The enigmatic morula: mechanisms of development, cell fate determination, self-correction and implications for ART.

BACKGROUND: Assisted reproduction technology offers the opportunity to observe the very early stages of human development. However, due to practical constraints, for decades morphological examination of embryo development has been undertaken at a few isolated time points at the stages of fertilisation (Day 1), cleavage (Day 2-3) and blastocyst (Day 5-6). Rather surprisingly, the morula stage (Day 3-4) has been so far neglected, despite its involvement in crucial cellular processes and developmental decisions. OBJECTIVE AND RATIONALE: The objective of this review is to collate novel and unsusp

Factors that influence the self-reported confidence of pediatric residents as team leaders during cardiopulmonary resuscitation: A national survey.

OBJECTIVE: The leadership skills of pediatric residents during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) may have major impacts on their performance. These skills should be addressed during the pediatric residency training program. Therefore, we aimed to identify the perceptions of residents regarding their level of confidence in providing or leading a real pediatric CPR code, and to identify different factors that might influence their self-confidence when assuming the role of a team leader during a real CPR. DESIGN & SETTING: Cross-sectional paper-based and online electronic surveys were conducte

The effect of post-traumatic stress disorder on refugees' parenting and their children's mental health: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Children and adolescents, who account for most of the world's refugees, have an increased prevalence of psychological disorders. The mental health of refugee children is often associated with the severity of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in their caregivers. Despite the potential for refugee caregivers' PTSD to affect child mental health, little evidence exists concerning the underlying mechanisms of this association. This study tested the effect of refugee caregivers' previous trauma and levels of ongoing stressors on current PTSD, and in turn how this influences parenting

Sirtuins in gamete biology and reproductive physiology: emerging roles and therapeutic potential in female and male infertility.

BACKGROUND: Sirtuins (SIRT1-7) are a family of NAD+-dependent deacetylases that catalyze post-translational modifications of proteins. Together, they respond to metabolic challenges, inflammatory signals or hypoxic/oxidative stress, and are associated with aging and longevity. The role of Sirtuins in the regulation of fertility emerged in 2003 when a defective reproductive phenotype was observed in SIRT1-null mice. Although studies on Sirtuins in reproductive biology have been increasing in the last years, a recent comprehensive update on this issue is still lacking. OBJECTIVE AND RATIONALE:

Prosociality from early adolescence to young adulthood: A longitudinal study of individuals with a history of language impairment.

BACKGROUND: Longitudinal research into the development of prosociality contributes vitally to understanding of individual differences in psychosocial outcomes. Most of the research to date has been concerned with prosocial behaviour in typically developing young people; much less has been directed to the course of development in individuals with developmental disorders. AIMS: This study reports a longitudinal investigation of prosocial behaviour in young people with language impairment (LI), and compares trajectories of development to typically developing age-matched peers (AMPs). METHODS AN

The perception of strabismus by children and adults.

BACKGROUND: Visible strabismus has been shown to have adverse psychosocial consequences. It remains controversial if esotropia or exotropia is perceived more negatively. The aim of this study was to determine if esotropia or exotropia and the eye (side) in which strabismus is present are perceived differently. We also asked our adult participants: (1) if they thought visible strabismus should be corrected by surgery, (2) if they thought that strabismus surgery should only be to improve the cosmesis, and (3) if they thought that the surgery should be paid for by health insurance. METHODS: One

[Etiology and treatment of eating disorders in adolescents: a report of 6 cases].

The occurrence of eating disorders in Chinese adolescents is increasing. However the cause, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of this disorder are rarely reported by pediatricians. This paper investigated the cause and treatment of six cases of eating disorders in adolescent patients. The medical data of six cases of eating disorders in the Shanghai Children's Medical Center from January 2003 to September 2005 were retrospectively reviewed. The patients were 5 girls and 1 boy, whose onset ages ranged from 12.4 to 15.8 years. They were initially referred to the clinic between 12.9 to 16.7 year

Integrity of artificial intelligence and machine learning evidence in spine surgery: a critical appraisal of systematic reviews.

