From optical gain to lasing with colloidal nanocrystals.

Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) are widely explored as optical gain materials, and throughout over 20 years of research their performance is evaluated through transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) using parameters such as gain magnitude, lifetime, and threshold. In this work, we discuss some of the literature values reported and couple that to different gain mechanisms. Next, we take a closer look at how these actually relate to the physical parameters that govern lasing, as described by the semiconductor laser rate equations, and found some discrepancy with what is usually report

Light activated room temperature NO2 sensing in Au nanoisland/Cs3Bi2I9 heterojunctions.

Light-assisted gas sensing has emerged as a compelling strategy for enhancing sensor performance while eliminating the elevated operating temperatures required by conventional gas sensors. Here, we report a hybrid Au nanoisland (Au NI)/Cs3Bi2I9 heterojunction for selective room-temperature NO2 detection under optical excitation. Semi-embedded Au NIs promote the growth of vertically oriented, petal-like Cs3Bi2I9 structures, thereby increasing the accessible surface area and the density of adsorption-active sites. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy resolves a sharp crystalline inte

Magnetically Reconfigurable Mode Strong Coupling Toward Tunable Nanophotonic Sensing Devices.

Dynamic sensing is an important goal in nanophotonics, yet many tunable sensing platforms still rely on structural reconfiguration or material-property switching, which can limit operational stability, integration simplicity, and real-time controllability. Here, we present a magneto-optical metasurface that enables tunable strong coupling for reconfigurable refractive-index sensing through noncontact magnetic-field control without altering the device geometry. The system supports strong coupling between a structural quasi-bound state in the continuum (q-BIC) induced by symmetry breaking and a

Iatrogenic coronary artery dissection: detection, management, and prevention.

Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) has become a cornerstone treatment for symptomatic coronary artery disease. Although generally safe and effective, PCI may still lead to serious complications such as coronary artery dissection or vessel perforation. Coronary artery dissection can arise spontaneously or be triggered by catheter-based procedures, the latter referred to as iatrogenic coronary artery dissection (ICAD). ICAD, while uncommon, carries significant procedural and prognostic implications; catheter-induced ostial dissection has been reported in approximately 0.09% of coronary ang

Designable van der Waals Crystal for Artificial Neuronal Cell Mimicking.

Optogenetics employs light to regulate neuronal activity with exceptional spatiotemporal precision, thereby enabling the direct modulation of learning and memory processes in the human brain. This capability to externally control neuronal signaling via optical stimuli has provided profound insights into brain function and established a versatile strategy for engineering bio-inspired information processing. Herein, a designable van der Waals (vdW) crystal has been demonstrated for device-scale neuronal cell mimicking. The structural similarity between ion-channel in biological membranes and lay

Macrocycle-mediated supramolecular regulation of signal transduction in nanoscale biosensors.

This Feature Article reviews macrocycle-mediated signal transduction in nanoscale biosensors from the perspective of recognition-induced physicochemical perturbations. Signal transduction in nanoscale biosensors is traditionally categorized according to device architectures or signal outputs, including electrochemical, optical, plasmonic, and field-effect platforms. While effective from an engineering perspective, such classifications often obscure the common molecular events that ultimately govern sensing responses. Here, we propose a unified supramolecular framework that connects macrocycle-

Room-Temperature Tuning and Probing of Fermi Polarons in Atomically Thin Semiconductors on a Plasmonic Metasurface.

The Fermi polaron, arising from interactions between a mobile impurity and a degenerate Fermi sea, is a many-body quasiparticle that provides a sensitive probe of strongly correlated electronic phases in atomically thin semiconductors. In doped transition-metal dichalcogenides, the attractive and repulsive polaron branches are well established in monolayers. However, extending active control and quantitative, branch-resolved probing to stacked geometries has remained elusive because spectral quenching and weak optical contrast restrict access to Fermi polaron signatures. Here, we integrate ele

Development of Optical-Guiding Scintillators with Ultrafine (~12 μm) Uniform Scintillator Cores for High-Resolution X-Ray Imaging.

We report the development of bundled optical-guiding crystal scintillators (OCSs) with ultrafine and uniform scintillator cores (~12 μm) for high-resolution X-ray imaging. Conventional OCS fabrication using iodide scintillators often suffers from iodine volatilization, bubble formation, and core discontinuities, which limit structural uniformity and device reliability. To address these limitations, a hollow-fiber-based fabrication strategy was introduced. Hollow glass fibers were first bundled and drawn without scintillator materials, followed by capillary infiltration of a Tl-doped Cs3Cu2I5 (

Imaging of a van der Waals spin-orbit torque system using spin ensembles in hBN.

Recently, optically active spin defects embedded in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) crystals have emerged as a transformative quantum sensing platform to explore cutting-edge materials science. Taking advantage of excellent solid-state integrability, this new class of spin defects can be readily arranged in nanoscale proximity to target materials, showing great promise for realizing in-situ quantum sensing of microscopic spin and charge behaviors in vdW heterostructures. Here we report hexagonal boron nitride-based quantum imaging of field-free deterministic magnetic switching and ele

Visualization and detection of ciliary beating frequency in human airway organoids based on image correlated methods for drug screening.

Respiratory ciliary motion is critical for airway hygiene, as its directional beating clears pathogens and debris. Dysfunctional cilia lead to mucus buildup, infections, and worsened respiratory diseases. However, studying ciliary dynamics remains challenging due to technical limitations in imaging and analysis. To address this, human airway organoids expressing specific biomarkers were cultured, and ciliary motility was captured using a charge-coupled device camera. Wavelet transform-based image processing reduced background noise and enhanced cilia contours, enabling color visualization and

A Versatile Technique for Measuring the Stiffness of Small Organisms Based on Microscopic Observation of Cantilever Strain.

