Typhoid fever has assumed importance due to the increased incidence of drug resistance in India. The exact magnitude of the problem is not accurately known. The objective of this study was to collect retrospectively the data on the incidence and frequency of typhoid fever among hospital admissions at St. Johns Medical College Hospital (SJMCH), Bangalore during the year 1987 to 1992 and also to study the sensitivity pattern and the use of antibiotics. The study was also aimed at comparison of immunogenicity and tolerance of conventional vaccine to the newer polysaccharide vaccine. It was found

Intradermal immunization of 229 chronic neuropsychic patients in Gura Ocnitzei Sanatorium, Dîmbovitza County, where a typhoid fever outbreak burst, was performed with a freeze-dried typhoid vaccine, suspended in purified and concentrated tetanic anatoxin. Adverse reactions were minimal and immunologic response, evaluated by laboratory tests, was good, reaching the level of that obtained as a result of classic vaccination methods (subcutaneous antityphoid and intramuscular anti-tetanic). Both after vaccination and also booster O and H agglutinating titers increased 4-7 times and anti-S. typhi.

In a previous paper (Brodie, 1977) the value of the Widal test in the diagnosis of typhoid fever was shown to be limited. Evaluation of possible alternative tests showed that: (1) the sensitivity of the anti-human globulin (Coombs') test appeared greater than that of the agglutination test but the length of time (48 h) before results were available rendered it of little value in rapid diagnosis: (2) the complement fixation test offered no particular help towards diagnosis; (3) immunized and non-immunized typhoid fever patients developed fimbrial antibodies, as also did immunized healthy indivi

The authors present a summary of the information yielded by a number of collaborative field and laboratory studies of typhoid vaccines conducted under the auspices of the World Health Organization, comparing, in particular, the results of various controlled field trials carried out in British Guiana, Poland, the USSR and Yugoslavia, and attempting to evaluate the effectiveness of the vaccines in man.Acetone-inactivated typhoid vaccine, which has been established as an international reference preparation, has been proved in field trials to be of a high degree of effectiveness and to confer prot

Modern knowledge regarding 'healthy bacterial carriers' traces back to the legacy of typhoid Mary, who unknowingly infected >50 people with enteric fever. Yet, the intricacies of typhoidal Salmonella carriage, inclusive of Salmonella Typhi and Paratyphi A/B, remain largely unknown. Using data collected by the United Kingdom Health Security Agency's Salmonella reference laboratory and enhanced surveillance, we examined cases of enteric fever in England and Wales between 2004-2023, to track disease trends and identify carriers. In total, 8,297 cases of enteric fever were reported during the stud

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the frequency of Salmonella Paratyphi found in blood cultures and evaluate the antibiotic susceptibility pattern of Salmonella isolates to different antibiotics. Additionally, the study aims to assess the paradigm shift in the trend of enteric fever caused by Salmonella Typhi (S. Typhi) to Salmonella Paratyphi(S. Paratyphi) .
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study.
PARTICIPANT: The study enrolled patients aged 12 years and above diagnosed with enteric fever (positive blood culture) and admitted to Peelamedu Samanaidu Govindasamy Naidu (PSG) Hospital.

The emergence of decreased ciprofloxacin susceptibility (DCS) in Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi and serovar Paratyphi A, B or C limits treatment options. We studied the impact of DCS isolates on the fate of travellers returning with enteric fever and possible alternative treatment options. We evaluated the clinical features, susceptibility data and efficacy of empirical treatment in patients with positive blood cultures of a DCS isolate compared to patients infected with a ciprofloxacin-susceptible (CS) isolate in the period from January 2002 to August 2008. In addition, the pharmacokinetic

Enteric fever, caused by Salmonella enterica serovars Typhi and Paratyphi A (S. Typhi and S. Paratyphi A) remains a major public health problem in many settings. The disease is limited to locations with poor sanitation which facilitates the transmission of the infecting organisms. Efficacious and inexpensive vaccines are available for S. Typhi, yet are not commonly deployed to control the disease. Lack of vaccination is due partly to uncertainty of the disease burden arising from a paucity of epidemiological information in key locations. We have collected and analyzed data from 3,898 cases of
