[Parotid dysfunction after various methods of radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the radiation induced parotid dysfunction in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients who had received different methods of radiotherapy. METHODS: From January 1996 to January 2000, 380 NPC patients were divided into conventional fraction (CF-175 patients), late-course accelerated hyperfractionation (LCAF-63 patients) and intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT-142 patients) groups. Conventional radiotherapy was given with a total dose of 70 Gy. Patients in the LCAF group were treated with the same fractionation as CF group until the dose of 36 - 40 Gy, then followed

Fine-needle aspiration cytology of lymphangioma of the parotid gland in an adult.

Lymphangioma or cystic hygroma is an uncommon benign congenital tumor of lymphatics that is seen in children and, rarely, adults. Lymphangioma primarily involving the parotid gland is an extremely uncommon occurrence in adults. We report on the cytologic findings of a parotid lymphangioma in a 34-yr-old man which showed 13 cc of yellow fluid with red blood cells, lymphocytes, and rare fragments of benign-appearing salivary gland epithelium. The differential diagnosis of cystic parotid gland lesions in adults may include Warthin's tumor, lymphoma, benign lymphoepithelial lesions, branchial clef

[Clinical study of bilateral parotid tumors].

We studied retrospectively 212 patients with parotid tumors who were treated in our hospital between October 1981 and March 1998. One hundred seventy-two of the tumors were benign, and 40 of them were malignant. The tumors were bilateral in 13 patients. Since 1992, we have treated at least 1 bilateral parotid tumor patient per year, and the number of patients with bilateral parotid tumors has tended to increase. Histologically, adenolymphomas occurred in 11 patients, and there was one occurrence of pleomorphic adenoma and one occurrence of basal cell adenoma. Eighty-five percent of all bilater

Lipoxygenase products in human saliva: patients with oral cancer compared to controls.

Lipoxygenase products were quantified in human mixed saliva and in saliva fractions obtained from a parotid or submandibular gland using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and stable isotope dilution. In glandular saliva, only linoleic acid was detected at levels of 20-30 ng/ml. In contrast, mixed saliva showed a linoleic acid concentration of around 300 ng/ml, arachidonic acid levels of around 30 ng/ml, hydroxyoctadecadienoic acid (HODE) levels between 5 and 10 ng/ml, and hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (HETE) levels up to 25 ng/ml. By far the most abundant HETE was 12-HETE, and incubation exp

The cytology of pediatric masses: a differential diagnostic approach.

In the United States, fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) and other cytodiagnostic methods have been underutilized in the evaluation of masses in the pediatric age group. Cytopathologists and cytotechnologists are therefore relatively unfamiliar with the cellular features of lesions that occur in children. On the basis of the cytologic findings from 64 pediatric cases, including 56 FNABs and 8 intra-operative imprints, a differential diagnostic approach to lesions in this age group is presented. The majority of cases can be placed into 1 of 5 cytomorphologic categories: (1) round-cell pattern

Aberrations of chromosome 8 in mixed salivary gland tumors--cytogenetic findings on seven cases.

Cytogenetic findings on seven mixed salivary gland tumors are reported herein. The involvement of chromosome #8 in clonal chromosome aberrations in five of the seven tumors was particularly noteworthy. Four tumors had translocations involving chromosome #8 and one or two other chromosomes (#3, #7, #9, #13). The fifth showed a deletion of parts of the long arm of chromosome #8. In an attempt to define the critical segment on chromosome #8, we have identified the part between 8q11 and 8q13 as the critical region involved in all rearrangements. Thus far, our results confirm the results of the Swe

Chimeric Vastus Lateralis and Anterolateral Thigh Flap for Restoring Facial Defects and Dynamic Function following Radical Parotidectomy.

BACKGROUND: Extirpation of malignant tumors of the parotid results in creation of a complex facial defect often in combination with facial nerve palsy. This study presents the authors' experience using vastus lateralis muscle as a chimeric flap with anterolateral thigh flap to allow both soft-tissue reconstruction and dynamic reanimation in radical parotidectomy. METHODS: A retrospective review of the medical records of cancer patients who had undergone radical parotidectomy and reconstruction using a chimeric vastus lateralis and anterolateral thigh flap between March of 2013 and May of 2017

Radical radiotherapy for treatment of malignant parotid tumours: a single centre experience 1995-2005.

