Three-dimensional surface models of autopsied human brains constructed from multiple photographs by photogrammetry.

Virtual three-dimensional (3D) surface models of autopsied human brain hemispheres were constructed by integrating multiple two-dimensional (2D) photographs. To avoid gravity-dependent deformity, formalin-fixed hemispheres were placed on non-refractile, transparent acrylic plates, which allowed us to take 2D photographs from various different angles. Photogrammetric calculations using software (ReCap Pro cloud service, Autodesk, San Rafael, CA, USA) allowed us calculate the 3D surface of each brain hemisphere. Virtual brain models could be moved and rotated freely to allow smooth, seamless vie

Molecular differences in Alzheimer's disease between male and female patients determined by integrative network analysis.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a complex neurodegenerative disease and the most common cause of dementia among the elderly. There has been increasing recognition of sex differences in AD prevalence, clinical manifestation, disease course and prognosis. However, there have been few studies on the molecular mechanism underlying these differences. To address this issue, we carried out global gene expression and integrative network analyses based on expression profiles (GSE84422) across 17 cortical regions of 125 individuals with AD. There were few genes that were differentially expressed across the

Convergent BOLD and Beta-Band Activity in Superior Temporal Sulcus and Frontolimbic Circuitry Underpins Human Emotion Cognition.

The processing of social information in the human brain is widely distributed neuroanatomically and finely orchestrated over time. However, a detailed account of the spatiotemporal organization of these key neural underpinnings of human social cognition remains to be elucidated. Here, we applied functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) in the same participants to investigate spatial and temporal neural patterns evoked by viewing videos of facial muscle configurations. We show that observing the emergence of expressions elicits sustained blood oxygenation le

Does it look painful or disgusting? Ask your parietal and cingulate cortex.

Looking at still images of body parts in situations that are likely to cause pain has been shown to be associated with activation in some brain areas involved in pain processing. Because pain involves both sensory components and negative affect, it is of interest to explore whether the visually evoked representations of pain and of other negative emotions overlap. By means of event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging, here we compare the brain areas recruited, in female volunteers, by the observation of painful, disgusting, or neutral stimuli delivered to one hand or foot. A Practical Diagnostic Approach to Pediatric Episodic Vestibular Syndrome.

Pediatric episodic vestibular syndrome (pEVS) is a frequent source of diagnostic uncertainty because recurrent vertigo, dizziness, and unsteadiness in children may arise from disorders with markedly different mechanisms, prognostic implications, and management pathways. Symptom descriptions are often imprecise, interictal examination may be normal, and similar recurrent attack patterns may reflect spontaneous, triggered, neurologic, autonomic, audiovestibular, or extravestibular conditions. This Perspective proposes a clinician-oriented, phenotype-first framework for the practical evaluation o

Dengue fever case report: a red flag for retinal vein occlusion.

BACKGROUND: Dengue is a prevalent arboviral infection in which ocular disease ranges from maculopathy and hemorrhage to vasculitis and retinal vascular occlusions, appearing during the acute phase or weeks later. Retinal vein and artery occlusions after dengue are uncommon but have been described in case reports and small series. Proposed mechanisms include thrombocytopenia with bleeding tendency, capillary leakage, and immune-mediated inflammation. The true frequency, risk factors, and patterns of bilateral or asymmetric ischemic involvement remain uncertain. We report serology confirmed mild

Mapping the global landscape of wearable devices in healthcare: A dual-database bibliometric analysis (2016-2026).

BACKGROUND: The escalating demand for proactive, personalized healthcare, heavily driven by the rising global burden of chronic diseases, necessitates a shift in modern medical management. While wearable devices are central to this transition, a comprehensive, multi-source quantitative mapping of the field's evolutionary trajectory and application domains remains lacking. OBJECTIVE: This study systematically visualizes the knowledge structure, spatiotemporal distribution, and developmental trends of wearable healthcare technology over the past decade. METHODS: A bibliometric analysis was con

Respiratory Disease Classification Using NMF-Enhanced Log-Mel Spectrograms and Convolutional Recurrent Neural Networks.

Respiratory disease classification using lung sound recordings remains challenging due to signal interference, heterogeneous acquisition conditions, and substantial overlap among clinically related acoustic patterns. This study presents a framework for respiratory disease classification using NMF-enhanced log-mel spectrograms and deep neural classifiers. Respiratory sound recordings from two publicly available datasets were harmonized into a unified label space comprising Asthma, Bronchiectasis, Bronchiolitis, COPD, Healthy, Pneumonia and URTI. Following signal standardization and fixed-length

A Review of the Clinical Presentation, Causes, and Diagnostic Evaluation of Increased Intracranial Pressure in the Emergency Department.

Increased intracranial pressure (ICP) is encountered in numerous traumatic and non-traumatic medical situations, and it requires immediate recognition and attention. Clinically, ICP typically presents with a headache that is most severe in the morning, aggravated by Valsalva-like maneuvers, and associated with nausea or vomiting. Papilledema is a well-recognized sign of increased ICP; however, emergency physicians often find it difficult to visualize the optic disc using ophthalmoscopy or to accurately interpret digital fundus photographs when using a non-mydriatic retinal camera. Desorption Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry Imaging Illustrates the Quality Characters of Isatidis Radix.

For a long history, herbal medicines have made significant contributions to human health all around the world. However, the exploration of an effective approach to illustrate their inner quality remains a challenge. So, it is imperative to develop new methods and technologies to characterize and identify quality markers of herbal medicines. Taking Isatidis Radix, the dried root of Isatis indigotica as an example, desorption electrospray ionization (DESI), in combination with quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (Q-TOF/MS), was applied in this work for the first time to reveal the compre

Acute pain intensity monitoring with the classification of multiple physiological parameters.

