Physical therapy interventions for older people with vertigo, dizziness and balance disorders addressing mobility and participation: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Vertigo, dizziness and balance disorders (VDB) are among the most relevant contributors to the burden of disability among older adults living in the community and associated with immobility, limitations of activities of daily living and decreased participation. The aim of this study was to identify the quality of evidence of physical therapy interventions that address mobility and participation in older patients with VDB and to characterize the used primary and secondary outcomes. METHODS: A systematic search via MEDLINE (PubMed), Cochrane Library, CINAHL, PEDro, forward citation

Utility of Volumetric Measurement via Weight-Bearing Computed Tomography Scan to Diagnose Syndesmotic Instability.

BACKGROUND: Weight-bearing computed tomography (WBCT) allows evaluation of the distal syndesmosis under physiologic load. We hypothesized that WBCT volumetric measurement of the distal syndesmosis would be increased on the injured as compared to the contralateral uninjured side and that these 3-dimensional (3D) calculations would be a more sensitive determinant than 2-dimensional (2D) methodology among patients with syndesmotic instability. METHODS: Twelve patients with unilateral syndesmotic instability requiring operative fixation who underwent preoperative bilateral foot and ankle WBCT wer

Phonocardiogram Signal Processing for Automatic Diagnosis of Congenital Heart Disorders through Fusion of Temporal and Cepstral Features.

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is a heart disorder associated with the devastating indications that result in increased mortality, increased morbidity, increased healthcare expenditure, and decreased quality of life. Ventricular Septal Defects (VSDs) and Arterial Septal Defects (ASDs) are the most common types of CHD. CHDs can be controlled before reaching a serious phase with an early diagnosis. The phonocardiogram (PCG) or heart sound auscultation is a simple and non-invasive technique that may reveal obvious variations of different CHDs. Diagnosis based on heart sounds is difficult and requ

Computational comparison of conventional and novel electroconvulsive therapy electrode placements for the treatment of depression.

BACKGROUND: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a highly effective treatment for severe psychiatric disorders. Despite its high efficacy, the use of ECT would be greater if the risk of cognitive side effects were reduced. Over the last 20 years, developments in ECT technique, including improvements in the dosing methodology and modification of the stimulus waveform, have allowed for improved treatment methods with reduced adverse cognitive effects. There is increasing evidence that the electrode placement is important for orienting the electrical stimulus and therefore modifying treatment outco

Image-Based 3D Characterization of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Deformation After Endovascular Aneurysm Repair.

An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a focal dilation of the abdominal aorta, that if not treated, tends to grow and may rupture. The most common treatment for AAAs is the endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR), which requires that patients undergo Computed Tomography Angiography (CTA)-based post-operative lifelong surveillance due to the possible appearance of complications. These complications may again lead to AAA dilation and rupture. However, there is a lack of advanced quantitative image-analysis tools to support the clinicians in the follow-up. Currently, the approach is to evaluate AAA d

CO₂ Laser for the Treatment of Auricle Schwannoma: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Digital health technologies are transforming the way health outcomes are captured and measured. Digital biomarkers may provide more objective measurements than traditional approaches as they encompass continuous and longitudinal data collection and use of automated analysis for data interpretation. In addition, the use of digital health technology allows for home-based disease assessments, which in addition to reducing patient burden from on-site hospital visits, provides a more holistic picture of how the patient feels and functions in the real world. Tools that can robustly capture drug effi

Detection of acute lymphoblastic leukemia using image segmentation and data mining algorithms.

Blood is composed of white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. Segmentation of the blood smear cells and extraction of features of the cells is essential in the field of medicine. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia is a form of blood cancer caused due to the abnormal increase in the production of immature white blood cells in the bone marrow. It mostly affects the children below 5 years and adults above 50 years of age. Due to the late diagnosis and cost of the devices used for the determination, the mortality rate has increased drastically. Flow cytometry technique that performs automated

Anatomic Variability of the Human Orbit.

PURPOSE: Knowledge of the bony orbit and how its volume changes are clinically important in addressing traumatic injuries. Restoration of orbital volume in some patients is critical to achieving successful outcomes after such injuries. In this large cadaveric study, we aimed to assess the average volume, range of bony orbit volumes, degree of volume discrepancy between the right and left orbits, and percentage of skulls with 1- and 1.5-mL orbital volume differences via alginate impressions and volume displacement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study used 121 skulls (242 orbits) from the Univers

High Variability in Neuronal Loss.

Background and Purpose- In the setting of acute ischemic stroke because of large-vessel occlusion (LVO) there is progressive loss of brain tissue which occurs in a time-dependent fashion previously quantified to be ≈1.9 million neurons per minute. However, this number represents an average and accumulating evidence suggests large individual variation. In this study, we aim to quantify the distribution and range in the rate of loss brain tissue across the entire spectrum of clinical phenotypes of anterior circulation LVO strokes encountered in clinical practice. Methods- Retrospective review of

The association between body mass index and the risk of different gastrointestinal cancers: A protocol for an overview of systematic reviews.

