force
