Potential diagnostic application of a novel deep learning- based approach for COVID-19.

COVID-19 is a highly communicable respiratory illness caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, which has had a significant impact on global public health and the economy. Detecting COVID-19 patients during a pandemic with limited medical facilities can be challenging, resulting in errors and further complications. Therefore, this study aims to develop deep learning models to facilitate automated diagnosis of COVID-19 from CT scan records of patients. The study also introduced COVID-MAH-CT, a new dataset that contains 4442 CT scan images from 133 COVID-19 patients, as well as 133 CT scan 3D

Heart Rate Imputation Using Accelerometers for Wearable Devices.

Heart rate (HR) estimation from photoplethysmography (PPG) signals is a vital component of many health monitoring systems. However, PPG signals are susceptible to motion artifacts, which can lead to inaccurate HR measurements. Moreover, PPG-based HR estimation often encounters catastrophic failures in the presence of excessive motion artifacts where reliable HR reading from PPG is not possible. In this study, we introduce a novel approach to reducing catastrophic failures by imputing missing HR using tri-axial accelerometer data in consumer-grade smart watches. Our proposed method employs a li

Vascular liver segmentation: a narrative review on methods and new insights brought by artificial intelligence.

Liver vessel segmentation from routinely performed medical imaging is a useful tool for diagnosis, treatment planning and delivery, and prognosis evaluation for many diseases, particularly liver cancer. A precise representation of liver anatomy is crucial to define the extent of the disease and, when suitable, the consequent resective or ablative procedure, in order to guarantee a radical treatment without sacrificing an excessive volume of healthy liver. Once mainly performed manually, with notable cost in terms of time and human energies, vessel segmentation is currently realized through the

Causality-Enhanced Multiple Instance Learning With Graph Convolutional Networks for Parkinsonian Freezing-of-Gait Assessment.

Freezing of gait (FoG) is a common disabling symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD). It is clinically characterized by sudden and transient walking interruptions for specific human body parts, and it presents the localization in time and space. Due to the difficulty in extracting global fine-grained features from lengthy videos, developing an automated five-point FoG scoring system is quite challenging. Therefore, we propose a novel video-based automated five-classification FoG assessment method with a causality-enhanced multiple-instance-learning graph convolutional network (GCN). This method in

Involution Transformer Based U-Net for Landmark Detection in Ultrasound Images for Diagnosis of Infantile DDH.

The B-mode ultrasound based computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) has demonstrated its effectiveness for diagnosis of Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH) in infants, which can conduct the Graf's method by detecting landmarks in hip ultrasound images. However, it is still necessary to explore more valuable information around these landmarks to enhance feature representation for improving detection performance in the detection model. To this end, a novel Involution Transformer based U-Net (IT-UNet) network is proposed for hip landmark detection. The IT-UNet integrates the efficient involution oper

Prior-Guided Adversarial Learning With Hypergraph for Predicting Abnormal Connections in Alzheimer's Disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by alterations of the brain's structural and functional connectivity during its progressive degenerative processes. Existing auxiliary diagnostic methods have accomplished the classification task, but few of them can accurately evaluate the changing characteristics of brain connectivity. In this work, a prior-guided adversarial learning with hypergraph (PALH) model is proposed to predict abnormal brain connections using triple-modality medical images. Concretely, a prior distribution from anatomical knowledge is estimated to guide multimodal representa

Machine Learning Algorithms for Processing and Classifying Unsegmented Phonocardiographic Signals: An Efficient Edge Computing Solution Suitable for Wearable Devices.

The phonocardiogram (PCG) can be used as an affordable way to monitor heart conditions. This study proposes the training and testing of several classifiers based on SVMs (support vector machines), k-NN (k-Nearest Neighbor), and NNs (neural networks) to perform binary ("Normal"/"Pathologic") and multiclass ("Normal", "CAD" (coronary artery disease), "MVP" (mitral valve prolapse), and "Benign" (benign murmurs)) classification of PCG signals, without heart sound segmentation algorithms. Two datasets of 482 and 826 PCG signals from the Physionet/CinC 2016 dataset are used to train the binary and m

An improved approach for automated cervical cell segmentation with PointRend.

Regular screening for cervical cancer is one of the best tools to reduce cancer incidence. Automated cell segmentation in screening is an essential task because it can present better understanding of the characteristics of cervical cells. The main challenge of cell cytoplasm segmentation is that many boundaries in cell clumps are extremely difficult to be identified. This paper proposes a new convolutional neural network based on Mask RCNN and PointRend module, to segment overlapping cervical cells. The PointRend head concatenates fine grained features and coarse features extracted from differ

Real-Time Patient-Specific ECG Classification by 1D Self-Operational Neural Networks.

