A Taxonomic Study of the proclia Group and Allied Species of Aphytis (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) from China, with Descriptions of Two New Species.

The genus Aphytis (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) comprises ectoparasitoids of scale insects and includes many species of biological control importance. The proclia group is a major lineage within this genus, with seven species recorded in China, along with two morphologically closely related species. Based on specimens collected from Fuzhou, Fujian Province, we identified four species: A. hispanicus (Mercet), A. pinnaspidis Rosen & DeBach, and two new species, A. latarcuatus Wang & Huang, sp. n. and A. denticulatus Wang & Huang, sp. n. The two new species are described and illustrated, and host as

Paralysis Activity of "Basic Substances" and Rose Extracts on Meloidogyne incognita Second-Stage Juveniles.

To date, searching for bionematicidals is essential. In the absence of nematicides, "Basic Substances" are gaining ground since they are cost-effective, do not mandate an expiration date and have no inherent capacity to cause endocrine-disrupting neurotoxic or immunotoxic effects. Most "Basic Substances" are authorized for the control of phytoparasitic fungi and insects, whereas nematicidals are yet to be available. In this study, we employed "Basic Substances" and in particular, beer, sodium bicarbonate, and sodium chloride, together with rose aromatotherapy by-products, on nematicidal bioass

Stable platelet-rich plasma double-network hydrogel via insect exoskeleton-inspired crosslinking: A bioactive regenerative scaffold.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is widely applied in regenerative medicine owing to having a variety of growth factors and inherent antibacterial activity. However, its clinical applications remained limited due to its rapid degradation, burst release of bioactive molecules, and poor retention at injury sites. To overcome these challenges, in current study we developed a stable double-network PRP hydrogel (i.e., PEG@PRPG) using an insect exoskeleton-inspired crosslinking strategy. By integrating DOPA-modified 4-arm polyethylene glycol (PEG), laccase, and Ca2+/thrombin, we established a covalently r

Termite cellulases: potential target for screening of natural termiticides.

Among the methods tested for termite eradication, termiticides derived from plants are particularly noteworthy. These termiticides represent an effective strategy for insect management, causing minimal environmental harm and posing less risk to human health than widely used chemical controls. The present study aims to obtain crude protein extracts from termites and to characterize their cellulolytic activities for their use in the bioprospecting of natural termiticides. Adult individuals were collected in wood fragments, identified, selected, and sectioned to obtain two protein extracts: one s

Automated video-tracking analysis of Agriotes obscurus wireworm behaviour before, during and after contact with thiamethoxam- and imidacloprid-treated wheat seeds.

Limited studies have highlighted the importance of incorporating behavioural assessments into insecticide efficacy evaluations for wireworm pest control. "For this study, video tracking technology combined with a soil bioassay arena was employed to analyse the behaviour of Agriotes obscurus wireworms before, during, and after exposure to wheat seeds treated with the neonicotinoid insecticides thiamethoxam and imidacloprid at field-relevant concentrations. The analysis identified a set of behavioural key metrics for assessing the effects of these insecticides on wireworms. The results showed th

Rhagovelia Uses Interfacial Run-and-Tumble Locomotion to Improve Food Capture in Flowing Environments.

Rhagovelia oriander is a freshwater water strider native to the rivers and streams of North and South America, known for its distinctive skating movement on the water's surface. This movement resembles the correlated random-walk pattern seen in microorganisms such as Escherichia coli. Previous studies have primarily focused on limb adaptations and biomechanics, leaving the ecological significance inadequately addressed. We combine field observations with controlled laboratory experiments using a flow mill to investigate the dynamics of R. oriander under typical flow conditions. Our findings in

Physiological and growth responses of Chinese chives (Allium tuberosum) to elevated CO2 concentrations and infestation by fungus gnat (Bradysia impatiens).