BACKGROUND: Changes in our lifestyle over the past few decades have led to a significant increase in the worldwide prevalence of both overweight (defined as a body mass index [BMI]≥25 kg/m) and obesity (BMI≥30 kg/m), thus leading to numerous harmful consequences for an individual's health. Several meta-analyses support the link between obesity and different gastrointestinal cancers, but substantial heterogeneity exists between studies. We will synthesize published systematic reviews to evaluate the association between body mass index (BMI) and the incidence and mortality of different gastroint

Anisotropic composite material phantom to improve skeletal muscle characterization using magnetic resonance elastography.

The presence and progression of neuromuscular pathology, including spasticity, Duchenne's muscular dystrophy and hyperthyroidism, has been correlated with changes in the intrinsic mechanical properties of skeletal muscle tissue. Tools for noninvasively measuring and monitoring these properties, such as Magnetic Resonance Elastography (MRE), could benefit basic research into understanding neuromuscular pathologies, as well as translational research to develop therapies, by providing a means of assessing and tracking their efficacy. Dynamic elastography methods for noninvasive measurement of tis

Impact of Enlarged Nonhypermetabolic Lymph Nodes on Outcomes After Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy for Early-Stage Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Up to 15% of patients undergoing positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) before stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) harbor occult nodal disease. In the absence of invasive mediastinal staging, the clinical significance of enlarged nonhypermetabolic lymph nodes (LNs) remains unclear. We performed what is to our knowledge the first study to address whether enlarged nonhypermetabolic LNs were associated with higher post-SBRT failure rates. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Two academic centers assessed 157 consecutive patients treated with SBRT for cT1-2aN0M0 non-small-cell

Assessment of environmental impacts and operational costs of the implementation of an innovative source-separated urine treatment.

Innovative treatment technologies and management methods are necessary to valorise the constituents of wastewater, in particular nutrients from urine (highly concentrated and can have significant impacts related to artificial fertilizer production). The FP7 project, ValuefromUrine, proposed a new two-step process (called VFU) based on struvite precipitation and microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) to recover ammonia, which is further transformed into ammonium sulphate. The environmental and economic impacts of its prospective implementation in the Netherlands were evaluated based on life cycle as

Cystic Echinococcosis Epidemiology in Spain Based on Hospitalization Records, 1997-2012.

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a parasitic disease caused by the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus. Although present throughout Europe, deficiencies in the official reporting of CE result in under-reporting and misreporting of this disease, which in turn is reflected in the wrong opinion that CE is not an important health problem. By using an alternative data source, this study aimed at describing the clinical and temporal-spatial characteristics of CE hospitalizations in Spain between 1997 and 2012. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We performed a retrospective descriptive study usin

Propensity score-based survival benefit of simultaneous liver-kidney transplant over liver transplant alone for recipients with pretransplant renal dysfunction.

The survival benefit of simultaneous liver-kidney transplantation (SLKT) over liver transplantation alone (LTA) is unclear from the current literature. Additionally, the role of donor kidney quality, measured by the kidney donor risk index (KDRI), in survival benefit of SLKT is not studied. We compared survival benefit after SLKT and LTA among recipients with similar pretransplant renal dysfunction using novel methodology, specifically with respect to survival probability and area under the survival curve by dialysis status and KDRI. Data were obtained from the Scientific Registry of Transplan

Three-dimensional printing of large nasal septal perforations for optimal prosthetic closure.

BACKGROUND: Since 1972, patients with large nasal perforations, who were symptomatic, and who were not candidates for surgery, had the option of custom prosthetic closure at Mayo Clinic. Although septal prostheses have helped many patients, 27% of pre-1982 patients chose not to keep the prosthesis in place. Two-dimensional computed tomography (CT) sizing resulted in more of the patients choosing to retain the prosthesis. The introduction of three-dimensional (3-D) printing to the sizing process offered the potential of further improved retention by refinement in prosthesis fit. OBJECTIVE: To

Targeted Doxorubicin Delivery to Brain Tumors via Minicells: Proof of Principle Using Dogs with Spontaneously Occurring Tumors as a Model.

BACKGROUND: Cytotoxic chemotherapy can be very effective for the treatment of cancer but toxicity on normal tissues often limits patient tolerance and often causes long-term adverse effects. The objective of this study was to assist in the preclinical development of using modified, non-living bacterially-derived minicells to deliver the potent chemotherapeutic doxorubicin via epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) targeting. Specifically, this study sought to evaluate the safety and efficacy of EGFR targeted, doxorubicin loaded minicells (designated EGFRminicellsDox) to deliver doxorubicin to
