Short stature is a common reason for presenting a child to the pediatrician. Emotional deprivation may cause short stature and may simulate growth hormone deficiency. Diagnosis of emotional deprivation as the cause of growth retardation is difficult and misdiagnosed frequently despite of suspicious clinical signs. We report on 2 patients with growth retardation because of emotional deprivation. At the age of 5 years both children had a severe growth hormone deficiency. They received therapy with growth hormone and showed an increase of growth velocity to > or = 8 cm in the first year of treatm

The clinical course of MELAS syndrome (mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, stroke-like episodes) is described in five cases. The age of onset was 9.2 years on average. Cerebral symptoms occurred at an age of 24.6 years on average. The diagnosis was only made later. Three patients died during the follow-up period. The mean age at death was 33.3 years, the average duration of the disease, 19.6 years. All patients suffered from progressive hearing loss, multiple strokes, and complex-partial and generalized seizures. They all had short stature, normal early development and 'ra

A 43-year-old female was admitted to our hospital for polydipsia and hyperglycemia. She had total blindness and globes were not recognized by inspection, indicating clinical anophthalmia. Physical examination revealed short stature, obesity, prematurely gray hair, shortness of fingers and toes, syndactyly, and multiple dental caries. Laboratory examination showed hyperglycemia, increased glycosilated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and insulin resistance on euglycemic glucose clamp. Blunted growth hormone (GH) secretion was shown in response to insulin-induced hypoglycemia, arginine infusion, and GH-releas

The current knowledge concerning the study of dental cavities cannot account for all clinical aspects of some subjects' resistance to cavity formation. This work concerned, in a first stage, the study of dental anomalies (number, shape and structure), in different groups of children with common diseases. This study has enabled us to evaluate the caries index of the same groups of children. It concerns 13 children with somatotropin deficiency (including 36% of children without any caries), 18 children with chronic renal insufficiency (including 56% of children without any caries), 4 children wi

We describe a brother and sister with mental retardation, short stature, delayed puberty, spherocytic anemia, and an abnormal facial appearance. The similarities to a child with aldolase A deficiency are discussed.

The failure to demonstrate normal humoral and cell-mediated immunity (CMI) in patients diagnosed as SCID is seen to reflect the varied pathogenesis of this syndrome. Two major groups of patients have been described, those with or without an associated absence of the enzyme ADA. The heterogeneity of the syndrome is expressed in variable inheritance patterns (particularly defined X-linked or autosomal recessive modes of inheritance), differing clinical presentations, and significant variability in laboratory findings. Some of this heterogeneity of laboratory findings may in fact be contributed t

Studies of the hormone-receptor interaction have introduced a new chapter in endocrine and metabolic disorders. Receptor (R) dysfunction in human diseases, due either to an alteration in the number or affinity of the R, or to antibodies against the R, is reviewed and classified in the first part of this paper. Disorders where hormone resistance has been implicated, but where R studies are still unavailable are also presented.

The 8-h double pulse oral glucose test is proposed as an alternative screening procedure for determining the adequacy of growth hormone (GH) release. The second pulse of glucose is timely in suppressing GH release and delaying it for a more predictable controlled elevation. Peak GH (mean plus or minus SD) values following the double pulse glucose test were 17 plus or minus 10.2, 16.5 plus or minus 2.2, and 1.3 plus or minus 0.5 ng/ml in normal controls, short stature patients and GH deficient patients, respectively. Peak GH values following insulin hypoglycemia were 36.9 plus or minus 13.8, 21