Radiotherapy is commonly used to reduce the risk of recurrence of malignant parotid gland tumours. We report our experience with radiotherapy for parotid malignancies at the Royal Marsden Hospital. We retrospectively reviewed the case notes of 90 patients with malignant parotid tumours who were treated with megavoltage irradiation between 1995 and 2005 at the Royal Marsden Hospital, and obtained details about age, sex, pathology, type of operation, type of radiotherapy, and outcome. Outcome data included date of recurrence, whether local or metastatic, date of death, and cause of death. Outcom

Conversion Surgery After Administration of a TRK Inhibitor for Unresectable Parotid Gland Secretory Carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: The NTRK fusion gene is detected in most salivary gland secretory carcinomas. While tropomyosin receptor kinase (TRK) inhibitors are used for various solid tumors with the fusion gene, there are no reports regarding TRK inhibitor use for unresectable parotid gland carcinomas that subsequently shrink and become resectable. Here, we report a case of salivary gland secretory carcinoma in which conversion surgery was performed after TRK inhibitor use. METHODS: The patient was a 33-year-old man with a left parotid gland tumor. Examinations revealed a tumor invading the poststyloid comp

Evaluation of Major Salivary Gland Involvement in Patients Receiving Radioactive Iodine Treatment for Differentiated Thyroid Cancers Using Advanced Sonographic Techniques.

BACKGROUND: Differentiated thyroid cancers (DTC) are common endocrine malignancies. Radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy is used for the ablation of residual tissue following thyroidectomy. Side effects such as dysphagia, xerostomia, and sialadenitis may occur. In this study, we aimed to identify differences in the parotid and submandibular glands between healthy individuals and patients with DTC who underwent RAI therapy, using both shear wave elastography and ultra-micro angiography. METHODS: A total of 52 DTC patients who had undergone RAI therapy and 60 healthy controls were included in the s

Machine Learning Differentiates Between Benign and Malignant Parotid Tumors With Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound Features.

BACKGROUND: Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is frequently used to distinguish benign parotid tumors (BPTs) from malignant parotid tumors (MPTs). Introducing machine learning may enable clinicians to preoperatively diagnose parotid tumors precisely. PURPOSE: We aimed to estimate the diagnostic capability of machine learning in differentiating BPTs from MPTs. STUDY DESIGN, SETTING, AND SAMPLE: A retrospective cohort study was conducted at the Third Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University. Patients who underwent parotidectomy and CEUS for untreated parotid tumors were included. Patients w

Potential predictive value of IVIM MR for xerostomia in nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Xerostomia, caused by radiation-induced parotid damage, is the most commonly reported radiotherapy (RT) complication for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the value of intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) MR in monitoring radiation-induced parotid gland damage and predicting the risk of xerostomia. METHODS: Fifty-four NPC patients were enrolled and underwent at least three IVIM MR scans: before (pre-RT), after 5 fractions of (5th-RT), halfway through (mid-RT), and after RT (post-RT). The degree of xerostomia patients was assessed

Comparison of Peptidomes Extracted from Healthy Tissue and Tumor Tissue of the Parotid Glands and Saliva Samples.

Salivary gland tumors are highly variable in clinical presentation and histology. The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies 22 types of malignant and 11 types of benign tumors of the salivary glands. Diagnosis of salivary gland tumors is based on imaging (ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging) and fine-needle aspiration biopsy, but the final diagnosis is based on histopathological examination of the removed tumor tissue. In this pilot study, we are testing a new approach to identifying peptide biomarkers in saliva that can be used to diagnose salivary gland tumors. The research material

Fatal Necrotizing Fasciitis Mediated by Escherichia coli After Parotidectomy and Neck Dissection: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Necrotizing soft tissue infection (NSTI) is a rare, but life-threatening, complication of head and neck surgery. We present a 70-year-old male with a history of immunosuppression who presented with polymicrobial NSTI following parotidectomy and neck dissection for cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma. The objective of this report was to promote awareness for NSTI following parotidectomy and selective neck dissection and highlight the management measures that can optimize survival outcomes. We performed a database search that identified 1,025 citations, of which 5 articles described classified as

Ultrasound-guided ethanol sclerotherapy for non-surgical treatment of Warthin's tumor.

BACKGROUND: Currently, the first line treatment for Warthin's tumor (WT) is parotidectomy. There is a paucity of data evaluating the safety and efficacy of non-surgical treatments for patients not amenable to surgery. Ultrasound guided ethanol sclerotherapy (UGES) has been successfully used for the management of lymphangiomans of the head and neck, thyroid nodules, and thyroid cysts. This is the first study to implement and assess the success of UGES for management of WT. METHODS: We report two patients with WT, with a total of 3 masses, who underwent UGES.
