Developing of robust and high accurate ECG beat classification by combining Gaussian mixtures and wavelets features.

Electrocardiogram (ECG) beat classification is a significant application in computer-aided analysis and diagnosis technologies. This paper proposed a method to detect, extract informative features, and classify ECG beats utilizing real ECG signals available in the standard MIT-BIH Arrhythmia database, with 10,502 beats had been extracted from it. The present study classifies the ECG beat into six classes, normal beat (N), Left bundle branch block beat, Right bundle branch block beat, Premature ventricular contraction, atrial premature beat, and aberrated atrial premature, using Gaussian mixtur

Applying Deep Neural Network Analysis to High-Content Image-Based Assays.

The etiological underpinnings of many CNS disorders are not well understood. This is likely due to the fact that individual diseases aggregate numerous pathological subtypes, each associated with a complex landscape of genetic risk factors. To overcome these challenges, researchers are integrating novel data types from numerous patients, including imaging studies capturing broadly applicable features from patient-derived materials. These datasets, when combined with machine learning, potentially hold the power to elucidate the subtle patterns that stratify patients by shared pathology. In this

Feasibility of two-dimensional dose distribution deconvolution using convolution neural networks.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility of two-dimensional (2D) dose distribution deconvolution using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) instead of an analytical approach for an in-house scintillation detector that has a detector-interface artifact in the penumbra region. METHODS: Datasets of 2D dose distributions were acquired from a medical linear accelerator of Novalis Tx. The datasets comprise two different sizes of square radiation fields and 13 clinical intensity-modulated radiation treatment (IMRT) plans. These datasets were divided into two datasets (tr

Sensitivity and specificity of computer vision classification of eyelid photographs for programmatic trachoma assessment.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Trachoma programs base treatment decisions on the community prevalence of the clinical signs of trachoma, assessed by direct examination of the conjunctiva. Automated assessment could be more standardized and more cost-effective. We tested the hypothesis that an automated algorithm could classify eyelid photographs better than chance. METHODS: A total of 1,656 field-collected conjunctival images were obtained from clinical trial participants in Niger and Ethiopia. Images were scored for trachomatous inflammation-follicular (TF) and trachomatous inflammation-intense (TI) accor

Detrended fluctuation analysis of the oximetry signal to assist in paediatric sleep apnoea-hypopnoea syndrome diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) provides information that improves the diagnostic ability of the oximetry signal in the diagnosis of paediatric sleep apnoea-hypopnoea syndrome (SAHS). APPROACH: A database composed of 981 blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) recordings in children was used to extract DFA-derived features in order to quantify the scaling behaviour and the fluctuations of the SpO2 signal. The 3% oxygen desaturation index (ODI3) was also computed for each subject. Fast correlation-based filter (FCBF) was then applied to select an optimum subset of re

Automatic diagnosis of abnormal macula in retinal optical coherence tomography images using wavelet-based convolutional neural network features and random forests classifier.

The present research intends to propose a fully automatic algorithm for the classification of three-dimensional (3-D) optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans of patients suffering from abnormal macula from normal candidates. The method proposed does not require any denoising, segmentation, retinal alignment processes to assess the intraretinal layers, as well as abnormalities or lesion structures. To classify abnormal cases from the control group, a two-stage scheme was utilized, which consists of automatic subsystems for adaptive feature learning and diagnostic scoring. In the first stage, a

Cardiac sarcoidosis classification with deep convolutional neural network-based features using polar maps.

AIMS: The aim of this study was to determine whether deep convolutional neural network (DCNN)-based features can represent the difference between cardiac sarcoidosis (CS) and non-CS using polar maps. METHODS: A total of 85 patients (33 CS patients and 52 non-CS patients) were analyzed as our study subjects. One radiologist reviewed PET/CT images and defined the left ventricle region for the construction of polar maps. We extracted high-level features from the polar maps through the Inception-v3 network and evaluated their effectiveness by applying them to a CS classification task. Then we int

Tumor Detection in Automated Breast Ultrasound Using 3-D CNN and Prioritized Candidate Aggregation.

Automated whole breast ultrasound (ABUS) has been widely used as a screening modality for examination of breast abnormalities. Reviewing hundreds of slices produced by ABUS, however, is time consuming. Therefore, in this paper, a fast and effective computer-aided detection system based on 3-D convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and prioritized candidate aggregation is proposed to accelerate this reviewing. First, an efficient sliding window method is used to extract volumes of interest (VOIs). Then, each VOI is estimated the tumor probability with a 3-D CNN, and VOIs with higher estimated pro

Automated Detection of Clinically Significant Prostate Cancer in mp-MRI Images Based on an End-to-End Deep Neural Network.

