Symptomatic plate removal after treatment of facial fractures.

AIMS: To identify the rates and reasons for plate removal (PR) among patients treated for facial fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retros … other locations (p<0.001). Orbital rim plates had a higher risk of being removed than maxillary or frontal bone plates (p=0.02). CONCLUSIONS: Subjective discomfort is a notable reason for PR among Finnish patients, suggesting that the cold climate has an influence on the need for removal. Patients receiving mandibular osteosynthesis with miniplates from an i …

Neurophysiologic and immunologic abnormalities associated with feline immunodeficiency virus molecular clone FIV-PPR DNA inoculation.

Although direct feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) proviral DNA inoculation has been shown to be infectious in cats, long-term studies to assess the pathogenic nature of DNA inoculation are lacking. We have recently reported that direct feline leukemia virus (FeLV) DNA inoculation resulted in infection and the development of FeLV-related disease end points with similar temporal expression and virulence to that of cats infected with whole virus. We show in this study that pFIV-PPR DNA inoculation resulted in infection of cats and the development of FIV-related immunologic and neurologic abnorm

Shape Prediction of Nasal Bones by Digital 2D-Photogrammetry of the Nose Based on Convolution and Back-Propagation Neural Network.

In rhinoplasty, it is necessary to consider the correlation between the anthropometric indicators of the nasal bone, so that it prevents surgical complications and enhances the patient's satisfaction. The penetrating form of high-energy electromagnetic radiation is highly impacted on human health, which has often raised concerns of alternative method for facial analysis. The critical stage to assess nasal morphology is the nasal analysis on its anthropology that is highly reliant on the understanding of the structural features of the nasal radix. For example, the shape and size of nasal bone f

En-bloc posterior vault distraction including the foramen magnum for Chiari I malformation in severe syndromic craniosynostosis: First cases and literature review.

This case series describes two patients with severe Crouzon syndrome and persistent Chiari I malformation. Initial treatment with standard posterior vault distraction osteogenesis and frontoorbital advancement failed to resolve the patient's symptoms. One patient developed severe syringomyelia and myelopathy refractory even to standard suboccipital decompression. Given the persistent posterior fossa constriction, an en-bloc posterior vault distraction incorporating the foramen magnum was performed over 21 days, achieving an expansion of 20 mm. This approach resulted in complete symptom resolut

Predictors of Postoperative Complications of Craniosynostosis Repair in the National Inpatient Sample.

INTRODUCTION: Timing of intervention and complication profiles in surgical repair of craniosynostosis have been widely debated. Early intervention is frequently promoted as a means of decreasing morbidity while maintaining favorable outcomes via minimally invasive techniques such as endoscopic strip craniectomy. Immediate postoperative morbidity due to complications of early vs late intervention remains a key element in comparing timing and technique for craniosynostosis repair. In addition, concurrent fronto-orbital advancement with open cranial vault remodeling may increase the risk of posto

Metopic synostosis: Measuring intracranial volume change following fronto-orbital advancement using three-dimensional photogrammetry.

There is still disagreement regarding the intracranial volumes of patients with metopic synostosis compared with healthy patients. This study aimed to compare the intracranial volume of children with metopic synostosis before and after surgery to an age- and sex-matched control cohort using three-dimensional (3D) photogrammetry. Eighteen boys with metopic synostosis were operated on using standardized fronto-orbital advancement. Frontal, posterior and total intracranial volumes were measured exactly 1 day pre-operatively and 10 days post-operatively, using 3D photogrammetry. To establish an ag

The Christmas tree foreheadplasty: a novel technique used in combination with a bandeau for fronto-orbital remodelling in craniosynostosis.

PURPOSE: Craniosynostosis of the coronal, metopic and frontosphenoidal sutures results in deformity of the forehead. This may cause both functional and psychological difficulties for patient and parent. We describe a novel surgical technique, the 'Christmas tree foreheadplasty', used in combination with a supraorbital bandeau to achieve fronto-orbital remodelling. METHODS: Between November 2008 and September 2011, 32 patients with craniosynostosis underwent fronto-orbital remodelling with a supraorbital bandeau in combination with Christmas tree foreheadplasty. Indications for surgery, age at

Induced oral breathing and craniocervical postural relations: an experimental study in healthy young adults.

The influence of induced oral breathing on head and craniocervical posture was studied in ten healthy young adults. After a baseline recording, oral respiration was induced by using a swimmer's type nose clip. The subjects were filmed 15 and 90 minutes after wearing the nose clip, immediately and 15 minutes after taking it off. The angles C7-tragion versus the true vertical, nasion-tragion versus the vertical, and C7-tragion-nasion were calculated, and the difference between the baseline and the four experimental recordings was computed. During the experiment, head and neck positions were modi

Imaging features of calvarial tuberculosis: a study of 42 cases.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Tuberculosis of the calvaria is a rare entity, and only anecdotal reports describing its imaging features have been previously published in the literature. We report the role of conventional radiography and CT findings on in the evaluation of calvarial tuberculosis in 42 cases. METHODS: Forty-two cases of pathologically verified calvarial tuberculosis were analyzed retrospectively by using conventional radiography and CT imaging. The patients included 28 male and 14 female subjects ranging in age from 5 to 48 years (mean age, 16 years). Surgery was performed in 28 pati

Titanium mesh and bone dust calvarial patch during cranioplasty.

A technique of filling calvarial defects using bone dust reinforced with titanium Micro Mesh (Leibinger) was investigated using plain x-ray films and computed tomography (CT) in seven consecutive patients (age range, 7-21 years). The aim of our study was to assess whether, in the presence of the titanium, bone dust harvested with a power burr promotes persistent ossification that is comparable with adjacent bone. The mesh was localized by standard skull plain x-ray films, and orthogonal CT scans were obtained at between 9 and 18 months post-operatively. An ultrahigh-resolution algorithm was us

Three-dimensional study of 31 cases of synostotic anterior plagiocephaly before and after surgical management the Lille protocol.

Synostotic anterior plagiocephaly is a rare pathological cranial malformation. Therapeutic options are rarely studied due to the rarity of the malformation and difficulties in diagnosis and care management. The objective of this study was to analyze the results obtained with the Lille protocol based on 62 CT-scans done before and after surgery in 31 patients. A specific analysis was designed for this work. Nine cephalometric measures enabled to evidence on each CT-Scan the corrections made on the fronto-orbital bandeau and the potential impact of surgery on the craniofacial structures. Results

The Terracol and Ardouin developmental model of frontal sinus drainage pathway and surrounding spaces: a radiologic validation.

BACKGROUND: The complexity of the frontal sinus drainage pathway (FSDP) can be challenging even for expert surgeons. Several classifications have been proposed to simplify the understanding of FSDP, whose anatomical variability can be simplified based on the knowledge of its developmental mechanisms. METHODS: Cone-beam computed tomography studies performed at the Unit of Radiology of the University of Brescia between March and November 2012 were retrospectively analyzed. FSDP was classified as medial or lateral to the vertical portion of the uncinate process and the following anatomical varia
