BACKGROUND: Salmonella antibodies are known to cross-react with other antigens including those from Escherichia coli. Malaria antigens may also have similar characteristics.
OBJECTIVES: To establish antibody levels in malaria patients and controls and to decipher (if any), relationship(s) between significant agglutinin responses to the various antigens as outcome factor and malaria parasitaemia as exposure factor.
STUDY SETTING: University of Benin Teaching Hospital and Egor Local Government Area of Edo state, Nigeria, between July and August, 1999.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective and a case cont

The global epidemic features of enteric fever have changed greatly in recent years. The incidence of enteric fever caused by Salmonella enterica serovar Paratyphi A has progressively increased. In some areas of Asia, infections with S. Paratyphi A have exceeded those with S. Typhi, resulting in S. Paratyphi A becoming the main causative agent of enteric fever. However, two currently licensed typhoid vaccines do not confer adequate cross-protection against S. Paratyphi A infection. Therefore, development of specific vaccines against enteric fever caused by S. Paratyphi A is urgently needed. In

BACKGROUND: Typhoid is a serious infectious disease that is highly prevalent in low and middle income countries (LMICs) and causes severe morbidity and mortality. Typhoid conjugate vaccines (TCVs) have been developed to prevent and control typhoid infection, however, overall and pooled evidence on vaccine efficacy, immunogenicity and safety profiles in the pediatric population is limited.
METHODOLOGY: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on August 12, 2025 using randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that assessed the vaccine efficacy of TCVs in the pediatric population. Included s

BACKGROUND: Randomised controlled trials of typhoid conjugate vaccines among children in Africa and Asia have shown high short-term efficacy. Data on the durability of protection beyond 2 years are sparse. We present the final analysis of a randomised controlled trial in Malawi, encompassing more than 4 years of follow-up, with the aim of investigating vaccine efficacy over time and by age group.
METHODS: In this phase 3, double-blind, randomised controlled efficacy trial in Blantyre, Malawi, healthy children aged 9 months to 12 years were randomly assigned (1:1) by an unmasked statistician t

OBJECTIVES: Typhoid remains a persistent contributor to childhood morbidity in communities lacking sanitation infrastructure. Typhoid conjugate vaccine (TCV) is effective in reducing disease risk in vaccinees; however, the duration of protection is unknown. This study measured the longevity of immune response to TCV in children aged under 10 years in Hyderabad, Pakistan, where an outbreak of extensively drug-resistant typhoid has been ongoing.
METHODS: A subset of children who received the TCV as part of the outbreak response were enrolled purposively from March 2018 to February 2019. The par

Typhoid fever has had a major impact on human populations, with the causative pathogen Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi implicated in many outbreaks through history. The current burden of disease is estimated at 11-18 million infections annually, with the majority of infections located in Africa and South Asia. Data that have been used to estimate burden are limited to a small number of blood-culture surveillance studies, largely from densely populated urban centers. Extrapolating these data to estimate disease burden within and across countries highlights the lack of precision in global figu

Salmonella is one of the key global causes of food and water borne enteric infections, responsible for significant morbidity and mortality worldwide especially in developing countries. Currently available vaccines against typhoid are moderately effective with several side effects and not efficacious against all Salmonella serovars. Due to limitations of these vaccines and emerging threats of multidrug resistance, developing an effective vaccine against these infections has increasingly become a priority. Heat shock proteins (Hsps), being evolutionarily conserved, represent dominant antigens in

BACKGROUND: Typhoid fever is classically caused by Salmonella enterica serotype typhi.Recently the frequency of isolation of S. paratyphi A (SPA) has been increased in comparison to S. typhi in Indian scenario.
AIM: To observe the rate of isolation and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of SPA from suspected enteric fever cases attending tertiary care centres of Eastern Orissa.
SETTINGS AND DESIGN: Retrospective study Materials and Methods: 1488 blood samples were collected during different duration of fever and cultured in BACTEC blood culture system and bottles showing signal for growth

BACKGROUND: Combined hepatitis A and typhoid vaccines have been widely used globally and proven to be safe, well tolerated and efficacious in adults. The combined hepatitis A and typhoid vaccine (Vivaxim) available in Australia is licenced for use from age 16 years but the monovalent components are approved for use from age 2 years. Advantages of a single injection have led to widespread 'off-label' use of Vivaxim in children. This study aimed to investigate the tolerability of Vivaxim in children aged 2-16 years.
METHODS: A prospective observational study was conducted at Travel Medicine All

Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi produces significant morbidity and mortality worldwide despite the fact that there are licensed Salmonella Typhi vaccines available. This is primarily due to the fact that these vaccines are not used in the countries that most need them. There is growing recognition that an effective invasive Salmonella vaccine formulation must also prevent infection due to other Salmonella serovars. We anticipate that a multivalent vaccine that targets the following serovars will be needed to control invasive Salmonella infections worldwide: Salmonella Typhi, Salmonella Parat

BACKGROUND: Despite 155000 deaths and over 90 million cases - and the current emergence of antimicrobial resistance - no vaccines are available against non-typhoid Salmonellae (NTS). We recently presented immunological arguments for using the oral Salmonella Typhi Ty21a as surrogate vaccine against NTS strains: Ty21a elicits intestinal antibodies against typhoidal O-9,12 antigen, and numerous NTS strains share one or both of these structures with S. Typhi. The Vi polysaccharide vaccine can, presumably because of contaminating typhoidal lipopolysaccharide, also elicit a humoral response to O-9,

BACKGROUND: Typhoid fever is one of the most common diagnoses in returned international travelers. Our aim was to study the typhoid vaccine prescription practices for travelers from Greece visiting developing countries.
METHODS: A prospective questionnaire-based study was conducted during 2009-2012 in 57 Public Health Departments, which are the only sources of typhoid vaccine in Greece.
RESULTS: A total of 3,680 travelers were studied (median age: 38.1 years). Typhoid vaccine was delivered to 1,108 (30.1%) of them. Of those who traveled to sub-Saharan Africa, South America, the Middle East,

A community outbreak of gastroenteritis in Australia during 2007-2009 was caused by ingestion of playground sand contaminated with Salmonella enterica Paratyphi B, variant Java. The bacterium was also isolated from local wildlife. Findings support consideration of nonfood sources during salmonellosis outbreak investigations and indicate transmission through the animal-human interface.

Today children are more frequently travelling worldwide, thus increasing their exposure to exotic pathogens and unexpected environmental hazards. In order to ensure the safety of their health while travelling, children should see the person in charge of their medical care well in advance of their journey to assess the status of their routine immunizations and to evaluate their need for any travel-specific vaccines. In this review we touch on some of the most critical pre-travel vaccines and precautions needed for travelling children.