Automated methods for detecting clinically significant (CS) prostate cancer (PCa) in multi-parameter magnetic resonance images (mp-MRI) are of high demand. Existing methods typically employ several separate steps, each of which is optimized individually without considering the error tolerance of other steps. As a result, they could either involve unnecessary computational cost or suffer from errors accumulated over steps. In this paper, we present an automated CS PCa detection system, where all steps are optimized jointly in an end-to-end trainable deep neural network. The proposed neural netw

Epithelium-Stroma Classification via Convolutional Neural Networks and Unsupervised Domain Adaptation in Histopathological Images.

Epithelium-stroma classification is a necessary preprocessing step in histopathological image analysis. Current deep learning based recognition methods for histology data require collection of large volumes of labeled data in order to train a new neural network when there are changes to the image acquisition procedure. However, it is extremely expensive for pathologists to manually label sufficient volumes of data for each pathology study in a professional manner, which results in limitations in real-world applications. A very simple but effective deep learning method, that introduces the conc

Deep Voting: A Robust Approach Toward Nucleus Localization in Microscopy Images.

Robust and accurate nuclei localization in microscopy image can provide crucial clues for accurate computer-aid diagnosis. In this paper, we propose a convolutional neural network (CNN) based hough voting method to localize nucleus centroids with heavy cluttering and morphologic variations in microscopy images. Our method, which we name as deep voting, mainly consists of two steps. (1) Given an input image, our method assigns each local patch several pairs of voting offset vectors which indicate the positions it votes to, and the corresponding voting confidence (used to weight each votes), our

Automatic detection of abnormal breast thermograms using asymmetry analysis of texture features.

Thermography is a non-invasive imaging modality that represents surface temperature variations of the skin in the form of images called thermograms. The surface temperature around the area of cancerous cells is slightly higher than normal tissues and this area is seen as hot spots on thermograms. In normal breast thermograms, symmetric heat patterns are observed in both breasts, but in the case of unilateral abnormality, asymmetry is observed. As the intensity variations in thermograms represent surface temperature changes, texture features that would enhance thermal asymmetry, between right a

Real-time automated neural-network sleep classifier using single channel EEG recording for detection of narcolepsy episodes.

Conventional sleep staging and classification methods involve complicated settings to acquire multiple electrophysiological signals for extended recording durations, followed by specialists' analysis which is a time consuming exercise. These procedures need to be carried out in sleep clinics and are not suitable for applications based on real-time sleep monitoring and analysis. In this paper, a real-time sleep staging and classification technique is proposed using single EEG channel based on an artificial neural network classifier. This method is optimized to run on portable processing platfor

Neuropathological findings processed by artificial neural networks (ANNs) can perfectly distinguish Alzheimer's patients from controls in the Nun Study.

BACKGROUND: Many reports have described that there are fewer differences in AD brain neuropathologic lesions between AD patients and control subjects aged 80 years and older, as compared with the considerable differences between younger persons with AD and controls. In fact some investigators have suggested that since neurofibrillary tangles (NFT) can be identified in the brains of non-demented elderly subjects they should be considered as a consequence of the aging process. At present, there are no universally accepted neuropathological criteria which can mathematically differentiate AD from

Modeling of acetylcholinesterase inhibition by tacrine analogues using Bayesian-regularized Genetic Neural Networks and ensemble averaging.

Acetylcholinesterase inhibition was modeled for a set of 136 tacrine analogues using Bayesian-regularized Genetic Neural Networks (BRGNNs). In the BRGNN approach the Bayesian-regularization avoids overtraining/overfitting and the genetic algorithm (GA) allows exploring an ample pool of 3D-descriptors. The predictive capacity of our selected model was evaluated by averaging multiple validation sets generated as members of diverse-training set neural network ensembles (NNEs). The ensemble averaging provides reliable statistics. When 40 members are assembled, the NNE provides a reliable measure o

A Structured and Methodological Review on Multi-View Human Activity Recognition for Ambient Assisted Living.

Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) leverages technology to support the elderly and individuals with disabilities. A key challenge in these systems is efficient Human Activity Recognition (HAR). However, no study has systematically compared single-view (SV) and multi-view (MV) Human Activity Recognition approaches. This review addresses this gap by analyzing the evolution from single-view to multi-view recognition systems, covering benchmark datasets, feature extraction methods, and classification techniques. We examine how activity recognition systems have transitioned to multi-view architectures u

Evaluation of continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis based on a neural-network.

PURPOSE: Continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis (CCC), as a prerequisite for successful cataract surgery, is one of the most important and difficult steps in phacoemulsification. In clinical practice, the size and circularity of the capsular tear and eccentricity with the lens are often employed as indicators to evaluate the effect of CCC. METHODS: We present a neural network-based model to improve the efficiency and accuracy of evaluation for capsulorhexis results. The capsulorhexis results evaluation model consists of the detection network based on U-Net and the nonlinear fitter built from fu