OBJECTIVE: Despitethe proliferation of numerous deep learning methods proposed for generic ECG classification and arrhythmia detection, compact systems with the real-time ability and high accuracy for classifying patient-specific ECG are still few. Particularly, the scarcity of patient-specific data poses an ultimate challenge to any classifier. Recently, compact 1D Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have achieved the state-of-the-art performance level for the accurate classification of ventricular and supraventricular ectopic beats. However, several studies have demonstrated the fact that t

Two-dimensional ECG-based cardiac arrhythmia classification using DSE-ResNet.

Electrocardiogram (ECG) is mostly used for the clinical diagnosis of cardiac arrhythmia due to its simplicity, non-invasiveness, and reliability. Recently, many models based on the deep neural networks have been applied to the automatic classification of cardiac arrhythmia with great success. However, most models independently extract the internal features of each lead in the 12-lead ECG during the training phase, resulting in a lack of inter-lead features. Here, we propose a general model based on the two-dimensional ECG and ResNet with detached squeeze-and-excitation modules (DSE-ResNet) to

COVID-DSNet: A novel deep convolutional neural network for detection of coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) cases from CT and Chest X-Ray images.

COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2), which causes acute respiratory syndrome, is a contagious and deadly disease that has devastating effects on society and human life. COVID-19 can cause serious complications, especially in patients with pre-existing chronic health problems such as diabetes, hypertension, lung cancer, weakened immune systems, and the elderly. The most critical step in the fight against COVID-19 is the rapid diagnosis of infected patients. Computed Tomography (CT), chest X-ray (CXR), and RT-PCR diagnostic kits are frequently used to diagnose the disease. However, due to difficulties such as

Automatic segmentation and location learning of neonatal cerebral ventricles in 3D ultrasound data combining CNN and CPPN.

Preterm neonates are highly likely to suffer from ventriculomegaly, a dilation of the Cerebral Ventricular System (CVS). This condition can develop into life-threatening hydrocephalus and is correlated with future neuro-developmental impairments. Consequently, it must be detected and monitored by physicians. In clinical routing, manual 2D measurements are performed on 2D ultrasound (US) images to estimate the CVS volume but this practice is imprecise due to the unavailability of 3D information. A way to tackle this problem would be to develop automatic CVS segmentation algorithms for 3D US dat

A calibrated deep learning ensemble for abnormality detection in musculoskeletal radiographs.

Musculoskeletal disorders affect the locomotor system and are the leading contributor to disability worldwide. Patients suffer chronic pain and limitations in mobility, dexterity, and functional ability. Musculoskeletal (bone) X-ray is an essential tool in diagnosing the abnormalities. In recent years, deep learning algorithms have increasingly been applied in musculoskeletal radiology and have produced remarkable results. In our study, we introduce a new calibrated ensemble of deep learners for the task of identifying abnormal musculoskeletal radiographs. Our model leverages the strengths of

Characteristics of sequential activity in networks with temporally asymmetric Hebbian learning.

Sequential activity has been observed in multiple neuronal circuits across species, neural structures, and behaviors. It has been hypothesized that sequences could arise from learning processes. However, it is still unclear whether biologically plausible synaptic plasticity rules can organize neuronal activity to form sequences whose statistics match experimental observations. Here, we investigate temporally asymmetric Hebbian rules in sparsely connected recurrent rate networks and develop a theory of the transient sequential activity observed after learning. These rules transform a sequence o

Estimating 3-dimensional liver motion using deep learning and 2-dimensional ultrasound images.

PURPOSE: The main purpose of this study is to construct a system to track the tumor position during radiofrequency ablation (RFA) treatment. Existing tumor tracking systems are designed to track a tumor in a two-dimensional (2D) ultrasound (US) image. As a result, the three-dimensional (3D) motion of the organs cannot be accommodated and the ablation area may be lost. In this study, we propose a method for estimating the 3D movement of the liver as a preliminary system for tumor tracking. Additionally, in current 3D movement estimation systems, the motion of different structures during RFA cou

Automatic choroidal segmentation in OCT images using supervised deep learning methods.

The analysis of the choroid in the eye is crucial for our understanding of a range of ocular diseases and physiological processes. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging provides the ability to capture highly detailed cross-sectional images of the choroid yet only a very limited number of commercial OCT instruments provide methods for automatic segmentation of choroidal tissue. Manual annotation of the choroidal boundaries is often performed but this is impractical due to the lengthy time taken to analyse large volumes of images. Therefore, there is a pressing need for reliable and accurat