Elevated CO2 (eCO2) levels can alter plant physiology by reducing stomatal density, weakening transpiration, enhancing photosynthesis, accelerating growth, increasing the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, and lowering nitrogen content. This study investigated the combined effects of eCO2 stress and Bradysia impatiens infestation on Chinese chive (Allium tuberosum) under controlled CO2 growth chamber conditions. A factorial experimental design was implemented, incorporating two CO2 concentration levels and three fungus gnat infestation intensities. The results revealed significant increases in leaf wid

Characterization of Hottentotta judaicus Scorpion Venom: Toxic Effects and Neurobehavioral Modulation in Insect Models.

Scorpion venom is a rich source of diverse bioactive molecules with medicinal importance. While the venoms of many Buthidae scorpions have been extensively studied for their toxicity and therapeutic potential, Hottentotta judaicus scorpion venom (HjSV) remains poorly explored. In this study, using LC-ESI-MS, we show that HjSV has a complex composition. We find that HjSV has no significant cytotoxic effects on three human cancer cell lines, even at concentrations of up to 1000 µg/mL. However, it exerts a dose-dependent insecticidal effect against Drosophila melanogaster, a well-established gene

Convergent Aedes and Drosophila CidB interactomes suggest cytoplasmic incompatibility targets are conserved.

Wolbachia-mediated cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI) is a conditional embryonic lethality induced when Wolbachia-modified sperm fertilizes an uninfected egg. The Wolbachia proteins, CidA and CidB control CI. CidA is a rescue factor that reverses lethality. CidA binds to CidB. CidB contains a deubiquitinating enzyme and induces CI. Precisely how CidB induces CI and what it targets are unknown. Likewise, how CidA prevents sterilization by CidB is not clear. To identify CidB substrates in mosquitos we conducted pull-down assays using recombinant CidA and CidB mixed with Aedes aegypti lysates to id

Diallyl Trisulfide Causes Male Infertility with Oligoasthenoteratospermia in Sitotroga cerealella through the Ubiquitin-Proteasome Pathway.

Essential oils extracted from plant sources along with their biologically active components may have negative effects on insects. Diallyl trisulfide (DAT) is an active component of garlic essential oil, and it exhibits multi-targeted activity against many organisms. Previously we reported that DAT induces male infertility and leads to apyrene and eupyrene sperm dysfunction in Sitotroga cerealella. In this study, we conducted an analysis of testis-specific RNA-Seq data and identified 449 downregulated genes and 60 upregulated genes in the DAT group compared to the control group. The downregulat

Synthesis, characterization of two matrine derivatives and their cytotoxic effect on Sf9 cell of Spodoptera frugiperda.

The invasion of Spodoptera frugiperda has imposed a serious impact on global food security. Matrine is a botanical pesticide with a broad spectrum of insecticidal activity which was recommended for controlling Spodoptera frugiperda. In order to discover effective insecticide for Spodoptera frugiperda, two matrine derivatives modified with carbon disulfide and nitrogen-containing groups were systhesized. And their inhibition activities on Sf9 cell were evaluated. The structural configuration of compounds were characterized by IR, HPLC, MS, NMR and XRD, with yields of 52% and 65%, respectively.

A systematic review of antipsychotic agents for primary delusional infestation.

BACKGROUND: Delusional infestation (DI) is a rare delusional disorder in which individuals have a false belief that they are infested with bugs, parasites, or insects, despite the lack of medical evidence that such an infestation exists. Data on the effectiveness of antipsychotics for DI are limited. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review using EMBASE, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials from inception of the databases up until July 20, 2018. Studies examining typical or atypical antipsychotics for primary DI were included. RESULTS: A total of 51 relevant

Mining for natural product antileishmanials in a fungal extract library.

Leishmaniasis is a Neglected Tropical Disease caused by the insect-vector borne protozoan parasite, Leishmania species. Infection affects millions of the World's poorest, however vaccines are absent and drug therapy limited. Recently, public-private partnerships have developed to identify new modes of controlling leishmaniasis. Most of these collaborative efforts have relied upon the small molecule synthetic compound libraries held by industry, but the number of New Chemical Entities (NCE) identified and entering development as antileishmanials has been very low. In light of this, here we desc

Striped bodypainting protects against horseflies.