Current acute pain intensity assessment tools are mainly based on self-reporting by patients, which is impractical for non-communicative, sedated or critically ill patients. In previous studies, various physiological signals have been observed qualitatively as a potential pain intensity index. On the basis of that, this study aims at developing a continuous pain monitoring method with the classification of multiple physiological parameters. Heart rate (HR), breath rate (BR), galvanic skin response (GSR) and facial surface electromyogram were collected from 30 healthy volunteers under thermal a

An automated approach to enhance the thermographic evaluation on orofacial regions in lateral facial thermograms.

Segmentation of characteristic facial regions has often been an initial step of thermographic analysis in face recognition and clinical diagnosis. Moreover, fast and accurate thermographic analysis on characteristic areas is highly reliant on segmentation approach. Usually, frontal and lateral projections are used to capture the facial thermograms. The significant role of lateral facial thermography to diagnose the various problems associated with orofacial regions has been remarkable in many studies. So far, no study has presented an automatic approach for the segmentation of characteristic a

Spectrum of PEX1 and PEX6 variants in Heimler syndrome.

Heimler syndrome (HS) consists of recessively inherited sensorineural hearing loss, amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) and nail abnormalities, with or without visual defects. Recently HS was shown to result from hypomorphic mutations in PEX1 or PEX6, both previously implicated in Zellweger Syndrome Spectrum Disorders (ZSSD). ZSSD are a group of conditions consisting of craniofacial and neurological abnormalities, sensory defects and multi-organ dysfunction. The finding of HS-causing mutations in PEX1 and PEX6 shows that HS represents the mild end of the ZSSD spectrum, though these conditions were pr

The cortical neuroanatomy of neuropsychological deficits in mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease: a surface-based morphometric analysis.

Patients with probable Alzheimer's disease (AD) and the amnesic form of mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) often demonstrate several types of neuropsychological deficits. These deficits are often related to cortical atrophy, induced by neuronal degradation. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether different anatomic patterns of cortical atrophy are associated with specific neuropsychological deficits. The participants were 170 patients with AD and 99 patients with aMCI. All participants underwent the Seoul Neuropsychological Screening Battery (SNSB), which includes tests that assess a

Acute injuries of the distal radioulnar joint.

Distal radioulnar joint injuries can occur in isolation or in association with distal radius fractures, Galeazzi fractures, Essex-Lopresti injuries, and both-bone forearm fractures. The authors have classified DRUJ/TFCC injuries into stable, partially unstable (subluxation), and unstable (dislocation) patterns based on the injured structures and clinical findings. Clinical findings and plain radiographs are usually sufficient to diagnose the lesion, but axial CT scans are pathognomonic. Diagnostic arthroscopy is the next test of choice to visualize stable and partially unstable lesions. Stable

Defective recognition and naming of famous people from voice in patients with unilateral temporal lobe tumours.

Twenty-nine patients who underwent surgery for a temporal glioma, either in the left (16 patients) or right (13 patients) hemisphere, were administered standardized tests of unknown voice discrimination (UVD) and of famous voice recognition (VO-REC), which included tasks of familiarity evaluation, semantic identification and naming of famous voices. The UVD consisted of twenty stimuli, in which two audio files were consecutively presented; the subject was requested to judge whether the voices belonged to the same or different persons. In the VO-REC, patients were requested to recognize the voi

Pre- and post-synaptic dopamine imaging and its relation with frontostriatal cognitive function in Parkinson disease: PET studies with [11C]NNC 112 and [18F]FDOPA.

Frontostriatal cognitive dysfunction is common in Parkinson disease (PD), but the explanation for its heterogeneous expressions remains unclear. This study examined the dopamine system within the frontostriatal circuitry with positron emission tomography (PET) to investigate pre- and post-synaptic dopamine function in relation to the executive processes in PD. Fifteen non-demented PD patients and 14 healthy controls underwent [(18)F]FDOPA (for dopamine synthesis) and [(11)C]NNC 112 (for D(1) receptors) PET scans and cognitive testing. Parametric images of [(18)F]FDOPA uptake (K(i)) and [(11)C]

Age-dependent neurodegeneration accompanying memory loss in transgenic mice defective in mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 activity.

Oxidative stress may underlie age-dependent memory loss and cognitive decline. Toxic aldehydes, including 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal (HNE), an end product of lipid peroxides, are known to accumulate in the brain in neurodegenerative disease. We have previously shown that mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) detoxifies HNE by oxidizing its aldehyde group. To investigate the role of such toxic aldehydes, we produced transgenic mice, which expressed a dominant-negative form of ALDH2 in the brain. The mice had decreased ability to detoxify HNE in their cortical neurons and accelerated accumulat

Extensive immunolesions of basal forebrain cholinergic system impair offspring recognition in sheep.

The involvement of the basal forebrain cholinergic system has been extensively investigated in instrumental learning but little is known of its participation in social memory, especially in the memorization of individual traits of a conspecific. The present study tested in sheep its contribution to both instrumental learning and individual offspring recognition. Six weeks before parturition, ewes received injections of a specific cholinergic immunotoxin (ME20.4 IgG-saporin) into the lateral ventricles (150 microg) and in some cases additional immunotoxin injections into the nucleus basalis (11

BOLD responses to visual stimulation in survivors of childhood cancer.

Children surviving certain cancers have a high incidence of cognitive deficits caused by central nervous system (CNS) disease or treatments directed at the CNS. To establish the feasibility of using blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study cognitive deficits in survivors of childhood cancer, we tested the hypothesis that this population has the same BOLD response to visual stimulation as healthy subjects. We used BOLD fMRI to measure spatial and temporal patterns of brain activity after brief visual stimulation in 16 survivors of childhood cance
