Morphological typing of anterior process of the calcaneus from lateral X-ray film.

PURPOSE: To investigate the clinical impact of the proposed morphological typing of the anterior process of the calcaneus using frontal and lateral radiographs. METHODS: We consecutively included lateral radiographs of the foot bones of 294 patients with normal ankle joint development from 1 January 2018 to 30 April 2024 at our general hospital for use in this retrospective observational cross-sectional study. The geometric parameters of Bohler Angle and Gissane Angle were measured according to morphological classification, and the length, height, and angle of the anterior process of the calc

Calvarial Vault Remodeling Technique for Lambdoid Craniosynostosis.

Premature fusion of the lambdoid suture is the most uncommon single-suture synostosis. It presents with a classic "windswept" appearance, a trapezoid-shaped head, and significant skull asymmetry notable for an ipsilateral mastoid bulge and contralateral frontal bossing. Because of the rarity of lambdoid synostosis, little is known about optimal techniques for its treatment. In particular, the proximity of the lambdoid suture to critical intracranial structures such as the superior sagittal and transverse sinuses represents a potential for significant intraoperative bleeding. Prior work has sho

Pedicle myiasis by Lucilia caesar (Diptera, Calliphoridae): An emerging disease in roe deer from north-western Spain.

A total of 35 male roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) from Lugo province (north-western Spain) were examined for pedicle myiasis between 2020 and 2022. All these animals had died by different causes and were examined or preserved just after their death to avoid post-mortem infestations. After external and internal head inspection, five animals were diagnosed with severe myiasis at the basis of the antlers (14.29%; 95% confidence interval = 5.38-31.04). All the affected bucks presented a cutaneous wound (1.5-15 cm in diameter) around the pedicles with extensive tissue destruction, exposition of fro

Computational anatomy and geometric shape analysis enables analysis of complex craniofacial phenotypes in zebrafish.

Due to the complexity of fish skulls, previous attempts to classify craniofacial phenotypes have relied on qualitative features or sparce 2D landmarks. In this work we aim to identify previously unknown 3D craniofacial phenotypes with a semiautomated pipeline in adult zebrafish mutants. We first estimate a synthetic 'normative' zebrafish template using MicroCT scans from a sample pool of wild-type animals using the Advanced Normalization Tools (ANTs). We apply a computational anatomy (CA) approach to quantify the phenotype of zebrafish with disruptions in bmp1a, a gene implicated in later skel

Central Nervous System Involvement in Adult-Onset Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis.

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a life-threatening disease marked by high cytokine levels, uncontrolled lymphocyte, and macrophage proliferation. It is generally a systemic disorder with varying degrees of central nervous system (CNS) involvement, with the vast majority of cases affecting children. We report a case of CNS-HLH in a 51-year-old male who initially presented with fevers, night sweats, fatigue, bilateral arthralgia, and altered mental status. Computed tomography (CT) of the chest, abdomen, and pelvis showed hepatosplenomegaly. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the bra

A Simple Method to Estimate the Trajectory to the Genu of the Corpus Callosum in the Interhemispheric Approach for Distal Anterior Cerebral Artery Aneurysms.

In the interhemispheric approach (IHA) for the distal anterior cerebral artery (DACA) aneurysms, the surgical trajectory to a DACA aneurysm is very important because surgeons sometimes encounter the intraoperative disorientation and the premature rupture. The purpose of this study was to clarify the anatomical landmarks indicating the trajectory to the genu of the corpus callosum (GCC) at the early stage of dissection for the correct intraoperative orientation. "Point A" was defined as the crossing point between the frontal bone and the line connecting the projected external acoustic opening (…

Tissue-specific analysis of Fgf18 gene function in palate development.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies showed that mice lacking Fgf18 function had cleft palate defects and that the FGF18 locus was associated with cleft lip and palate in humans, but what specific roles Fgf18 plays during palatogenesis are unclear. RESULTS: We show that Fgf18 exhibits regionally restricted expression in developing palatal shelves, mandible, and tongue, during palatal outgrowth and fusion in mouse embryos. Tissue-specific inactivation of Fgf18 throughout neural crest-derived craniofacial mesenchyme caused shortened mandible and reduction in ossification of the frontal, nasal, and ante

Ear asymmetry in Tengmalm's owl (Aegolius funereus): Two phases of asymmetrical development of the squamoso-occipital wing.

Ear asymmetry is an adaptive characteristic present in the order of owls (Strigiformes). It developed independently up to seven times in this taxon and is accompanied by morphological adaptations in bones or soft tissues around or at the ear openings. Within all strigiform species, the Boreal or Tengmalm's owl (Aegolius funereus) possesses a particularly complex bilateral ear asymmetry that results from modifications of the neurocranium and some cartilaginous elements. While the ear asymmetry in adult birds has been described in detail, data on its development is scarce. Here we describe the d

Progressive proptosis secondary to pneumosinus dilatans of the ethmoidal sinus in a pediatric patient.

Pneumosinus dilatans (PD) is a rare disorder of unknown etiology which consists of an abnormal dilatation of one or more paranasal air sinuses without radiological evidence of localized mucous membrane alterations, hyperostosis, or bony erosion. Sinus walls are therefore of normal thickness. The enlargement of the bone may be generalized or focal, and apart from the aesthetic problem it carries, it is important to bear in mind the possible functional consequences it may imply. Although PD is usually a benign asymptomatic condition, some patients may develop progressive neurological signs and s

Prenatal and postnatal presentation of PRMT7 related syndrome: Expanding the phenotypic manifestations.

Protein arginine methyltransferase 7 (PRMT7) is a member of a family of enzymes that catalyze the transfer of methyl groups from S-adenosyl-l-methionine to nitrogen atoms on arginine residues. Arginine methylation is involved in multiple biological processes, such as signal transduction, mRNA splicing, transcriptional control, DNA repair, and protein translocation. Currently, 10 patients have been described with mutations in PRMT7. The shared findings include: hypotonia, intellectual disability, short stature, brachydactyly, and mild dysmorphic features. We describe the prenatal, postnatal, an

Combined anatomical variations: The mylohyoid bridge, retromolar canal and accessory palatine canals branched from the canalis sinuosus.

The study of anatomical variations is important not only for collecting anthropometric data, but also for improving clinical protocols and understanding why a particular clinical procedure sometimes does not yield the expected results. We report the case of a 74 year-old patient, in which we observed combined anatomical variants of the mandible and maxillary bone. One of these was the unilateral mylohyoid bridge (MB) of the uncommon, lingular type. This MB extended posteriorly to the spine of Spix, over the sulcus colli behind the spine. It thus formed a common mandibular canal (MC) which furt

A New Double Trapezoid-Shaped Osteotomy for Reduction Malarplasty.

BACKGROUND: Various surgical techniques have been introduced and developed for the reduction of wide zygomatic bone. However, the previous methods have several disadvantages, including the following: potential cheek droop, a limited amount of possible volume reduction, an unfavorable contour due to nonunion, and limited inward repositioning of the zygomatic arch. Thus, the authors introduce an effective method to overcome the limitations and disadvantages of other previous reduction malarplasty techniques. METHODS: From March of 2010 to May of 2014, 532 women and 152 men underwent reduction m