Bodypainting is widespread in African, Australian and Papua New Guinean indigenous communities. Many bodypaintings use white or bright yellow/grey/beige stripes on brown skin. Where the majority of people using bodypainting presently live, blood-sucking horseflies are abundant, and they frequently attack the naked brown regions of the human body surface with the risk of transmitting the pathogens of dangerous diseases. Since horseflies are deterred by the black and white stripes of zebras, we hypothesized that white-striped paintings on dark brown human bodies have a similar effect. In a field

Protein Discovery: Combined Transcriptomic and Proteomic Analyses of Venom from the Endoparasitoid Cotesia chilonis (Hymenoptera: Braconidae).

Many species of endoparasitoid wasps provide biological control services in agroecosystems. Although there is a great deal of information on the ecology and physiology of host/parasitoid interactions, relatively little is known about the protein composition of venom and how specific venom proteins influence physiological systems within host insects. This is a crucial gap in our knowledge because venom proteins act in modulating host physiology in ways that favor parasitoid development. Here, we identified 37 possible venom proteins from the polydnavirus-carrying endoparasitoid Cotesia chilonis

Biochemical and immunological characterization of a recombinantly-produced antifungal cysteine proteinase inhibitor from green kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa).

Plant proteinase inhibitors are considered important defense molecules against insect and pathogen attack. The cysteine proteinase inhibitor (CPI) from green kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa) belongs to the cystatin family and shows potent antifungal activity (in vitro and in vivo). However, the low abundance of this molecule in fruit (6μg/g of fresh fruit) seems to limit further investigations on the interaction between phytocystatin and photopathogenic fungi. In this paper the cDNA of the kiwi CPI was expressed in Escherichia coli. Fifteen N-terminal amino acids were identified by Edman degrad

Biochemical characterisation of α-amylase inhibitors from Achyranthes aspera and their interactions with digestive amylases of coleopteran and lepidopteran insects.

BACKGROUND: Starchy seeds are an important food and a source of dietary ingredients in many countries. However, they suffer from extensive predation by bruchids (weevils) and other pests. α-Amylase inhibitors are attractive candidates for the control of seed weevils, as these insects are highly dependent on starch as an energy source. RESULTS: A proteinaceous α-amylase inhibitor from the seeds of Achyranthes aspera was identified, purified and characterised. In electrophoretic analysis, two prominent amylase inhibitor activity bands (AI1 and AI2) were detected. The inhibitor was purified 9.99

The ligand-binding domains of the three RXR-USP nuclear receptor types support distinct tissue and ligand specific hormonal responses in transgenic Drosophila.

In insects, 20-hydroxyecdysone acts by binding on a heterodimer constituted by the ecdysone receptor (EcR) and Ultraspiracle (USP), the homolog to the vertebrate retinoid X receptor (RXR). Two types of USP have been characterized based on their structure and function, Mecopterida USP (Diptera/Lepidoptera USP), in particular the fruitfly Drosophila melanogaster USP (DmUSP) and non Mecopterida USP, exemplified by the beetle Tribolium castaneum USP (TcUSP) both showing structural differences from the vertebrate RXR. Here, by combining in vivo and organ culture observations in Drosophila transgeni

[Chagas disease].

Chagas disease (human American trypanosomiasis) is a zoonose caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi. Vectors are Triatoma spp. insects. T. cruzi can also be transmitted by blood transfusion, organ transplantation, and transplacentally. Infection is generally acquired during infancy. The acute infection is rarely symptomatic and is followed by a chronic phase. Chronic infected people are asymptomatic (indeterminate stage) and may remain at this stage for the rest of their lives. About a third of infected people will develop a chronic Chagas disease which affects the heart and the digestive t
