Longitudinal treatment of cleft lip and palate in developing countries: dentistry as part of a multidisciplinary endeavor.

Cleft lip and palate affects roughly 1 in 600 children and predisposes patients to a lifetime of functional and esthetic discrepancies. Disparities in access as well as quality of care exist worldwide, with many children in developing countries unable to receive treatment. In the late 20th century, humanitarian medical missions emerged as a means of delivering surgical expertise to patients in resource-limited settings. These early missions took on a patient-centered approach focused solely on cleft repair, with little emphasis on treating the dental abnormalities that arose after the initial

Neuropathy of the infraorbital area following rapid palatal expansion: A case report.

RATIONALE: Neuropathic pain in the orofacial region, although relatively uncommon, can occur after dental procedures performed in trigeminally innervated areas. Miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE) is widely adopted to correct maxillary transverse deficiency in adults and is generally safe; however, neurosensory complications are rarely documented. This case highlights infraorbital neuropathy following MARPE, underscoring the need for clinical vigilance. PATIENT CONCERNS: A healthy 28-year-old female presented with numbness and tenderness on the left midface approximately 5 week

Morphological Study of the Characteristics of Lips in Children With Mouth Breathing.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the association between long-term mouth breathing habits and the morphological characteristics of children's lips, providing a basis for clinical diagnosis and early intervention. Given the cross-sectional design and reliance on parental questionnaire-based exposure classification, causal inference is not warranted; findings are strictly associative. METHODS: A total of 210 children aged 6-12 years were enrolled, comprising 105 children clinically classified as long-term mouth-breathing children and 105 nasal-breathing children. Classification was based

Comparison of Occlusion Using Conventional Versus Virtual Model Surgery in Segmental Maxillary Orthognathic Surgery Using the American Board of Orthodontics Discrepancy Index.

BACKGROUND: Maxillary segmentation is essential for achieving optimal occlusion in some cases by correcting transverse discrepancies, Bolton's discrepancy, arch deformities, and alveolar angulation. Although traditional plaster model techniques are time-consuming and error-prone, many surgeons continue using them to set occlusion in segmental maxillary surgery despite the superior precision and outcomes of virtual surgical planning. Limited research has directly compared the clinical utility of virtual surgical planning-based segmentation versus traditional model surgery. PURPOSE: The purpose

A Novel Nonsurgical Smooth Thread Technique to Correct Gummy Smiles.

BACKGROUND: "Gummy smile" describes the aesthetically unappealing display of gums that extends more than 2 to 3 mm when individuals smile. The multifactorial etiology of the gummy smile leads to various surgical and nonsurgical treatment strategies, including orthodontic therapies, lip fillers, and primarily botulinum toxin as a nonsurgical treatment. OBJECTIVES: In this paper, the authors present the preliminary report of a novel, minimally invasive, and non-neurotoxic treatment option for gummy smiles based on the insertion of smooth-surfaced resorbable polydioxanone threads along the vecto

Comparison of anchorage reinforcement with temporary anchorage devices or a Herbst appliance during lingual orthodontic protraction of mandibular molars without maxillary counterbalance extraction.

BACKGROUND: Orthodontic protraction of mandibular molars without maxillary counterbalance extraction in cases of aplasia or extraction requires stable anchorage. Reinforcement may be achieved by using either temporary anchorage devices (TAD) or a fixed, functional appliance. The objective was to compare the clinical effectiveness of both methods by testing the null-hypothesis of no significant difference in velocity of space closure (in mm/month) between them. In addition, we set out to describe the quality of posterior space management and treatment-related factors, such as loss of anchorage
