Biting behavior and seasonal variation in the abundance of Anopheles minimus species A and C in Thailand.

We measured the seasonal abundance and bloodfeeding behavior of species A and C of the mosquito Anopheles minimus Theobald 1901 in an endemic malarious area of western Thailand. An. minimus s.l. is a major vector of human malarial and filarial parasites in Southeast Asia. Mosquitos were collected once a month for one year using four collection methods: human-baiting indoors, human-baiting outdoors, human-baiting in the forest, and cow-baiting. We found that both species A and C tend to feed from cows rather than humans; we did not find any preference for indoor, outdoor or forest-biting in eit

Features of centipede bites in Taiwan.

In order to define characteristics that would help differentiate a centipede bite from a viper bite, we designed a prospective study using the data collection system of a Poison Control Center. The clinical goal is to rapidly distinguish envenomations for which antitoxin may be indicated (viper) from those for which palliative care only is appropriate (centipede). During a year period, 31 cases, including two cases receiving double bites in each event, were reported. Centipede lengths were estimated to range from 3 to 20 cm. Ninety-two per cent of the bite marks were pointed in shape. A local

Schmallenberg Disease-A Newly Emerged Culicoides-borne Viral Disease of Ruminants.

First appearing in 2011 in Northern Europe, Schmallenberg virus (SBV), an Orthobunyavirus of the Simbu serogroup, is associated with clinical disease mainly in ruminants such as cattle, sheep and goats. The clinical signs are characterized by abortion and congenital deformities in newborns. The virus is transmitted by Culicoides midges of the Obsoletus complex. SBV infection induces a solid protective immunity that persists for at least 4 or 6 years in sheep and cattle, respectively. SBV infection can be diagnosed directly by real-time RT-qPCR and virus isolation or indirectly by serological a

An overview of visceral leishmaniasis elimination program in India: a picture imperfect.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) has been one of the most neglected tropical diseases in India. Concurrent and correct data on the burden of VL is vital to plan, allocate trained resources and to monitor the progress of the elimination program. More emphasis on integrated vector management can help in combating the disease spread. Effective surveillance, active and accurate diagnosis using rK39 strip test and use of an affordable, safe and efficient treatment option like liposomal amphotericin B remain the key components of VL control. Sustained advocacy, information, education and communication ar

A recombinant fusion protein containing a spider toxin specific for the insect voltage-gated sodium ion channel shows oral toxicity towards insects of different orders.

Recombinant fusion protein technology allows specific insecticidal protein and peptide toxins to display activity in orally-delivered biopesticides. The spider venom peptide δ-amaurobitoxin-PI1a, which targets insect voltage-gated sodium channels, was fused to the "carrier" snowdrop lectin (GNA) to confer oral toxicity. The toxin itself (PI1a) and an amaurobitoxin/GNA fusion protein (PI1a/GNA) were produced using the yeast Pichia pastoris as expression host. Although both proteins caused mortality when injected into cabbage moth (Mamestra brassicae) larvae, the PI1a/GNA fusion was approximatel

Can malaria vector control accelerate the interruption of lymphatic filariasis transmission in Africa; capturing a window of opportunity?

BACKGROUND: The Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (GPELF) was launched in 2000, and nearly all endemic countries in the Americas, Eastern Mediterranean and Asia-Pacific regions have now initiated the WHO recommended mass drug administration (MDA) campaign to interrupt transmission of the parasite. However, nearly 50% of the LF endemic countries in Africa are yet to implement the GPELF MDA strategy, which does not include vector control. Nevertheless, the recent scale up in insecticide treated /long lasting nets (ITNs/LLINs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) for malaria contro

Arthritogenic alphaviruses--an overview.

Mosquito-transmitted alphaviruses causing human rheumatic disease are globally distributed and include chikungunya virus, Ross River virus, Barmah Forest virus, Sindbis virus, o'nyong-nyong virus and Mayaro virus. These viruses cause endemic disease and, occasionally, large epidemics; for instance, the 2004-2011 chikungunya epidemic resulted in 1.4-6.5 million cases, with imported cases reported in nearly 40 countries. The disease is usually self-limiting and characterized by acute and chronic symmetrical peripheral polyarthralgia-polyarthritis, with acute disease usually including fever, myal

Investigating mosquito-net coverage in Nigeria. How useful are consumer marketing surveys?

A marketing company conducting a consumer omnibus survey (COS) in April 2000 was paid to include questions about household ownership of mosquito nets. At the time of the survey, which involved 5018 respondents, most and perhaps all of the nets owned by the respondents would have been untreated, as a product for net treatment was then virtually unavailable. Sampling was conducted in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. Core questions were asked about socio-demographic and socio-economic characteristics, and commissioned questions were asked about household net ownership, the

Risk factors for infection during a dengue-1 outbreak in Maui, Hawaii, 2001.

