Anatomical, pathological, and histological features of experimental respiratory infection of birds by biofilm-forming bacteria Staphylococcus aureus.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The pathogenesis of staphylococcal infections is mediated by virulence factors, such as enzymes, toxins, and biofilms, which increase the resistance of microorganisms to host immune system evasion. Testing and searching for standardized multi-level algorithms for the indication and differentiation of biofilms at the early stages of diagnosis will contribute to the development of preventive measures to control the critical points of technology and manage dangerous risk factors for the spread of infectious diseases. This research aimed to study the main stages of Staphylococc

Selection of Pneumatic Reduction in Invagination Treatment and the Factors Affecting the Success of This Method.

Objective To retrospectively evaluate the success rates of fluoroscopy-guided pneumatic reduction in children with intussusception and to determine the risk factors and patient characteristics affecting the success of this method. Materials and methods Retrospective evaluation was made of a total of 183 children diagnosed with ultrasonography (USG) and treated in the pediatric surgery clinic between August 2010 and December 2017. Data related to gender, age (month), date of presentation, invaginated segment localizations and treatment modalities were retrieved from the patient files. In childr

Nutritional characteristics of camelina meal for 3-week-old broiler chickens.

Limited information on nutritional characteristics on camelina meal for broiler chickens limits its use in diets of broiler chickens. The objectives of this study were to determine the ileal digestible energy (IDE), ME, and MEn contents of 2 different camelina meal (CM1 and CM2) samples for 3-wk-old broiler chickens using the regression method and to determine glucosinolate compounds in the camelina meal samples. The CM1 and CM2 were incorporated into a corn-soybean meal-based reference diet at 3 levels (0, 100, or 200 g/kg) by replacing the energy-yielding ingredients. These 5 diets (referenc

Four-triangular-skin-flap approach to umbilical diseases and laparoscopic umbilical port.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Surgery of umbilical pathology requires restoration of a normal umbilical appearance. Also, the umbilicus is used increasingly as the entry site during laparoscopic surgery. However, conventional approaches leave obvious scars. A simple alternative approach that creates a natural-looking umbilicus is described. METHODS: The umbilicus is opened by creating 4 isosceles triangular skin flaps. Closure is by suture of the flap apex only, creating scaring that resembles a natural umbilicus. RESULTS: Between November 1996 and March 2003, this technique was used in 204 children w

Gastrointestinal bleeding in infancy and childhood.

In summary, the causes of GI bleeding in infancy and childhood are varied, ranging from congenital and hereditary disorders to those more commonly seen in the adult population. Many causes of GI bleeding in the pediatric population are restricted to a narrow range regarding age of onset, frequently enabling the physician to narrow the differential diagnosis before proceeding with invasive investigation; however, GI bleeding may involve any portion of the intestinal tract, from mouth to anus, as in adulthood, and many causes common to the adult population also must be considered.

Non-variceal gastrointestinal bleed in children: surgical experience with emphasis on management challenges.

PURPOSE: This exclusively surgical series on pediatric non-variceal gastrointestinal bleed (NVGIB) defines three levels of bleed site and describes etiology, bleed severity, diagnostic algorithm, and surgical management for each bleed site. Management challenges are detailed. METHODS: Patients aged ≤ 18 years treated surgically for NVGIB were analysed. RESULTS: Bleed site (n = 87) was classified as: upper gastrointestinal bleed (UGIB; n = 11); small bowel bleed (SBB: n = 52); and lower GIB (n = 24). Four etiology-based groups were identified: lesions with ectopic gastric mucosa (EGM; n = 33)

Risk factors for surgery in pediatric intussusception in the era of pneumatic reduction.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical treatment is still necessary for intussusception management in a subgroup of patients, despite advances in enema reduction techniques. Early identification of these patients should improve outcomes. METHODS: The medical records of patients treated for intussusception at our institution from 2006 to 2011 were reviewed. Univariate and multivariate analyses, including stepwise logistic regression, were performed. RESULTS: Overall, 379 patients were treated for intussusception, and 101 (26%) patients required operative management, with 34 undergoing intestinal resection. T

Intussusception: ability of fluoroscopic images obtained during air enemas to depict lead points and other abnormalities.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the ability of fluoroscopic images obtained during air enemas to depict or exclude lead points of intussusceptions and other abnormalities that require surgical treatment in the absence of intussusception. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The clinical, radiologic, surgical, and pathologic findings were reviewed in 14 patients with lead points or other lesions. RESULTS: Fluoroscopic images failed to depict a lead point in 10 patients. The air enema easily reduced intussusceptions with benign lead points in seven patients. Fluoroscopic images depicted pathologic lead points in two p

The role of radionuclide studies in pediatric gastrointestinal disorders.

Radionuclide techniques are currently used to fully evaluate many congenital and acquired abnormalities of the gastrointestinal tract of children. Frequently, the anatomic and functional data provided by the nuclear examination are definitive. In the study of many disease entities, tracer techniques have replaced more cumbersome or invasive procedures. Although the radiopharmaceuticals and instrumentation are similar as applied to both children and adults, the uniqueness of children and their disease entities requires special consideration when performing and interpreting their studies. In thi
