Cost-effectiveness of neonatal ECG screening for the long QT syndrome.

AIMS: A significant number of preventable cardiac deaths in infancy and childhood are due to long QT syndrome (LQTS) and to unrecognized neonatal congenital heart diseases (CHDs). Both carry a serious risk for avoidable mortality and morbidity but effective treatments exist to prevent lethal arrhythmias or to allow early surgical correction before death or irreversible cardiac damage. As an electrocardiogram (ECG) allows recognition of LQTS and of some of the CHDs that have escaped medical diagnosis, and as LQTS also contributes to sudden infant death syndrome, we have analysed the cost-effect

Reliability of uncertainty quantification methods for deep learning auto-segmentation in head and neck organs at risk.

Objective.Deep learning auto-segmentation has greatly advanced contouring in radiotherapy. However, quality assurance remains necessary due to performance fluctuation among individual patients. This manual process reintroduces variability and partially reduces time-saving benefits. As a solution, uncertainty quantification (UQ) is increasingly explored for its ability to estimate output confidence. While numerous methods to quantify uncertainty exist, their comparative reliability remains underexplored. This study compares the reliability of commonly used UQ approaches for auto-segmentation in

Analysis of Health-Related Quality of Life in Multiple Sclerosis: A Bayesian Quantile LASSO Approach.

Background/Objectives: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a complex, chronic autoimmune neuroinflammatory disorder that significantly impacts patients' health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and increases the burden of healthcare costs. However, evidence that quantifies the covariate-adjusted differences between the MS and non-MS populations is limited due to the presence of outliers, which frequentist approaches may not adequately address. Therefore, this study aims to examine healthcare expenditure and HRQoL in patients with MS compared to the non-MS population using a robust Bayesian approach. Meth

Uncertainty-aware segmentation quality prediction via deep learning Bayesian Modeling: Comprehensive evaluation and interpretation on skin cancer and liver segmentation.

Image segmentation is a critical step in computational biomedical image analysis, typically evaluated using metrics like the Dice coefficient during training and validation. However, in clinical settings without manual annotations, assessing segmentation quality becomes challenging, and models lacking reliability indicators face adoption barriers. To address this gap, we propose a novel framework for predicting segmentation quality without requiring ground truth annotations during test time. Our approach introduces two complementary frameworks: one leveraging predicted segmentation and uncerta

Breast Organ Dose and Radiation Exposure Reduction in Full-Spine Radiography: A Phantom Model Using PCXMC.

Background/Objectives: Full-spine radiography is frequently performed from childhood to adulthood, raising concerns about radiation-induced breast cancer risk. To assess such probabilistic risks as cancer, accurate estimation of equivalent and effective organ doses is essential. The purpose of this study is to investigate X-ray imaging conditions for radiation reduction based on breast organ dose and to evaluate the accuracy of simulation software for dose calculation. Methods: Breast organ doses from full-spine radiography were calculated using the Monte Carlo-based dose calculation software

Gravity versus pump-driven infusion in targeted radionuclide therapy: a model-based dosimetric evaluation of extravasation.

BACKGROUND: Intravenous administration of [Formula: see text]Lu-labeled radiopharmaceuticals (RPMs) such as PSMA and DOTATATE entails a risk of extravasation, potentially resulting in absorbed doses exceeding thresholds for deterministic tissue damage. Gravity-driven and pump-assisted infusion methods differ in dilution and flow dynamics, which directly affect the extravasated dose. This study aimed to extend and validate an analytical model for quantitative comparison of extravasation-related dosimetric risks between both strategies and to inform clinical protocol optimization. METHODS: A pr

Observability- and Identifiability-Guided Sensor-Set Design for Digital-Twin-Assisted Consolidated Bioprocessing.

Consolidated bioprocessing (CBP) is difficult to monitor because enzyme production, lignocellulose degradation, sugar release, and fermentation occur simultaneously under sparse measurement, feedstock variability, and plant-model mismatch conditions. This study proposes a computational sensor-set design framework for digital-twin-assisted CBP monitoring. A five-state virtual plant, consisting of active biomass, cellulolytic enzyme activity, residual insoluble substrate, soluble sugar, and ethanol, was used to evaluate all 16 ethanol-mandatory measurement packages formed from ethanol, sugar, bi

Veterinary-specific breakpoints for ceftiofur applicable to canine Escherichia coli.

Ceftiofur is a third-generation cephalosporin approved for veterinary applications and is used to treat Escherichia coli infections in dogs, particularly urinary tract infections (UTIs), in countries including China. Despite this use, there are no approved breakpoints for interpretation of ceftiofur susceptibility testing results. This absence limits the guidance that veterinarians need to effectively prescribe ceftiofur in dogs. It also limits the analysis of data from resistance monitoring and surveillance programs. This study aimed to establish ceftiofur interpretive categories and breakpoi

Robust optimization of catheter positions and dwell times for HDR prostate brachytherapy.

BACKGROUND: HDR prostate brachytherapy plans are sensitive to catheter placement uncertainty, as discrepancies between planned and delivered catheter positions can degrade target coverage and increase organ at risk dose. Current inverse planning methods optimize dwell times for a fixed implant geometry and do not account for geometric uncertainty during planning. Existing robust optimization approaches for HDR brachytherapy are similarly limited to dwell time optimization, and no framework has jointly optimized catheter configurations and dwell times while explicitly incorporating catheter ins

Fully automated intensity-modulated radiotherapy plans for rectal cancer based on deep learning predictions of three-dimensional dose distributions.

BACKGROUND: Designing intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) plans for rectal cancer is complex and time-consuming. We used a three-dimensional (3D) multitask training U-Net (3D MT-U-Net) deep learning (DL) model to accurately predict radiotherapy dose distributions for rectal cancer. We aimed to achieve fully automated IMRT plans with improved efficiency and quality. METHODS: We developed a 3D MT-U-Net model that precisely captured dose distribution characteristics through pretraining and a multitask learning mechanism. In the multitask learning module, we additionally introduced the learni

Parameter subset reduction for imaging-based digital twin generation of patients with left ventricular mechanical discoordination.

BACKGROUND: Integration of a patient's non-invasive imaging data in a digital twin (DT) of the heart can provide valuable insight into the myocardial disease substrates underlying left ventricular (LV) mechanical discoordination. However, when generating a DT, model parameters should be identifiable to obtain robust parameter estimations. In this study, we used the CircAdapt model of the human heart and circulation to find a subset of parameters which were identifiable from LV cavity volume and regional strain measurements of patients with different substrates of left bundle branch block (LBBB

PSMA-Hornet: Fully-automated, multi-target segmentation of healthy organs in PSMA PET/CT images.

BACKGROUND: Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) PET imaging represents a valuable source of information reflecting disease stage, response rate, and treatment optimization options, particularly with PSMA radioligand therapy. Quantification of radiopharmaceutical uptake in healthy organs from PSMA images has the potential to minimize toxicity by extrapolation of the radiation dose delivery towards personalization of therapy. However, segmentation and quantification of uptake in organs requires labor-intensive organ delineations that are often not feasible in the clinic nor scalable for la
