A synergistic approach for enhanced eye blink detection using wavelet analysis, autoencoding and Crow-Search optimized k-NN algorithm.

This research endeavor introduces a state-of-the-art, assimilated approach for eye blink detection from Electroencephalography signals. It combines the prominent strategies of wavelet analysis, autoencoding, and a Crow-Search-optimized k-Nearest Neighbors to enhance the performance of eye blink detection from EEG signals. This procedure is initiated by escalating the robustness of EEG data through jittering, which integrates noise into the dataset. Consequently, the wavelet transform is highly demanded during feature extraction in identifying the essential time-frequency components of the sign

Gait Phase Recognition in Multi-Task Scenarios Based on sEMG Signals.

In the human-exoskeleton interaction process, accurately recognizing gait phases is crucial for effectively assessing the assistance provided by the exoskeleton. However, due to the similarity in muscle activation patterns between adjacent gait phases, the recognition accuracy is often low, which can easily lead to confusion in surface electromyography (sEMG) feature extraction. This paper proposes a real-time recognition method based on multi-scale fuzzy approximate root mean entropy (MFAREn) and an Efficient Multi-Scale Attention Convolutional Neural Network (EMACNN), building upon the conce

ML-UrineQuant: A machine learning program for identifying and quantifying mouse urine on absorbent paper.

The void spot assay has gained popularity as a way of assessing functional bladder voiding parameters in mice, but analyzing the size and distribution of urine spot patterns on filter paper with software remains problematic due to inter-laboratory differences in image contrast and resolution quality and non-void artifacts. We have developed a machine learning algorithm based on Region-based Convolutional Neural Networks (Mask-RCNN) that was trained in object recognition to detect and quantitate urine spots across a broad range of sizes-ML-UrineQuant. The model proved extremely accurate at iden

Ensemble deep learning with advanced feature engineering for embryo evaluation on in-vitro fertilisation procedures using biomedical images.

In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is the most commonly used assisted reproductive technology employed to treat infertility. It includes intricate treatment processes such as egg retrieval, fertilisation, ovulation induction, embryo transfer, and implantation. The lower success rate of IVF was projected owing to the poor quality of embryos; thus, many embryos are frequently moved, raising difficulties for children and mothers, as well as increasing the cost of healthcare. A precise assessment of embryo grade, size, and developmental stage is significant in an embryo transfer program. Completely auto

Prediction of IUGR condition at birth by means of CTG recordings and a ResNet model.

OBJECTIVE: Sub-optimal uterine-placental perfusion and fetal nutrition can lead to intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), also called fetal growth restriction (FGR). Antenatal cardiotocography (CTG) can aid in the early detection of IUGR. Reliably diagnosing IUGR before delivery remains challenging, and deep learning (DL) techniques offer potential solutions. This paper describes the development of a DL approach to predict an IUGR condition at birth by using CTG signals collected during antenatal monitoring. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our method is encapsulated in the concept of a two-step train

Universal conditional networks (UniCoN) for multi-age embryonic cartilage segmentation with Sparsely annotated data.

Osteochondrodysplasia, affecting 2-3% of newborns globally, is a group of bone and cartilage disorders that often result in head malformations, contributing to childhood morbidity and reduced quality of life. Current research on this disease using mouse models faces challenges since it involves accurately segmenting (precisely delineating) the developing cartilage in 3D micro-CT images of embryonic mice. Tackling this segmentation task with deep learning (DL) methods is laborious due to the big burden of manual image annotation, expensive due to the high acquisition costs of 3D micro-CT images

An arbitrary-modal fusion network for volumetric cranial nerves tract segmentation.

The segmentation of cranial nerves (CNs) tract provides a valuable quantitative tool for the analysis of the morphology and trajectory of individual CNs. Multimodal CN segmentation networks, e.g., CNTSeg, which combine structural Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and diffusion MRI, have achieved promising segmentation performance. However, it is laborious or even infeasible to collect complete multimodal data in clinical practice due to limitations in equipment, user privacy, and working conditions. In this work, we propose a novel arbitrary-modal fusion network for volumetric CN segmentation,

Optimized segmentation of overlapping cervical cells based on Mask2Former and denoising.

Cell instances segmentation in cervical cytology images have crucial importance for cancer screening and automatic biomedical image analysis. However, that the highly overlapping cells cause ambiguous boundaries makes accurate cell segmentation still a challenging task. This paper proposes a novel transformer-based neural network to segment overlapping cervical cells, by using the technique of denoising with Mask2Former. The model optimization includes two aspects. One is that class embeddings of ground truth categories are used as extra content queries to transformer decoder. The other is tha

Active learning using adaptable task-based prioritisation.

Supervised machine learning-based medical image computing applications necessitate expert label curation, while unlabelled image data might be relatively abundant. Active learning methods aim to prioritise a subset of available image data for expert annotation, for label-efficient model training. We develop a controller neural network that measures priority of images in a sequence of batches, as in batch-mode active learning, for multi-class segmentation tasks. The controller is optimised by rewarding positive task-specific performance gain, within a Markov decision process (MDP) environment t

Accurately monitoring sleep for extended periods remains a challenge due to the cumbersome nature of conventional gold-standard techniques. We propose a novel deep learning method to estimate sleep status from an easily acquired abdominal respiratory effort signal. Our end-to-end convolutional neural network, developed on 476 hours of manually annotated polysomnography recordings from 53 participants, achieves an area under the curve of 0.90, and a more balanced performance across sensitivity and specificity than previous studies: 0.85 and 0.82, respectively. This method eliminates the need fo

A biologically inspired computational model of human ventral temporal cortex.

Our minds represent miscellaneous objects in the physical world metaphorically in an abstract and complex high-dimensional object space, which is implemented in a two-dimensional surface of the ventral temporal cortex (VTC) with topologically organized object selectivity. Here we investigated principles guiding the topographical organization of object selectivities in the VTC by constructing a hybrid Self-Organizing Map (SOM) model that harnesses a biologically inspired algorithm of wiring cost minimization and adheres to the constraints of the lateral wiring span of human VTC neurons.