Small organisms such as water fleas and nematodes change their body stiffness in response to external stimuli and environmental alterations. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is commonly used for stiffness measurement. However, the compression of the object by the cantilever is performed in the same direction as the observation, and this makes it difficult to observe the deformation of the object. Furthermore, the placement of the cantilever relative to the object is spatially quite limited and the driving distance is also very short: these limitations complicate measurements in organisms of vario

Nanostructured zinc-coordination supraparticles on cellulose fibers: A 3D-Printed μ-FAD integrated smartphone platform for multiplexed salivary metabolic monitoring.

Existing multiplexed salivary diagnostics struggle to achieve a delicate balance between high sensitivity, low cost, and portability. This balance is essential for practical at-home diabetes monitoring. To address this challenge, we developed an integrated smartphone-based 3D paper sensor for multiplexed salivary metabolic monitoring featuring in situ-formed supraparticle zinc-coordination assemblies (SP-ZnCA) on wax-printed microzones. This design combines ratiometric fluorescence-using a DABSA probe with large Stokes shift and a multi-enzyme cascade (glucose oxidase, uricase, and cholesterol

Compression bioreactor for cultured meat.

Cultured meat is emerging as a sustainable and ethical alternative source of dietary protein. However, the commercial viability of cultured meat is fundamentally constrained by prolonged tissue maturation timelines and the high energy demands of conventional, motor-driven electronic bioreactors. To address these bottlenecks, this study introduces a novel, scalable, magnetic-valve controlled pneumatic compression bioreactor, which utilizes a mechanically tunable magnetic circuit to deliver precise cyclic compression without internal electronic sensors or digital feedback loops. We evaluated the

CMOS-MEMS Z-Axis Magnetic Field Sensor with an Additional Collector.

A complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS)-compatible z-axis magnetic field sensor incorporating an additional collector is proposed to enhance magnetic sensing performance. The sensor consists of four identical magnetic sensing elements arranged in a cross-shaped configuration, while shallow trench isolation (STI) and a post-CMOS cavity structure are employed to suppress substrate leakage current and improve electrical isolation. The sensing characteristics were investigated using three-dimensional TCAD simulations to analyze carrier transport and current density distributions under dif

Tunable interlayer coupling in MXY (M = Mo, W; (X/Y) = S, Se, Te) tri-layered van der Waals heterostructures.

Using first principles calculations, we investigated the electronic band structure and optical spectra of Janus MXY (M = Mo, W; X/Y = S, Se, Te) tri-layered van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs). The binding energies, phonon spectra and mechanical properties were calculated and AIMD simulations performed, which confirm the stabilities of these tri-layered vdWHs. The electronic band structures, calculated using the PBE and HSE06 functionals, indicate that MoSSe-WSSe-MoSSe, WSSe-MoSSe-WSSe, MoSeTe-WSeTe-MoSeTe and WSeTe-MoSeTe-WSeTe vdWHs are Γ-K indirect bandgap semiconductors, arising not onl

Optical coherence tomography-guided orbital atherectomy for calcified coronary lesions: rationale and design of the CROWN study.

BACKGROUND: The Orbital Atherectomy System (OAS) has demonstrated high procedural success, with excellent stent deliverability and low complication rates. The effects of orbital atherectomy (OA) and its impact on calcified coronary plaques are not yet fully understood, highlighting the need for a larger and more comprehensive study. OBJECTIVE: Calcium Reduction by Orbital Atherectomy in Western Europe (CROWN) is an ongoing study that aims to evaluate the effects of OA in treating de novo, severely calcified coronary lesions before stent placement using optical coherence tomography (OCT), and

Multimodal Feedback for Handheld Tool Guidance: Combining Wrist-Based Haptics with Augmented Reality.

We investigate how vibrotactile wrist feedback can enhance spatial guidance for handheld tool movement in optical see-through augmented reality (AR). While AR overlays are widely used to support surgical tasks, visual occlusion, lighting conditions, and interface ambiguity can compromise precision and confidence. To address these challenges, we designed a multimodal system combining AR visuals with a custom wrist-worn haptic device delivering directional and state-based cues. A formative study with experienced surgeons and residents identified key tool maneuvers and preferences for reference m

A novel robot-assisted flexible ureteroscope system(RAFUS): design, learning curve, ergonomics, and preclinical feasibility.

Traditional manual flexible ureteroscopy imposes a steep learning curve and severe ergonomic burdens. Furthermore, many existing robotic systems lack integrated optical fiber manipulation. To overcome these limitations, this paper presents the design and evaluation of a novel RAFUS that achieves precise control over four key degrees of freedom, including automated laser fiber delivery, via a miniaturized operating handle. For systematic evaluation via an integrated experimental platform, learning curve analysis was conducted, and a novel mean amplitude spectral density (MASD) metric was combin

Non-invasive ICP monitoring when invasive systems are available in the care of acute brain injured patients: a clinical approach.

Invasive intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring is considered the gold standard for the management of patients with an acute brain injury and at risk of developing intracranial hypertension (IH). However, invasive devices (e.g., intraparenchymal probe or external ventricular drain) are expensive, not available worldwide, and might be associated with some risks. Recently, a consensus for the monitoring and management of traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients when invasive ICP is not available (B-ICONIC) was developed. This approach is based on repeated neurological evaluation, neuroimaging, and