Autochthonous dengue virus transmission, last identified in the state of Hawaii in 1945, was detected again in 2001. A seroepidemiological survey in a high-incidence community (Nahiku) and a nearby low-incidence community (Hana Subdivision) was implemented. The two communities studied differed in median household size (two vs. four persons), median lot size (2.8 vs. 0.8acres), proportion of households with mosquito larvae (81 vs. 28%) and incidence of recent infection (39% [28/72] vs. 1% [1/131]). The average number of reported anti-mosquito actions by residents of both locations remained low,

[Prevention of malaria in the adult].

Great scourge of poor countries, malaria is the most important tropical parasitic disease. It is responsible for a large number of deaths in concerned countries and represents a real danger for travellers going to endemic regions. So, prophylactic measures are essential. On the one hand protective measures against mosquito bites, by wearing covering clothes, by using repellents and bed net (eventually impregnated with insecticide) will be useful. On the other hand, chemoprophylaxis is most often necessary, adapted to the possibility of chloroquine resistant P. falciparum, to the length or cond

The control of mosquito-borne diseases in New York City.

Mosquito control began in New York City in 1901. Large-scale efforts to drain marshlands occurred through the 1930s, and aerial application of pesticide occurred as early as 1956. Components of early mosquito-borne disease control were reimplemented in 1999-2000 in response to an outbreak of West Nile virus, and included promoting public and health professional awareness regarding disease causation and prevention, providing free government laboratory testing, case reporting, mapping of mosquito breeding sites and their elimination or application of larvicide to them, and adult mosquito control

Control of Glossina longipennis (Diptera: Glossinidae) by insecticide-treated targets at Galana ranch, Kenya, and confirmation of the role of G. longipennis as a vector of cattle trypanosomiasis.

Glossina longipennis Corti was studied in Galana Ranch, Kenya over a four year period, in two areas (Tank E and Lali) where the species was abundant and other species were absent or scarce. There was active transmission of trypanosomiasis to cattle in both areas, the parasite species being Trypanosoma vivax Ziemann and T. congolense Broden. Mean infection rates of the G. longipennis were 1.1% and 0. 55% for T. vivax and T. congolense respectively at Tank E, and 0.88% and 0.15% at Lali. Experimental transmission studies showed that cattle in fly-proof enclosures challenged with wild G. longipen

Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in the Americas: a review of their interactions with the human population.

This paper describes the significant changes in the relationship between Aedes aegypti mosquitoes and the human population in the Americas from the 1800s to present. First, the history of the arrival of the mosquito, the consequent epidemics of yellow fever and dengue, and the eventual implication of the mosquito as vector is described. Second, the Pan American Health Organization's Aedes aegypti Eradication Program is discussed and the potential threat to the Americas of development of the dengue hemorrhagic fever/dengue shock syndrome (DHF/DSS) is emphasized. Third, the limited efforts of th

Sleeping sickness and the factors affecting it in Botswana.

From the first appearance of sleeping sickness in Botswana in 1934 outbreaks increased in severity up to 1971. All populated areas around the fly belt were affected. Rates of infection are highest in the hot wet season and males aged between 30 and 50 years most affected. Rates vary considerably between tribes and have greatly increased in one tribe since 1966. Between 5 and 20% of cases die each year. Increase both in area of tsetse fly infestation and in human population size can account for the increase in severity of outbreaks. Timing of outbreaks correlates with years of low rainfall when

MBORS: Mosquito vector Biocontrol Ontology and Recommendation System.

BACKGROUND OBJECTIVES: Mosquito vectors are disease-causing insects, responsible for various life-threatening vector-borne diseases such as dengue, Zika, malaria, chikungunya, and lymphatic filariasis. In practice, synthetic insecticides are used to control the mosquito vector, but, the continuous usage of synthetic insecticides is toxic to human health resulting in communicable diseases. Non-toxic biocontrol agents such as bacteria, fungus, plants, and mosquito densoviruses play a vital role in controlling mosquitoes. Community awareness of mosquito biocontrol agents is required to control ve

Dermal exposure represents a major pathway of chlorpyrifos uptake in insectivorous bats: Insights from a toxicokinetic model.

Bats help to control populations of agricultural pests by eating large amounts of insects; however, foraging in croplands can present a threat to bats through exposure to pesticides via contaminated prey or through their skin and lungs. Although exposure to pesticides is known to occur in bats, it is unclear which routes predominate, and how toxic compounds are distributed among different tissues after being taken up from the environment. A non-invasive approach to evaluating the risk of exposure is the use of toxicokinetic modeling. Here, we developed a physiologically-based toxicokinetic mod