OBJECTIVE: Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are increasingly integrated into spine surgery across diagnostic, perioperative, and predictive applications, driven by their potential to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and patient safety. As this literature on AI and ML in spine surgery rapidly expands, concerns have emerged regarding selective reporting and overemphasis on algorithmic performance without adequate attention to transparency, bias, or clinical applicability. Such practices raise the risk of reporting spin, particularly within systematic reviews and meta-analyses,

Effectiveness of resilience-based interventions to promote mental well-being among secondary school children: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Mental health conditions are becoming increasingly prevalent among school children. Well-being and resilience are vital for preventing and mitigating the severity of mental health issues. Equipping children with effective coping mechanisms and protective behaviours enhances their resilience to manage challenging life circumstances, leading to improved mental health. While evidence supports the effectiveness of resilience-based interventions in reducing mental health problems in adolescents, it is unclear which components enhance resilience most effectively and how follow-up duratio

Socioeconomic inequalities in physical activity among children and adolescents in the UK and Ireland: a scoping review mapping evidence from 2015 to 2025.

OBJECTIVES: Regular physical activity (PA) in childhood and adolescence provides health benefits. Levels of PA among children and adolescents are influenced by a range of factors, some of which are well-established, including sex and age; however, evidence regarding the association between socioeconomic status (SES) and PA remains equivocal, yet children from lower-income households are often less active than their more affluent peers. In the UK and Ireland, despite national policies promoting PA, evidence on how socioeconomic inequalities in moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) have changed over ti

The Davos Alzheimer's Collaborative Healthcare System Preparedness US Early Detection of Cognitive Impairment Program in primary care: Methodology.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders (ADRD) pose a growing global health challenge, with cases expected to nearly triple by 2050. Early detection is critical for improving outcomes, yet most cases remain undiagnosed. Integrating routine cognitive assessments into primary care can provide timely access to treatments, and improve disease management and patient outcomes. The Davos Alzheimer’s Collaborative Healthcare System Preparedness (DAC-SP) program created an Early Detection Blueprint (dacblueprint.org), a digital, open-access microsite which translates evidence-based implem

Digital focus groups in healthcare interventions: A reflexive methodological analysis of how socio-technical and relational factors co-produce qualitative data.

BACKGROUND: Digital focus groups are increasingly used in health research, yet their methodological implications within complex interventions remain insufficiently examined. When conducted with pre-existing cohorts, digital focus groups may function not only as evaluative tools but also as relational and socio-technical encounters that shape the generation of qualitative data. The goal of the present study was to examine how digital focus groups operate within this context. METHODS: This study presents a methodological re-analysis of focus group material originally collected for the evaluatio

Stepping into the Academe: The Lived Experience of Adjunct Novice Nurse Faculty.

BACKGROUND: The nursing faculty shortage in the Philippines has reached a critical stage, which has now resulted in recruiting staff nurses without or currently taking master's degree into the academe to become adjunct nurse faculty. This phenomenon is quite new to most educational institutions in the local, regional, and even the national setting, warranting further exploration. OBJECTIVE: This study explored the lived experience of adjunct nurse faculty. It generated information on their motives, preparations, and how they faced and overcame the challenges. METHODS: A Husserlian descriptiv

Behind the Screens-Social Media and Psychosocial Outcomes in Adolescents With Cleft Lip/Palate.

BACKGROUND: Social media influences adolescent self-image and confidence, yet its impact on psychosocial outcomes in adolescents with cleft lip and/or palate remains poorly defined. This population may be particularly vulnerable given the importance of craniofacial features to self-perception during adolescence. Negative self-perceptions have been linked to psychosocial distress and interest in revisional surgery, whereas social media may also provide peer support and cleft-related information. This study examined social media use patterns and their association with psychosocial functioning in

Pulmonary Hypertension in Down Syndrome Versus Non-syndromic Pediatric Populations With Congenital Heart Disease: A Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: Down syndrome (DS), or trisomy 21, is the most common chromosomal disorder associated with congenital heart disease (CHD), profoundly affecting disease progression and management. While 4-10% of all CHD cases occur in DS, 40-60% of individuals with DS have CHD. CHD remains the leading cause of mortality in DS within the first two years of life, with atrioventricular septal defect (AVSD), ventricular septal defect (VSD), atrial septal defect (ASD), patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), and tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) being most prevalent. Pulmonary hypertension (PH) frequently complicates t
