Impact of single annual treatment and four-monthly treatment for hookworm and Ascaris lumbricoides, and factors associated with residual infection among Kenyan school children.

BACKGROUND: School-based deworming is widely implemented in various countries to reduce the burden of soil-transmitted helminths (STHs), how … for STHs alters risk of acquiring malaria. Children received either a single treatment or 4-monthly albendazole treatments were followed longitudinally from February 2014 to October 2014. The relative impact of treatment and factors associated with residual infections were investigated using mixed-effects regression models. Predisposition to infection was ass …

[Pulmonary Echinococcosis: Surgical Aspects].

Pulmonary cystic echinococcosis is a very rare disease in Germany. It is caused by the larvae of the dog tapeworm (echinococcus granulosus). The liver is the most affected organ, followed by the lungs. Surgery remains the main therapeutic approach for pulmonary CE. Whenever possible, parenchyma-preserving lung surgery should be preferred over anatomic lung resections. To ensure best therapeutic results, surgery needs to be performed under precise consideration of important infectiological aspects and patients should be treated in specialised centres based on interdisciplinary consensus. In add

Neurocysticercosis case with tuberculoma-like epithelioid granuloma strongly suspected by serology and confirmed by mitochondrial DNA.

An Indian woman with multiple and nodular cerebral lesions presenting epithelioid granulomas was diagnosed as suspected malignant tumours and the biopsy was carried at local hospital in Japan. The specimen was pathologically diagnosed as tuberculoma. However, due to her nationality, the authors suspected it to be neurocysticercosis (NCC) and carried out serology and applied mitochondrial DNA analysis of Taenia solium. These diagnostic tools revealed it as NCC radiologically and pathologically mimicking central nervous tuberculomas. Molecular confirmation of NCC cases is strongly recommended wh

Giant pulmonary and hepatic hydatid cysts in a child.

This case report focuses on hydatidosis, one of the most important parasitic zoonoses in Romania. We describe an interesting paediatric case of an eight-year old boy from a rural region presenting with a both giant and life-threatening pulmonary cyst (that was successfully managed) and a hepatic cyst. Noteworthy are the negative consequences of this disorder on children's health and development as a result of prolonged hospitalizations, surgical interventions and chemotherapy.

Primary giant intracranial extracerebral hydatid disease in a child.

The aim of this review is to analyse and summarise the literature data about the incidence of weight gain in patients exposed to atypical antipsychotics during long-term (>or=1 year) treatment regimens. Despite the clinical relevance of the topic, the vast majority of reviewed studies showed methodological limitations. Some trials had retrospective analysis, and concomitant medications also associated with an increased risk of weight gain, such as antidepressants and mood stabilisers, were often prescribed. Results were obtained from clinical trials conducted using flexible dosages; thus, the

Radical vs conservative surgery for hydatid liver cysts: experience from single center.

AIM: To compare the efficacy and safety of radical and conservative surgical interventions for liver hydatid disease. METHODS: The study comprised 59 patients in two groups who had undergone radical and conservative surgical procedures for liver hydatid disease in our department between 2004 and 2009. Preoperative diagnostic tools, medical treatments, demographic and clinical characteristics, postoperative follow-up, and recurrence were compared in both groups. RESULTS: This non-randomized retrospective study included 59 patients who had undergone liver hydatid disease surgery. The radical t

Surgical management of cardiac hydatidosis.

Cardiac hydatidosis is extremely uncommon; only a few case series have been reported in the worldwide medical literature. Whereas hydatid cysts develop in the liver or lungs in 90% of patients who have hydatidosis, only 0.5% to 2% of patients thus diagnosed have cysts of the heart. Herein, we present the clinical summaries of 4 patients who had cardiac hydatid cysts-0.5% of the 763 patients who underwent surgery for thoracic hydatidosis over a period of 20 years at Ibn-Alnafis Teaching Hospital in Baghdad, Iraq. In addition, we discuss our operative technique. A year after surgical treatment a

The use of prednisone in the treatment of trichinellosis.

BACKGROUND: It is not entirely clear when and how steroids should be used to treat trichinellosis. OBJECTIVES: To describe the course of consecutive patients with trichinellosis treated with antihelminthic drugs with and without the addition of prednisone. METHODS: We extracted data from the hospital records of 30 patients hospitalized for trichinellosis contracted after eating poorly cooked pork that came from two wild pigs killed in the Golan Heights, and contacted them for follow-up 5-6 weeks and 6 months after hospital discharge. RESULTS: All the patients who attended a party and ingest

Orbital hydatid cyst manifested as expanding exophthalmos following blunt orbital trauma.

A 14-year-old boy suffered right blunt orbital trauma. X-ray revealed a compressed fracture of the right ethmoidal sinuses. Three months after the trauma, progressive, painless right proptosis developed. Ocular examination revealed a severe proptosis and pronounced down displacement of the right globe without signs of orbital inflammation. A well-demarcated, extraconal right orbital cystic mass was seen on computerized tomography scan. The cyst contents were aspirated and found to contain echinococcal scolices and "hydatid sand." Hypertonic saline was injected and the cyst was excised. Progres

Subretinal cysticercosis.

BACKGROUND: [corrected] Cysticercosis is a parasitic infestation of different body organs by Cysticercosis cellulosae, a larval form of the helminth, Taenia solium, known commonly as pork tapeworm. Ocular involvement of cysticercosis is most common. Other sites of infestation include the central nervous system, subcutaneous tissue, skeletal muscles, and heart muscle. Patients with ocular cysticercosis may be asymptomatic or suffer mild to severe vision loss. CASE REPORT: A patient presented with painless vision loss secondary to a parasitic infection by presumed subretinal cysticercosis. The

A specific antigen-detection ELISA for the diagnosis of human neurocysticercosis. The Cysticercosis Working Group in Peru.

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the detection of antigen secreted by viable Taenia solium metacestodes (Ag-ELISA) was applied to 43 pre-treatment and 47 follow-up cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from Peruvian patients with neurocysticercosis demonstrated by computed tomography and enzyme-linked immunoelectrotransfer blot assay. The sensitivity of the assay was 86%. Negative pre-treatment results in the Ag-ELISA test were restricted to patients with only a single live cyst or only enhancing lesions. Patients with hydrocephalus had higher levels of circulating antigen. There w
