Clinical and experimental investigations on the significance of Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma urealyticum have revealed different and contradictory results. Both germs are frequently discovered in young, sexually active persons. Ureaplasma urealyticum might be the cause of some cases of non-gonococcal urethritis. M. hominis seems to be one causative agent of endometritis, salpingitis, parametritis and septicaemia after birth; we do not know yet, however, how often this may be the case. M. hominis may also infect the newborn, e.g., it may cause meningitis and encephalitis. The diagnosis of

Urologic complications occurred in four (20%) of 20 kidney transplants performed in 18 patients. The complications encountered were acute hemorrhage from the distal end of the ureter, a calyceal fistula, a ureteral stricture with associated fungus infection, and obstructive uropathy. In two of the four cases it was necessary to sacrifice the transplant.

BACKGROUND: Recent increased use of medical images induces further burden of their interpretation for physicians. A plain X-ray is a low-cost examination that has low-dose radiation exposure and high availability, although diagnosing urolithiasis using this method is not always easy. Since the advent of a convolutional neural network via deep learning in the 2000s, computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) has had a great impact on automatic image analysis in the urological field. The objective of our study was to develop a CAD system with deep learning architecture to detect urinary tract stones on a pl

Idiopathic renal hypouricemia is a rare hereditary condition. Type 2 renal hyperuricemia (RHUC2) is caused by a mutation in the SLC2A9 gene, which encodes a high‑capacity glucose and urate transporter, glucose transporter (GLUT)9. RHUC2 predisposes to exercise‑induced acute renal failure (EIARF) and nephrolithiasis, which is caused by a defect in renal tubular urate transport and is characterized by increased clearance of renal uric acid. In the present study a case of a 35‑year‑old Chinese man with EIARF is reported. The patient had isolated renal hypouricemia, with a serum uric acid level of

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to identify factors associated with absent hematuria in patients with symptomatic urinary stones.
METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed the clinical and imaging findings of emergency department patients who underwent computed tomography (CT) for suspected ureteral colic over the past 2years. All patients also underwent a microscopic urinalysis, and the presence of 4 or more red blood cells/high-power field was defined as microhematuria.
RESULTS: A total of 798 patients were included in this study. Of these patients, 750 (94.0%) presented with hema

BACKGROUND: Renal squamous cell carcinoma is a rare primary tumor of the kidney that rapidly invades local structures and has a poor prognosis. Presentation is usually nonspecific and is associated with renal stone disease and chronic infection. Immunosuppressed renal transplant recipients are more likely to develop a malignancy than the general population. Squamous cell carcinoma of the kidney in the context of a renal transplant and long-term immunosuppression has not previously been described in the literature.
CASE REPORT: A 46-year-old white man with previous renal stones and recurrent u

Renal hypouricemia (RHUC) is a hereditary disease characterized by a low level of plasma urate but with normal urinary urate excretion. RHUC type 1 is caused by mutations of the urate transporter URAT1 gene (SLC22A12). However, the plasma urate levels of URAT1 knockout mice are no different from those of wild-type mice. In the present study, a double knockout mouse, in which the URAT1 and uricase (Uox) genes were deleted (Urat1-Uox-DKO), were used as an experimental animal model of RHUC type 1 to investigate RHUC and excise-induced acute kidney injury (EIAKI). Mice were given a variable conten

PURPOSE: Double-pigtail stent intolerance reduces patient's quality of life. By decreasing the amount of material within the bladder, it should be possible to attenuate stent's symptoms. We evaluated the tolerance of a new stent with a dedicated questionnaire.
METHODS: The major innovation of the pigtail suture stent (PSS) is in the replacement of the lower part of the double-pigtail stent with a 0.3F suture. A total of 79 consecutive patients agreed to be fitted with a PSS. The double-pigtail stents of 24 patients complaining strongly of symptoms were replaced with PSS (group 1), and 55 othe

OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical effects of two surgical approaches to treatment of horseshoe kidney.
METHODS: From January 1965 to December 1982, 15 patients (11 males, 4 females; aged 14 months to 59 years with a median of 31 years) with horseshoe kidney underwent surgical treatment by the waist cretroperitoneal approach (the waist-approach group). The clinical symptoms and signs were as follows: pain in the waist and abdomen (12 patients), hematuria (7), urinary frequency (4), gastrointestinal disorder (3), and abdominal masses (2). The urography revealed urinary calculus in 10 patients,

OBJECTIVES: To use the elementary physical measurements of temperature and size to prove that the thermal effects produced by the holmium laser's pulses are due to the formation of a plasma bubble. The physical phenomenon related to high temperatures generated during procedures with the holmium laser (holmium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet) was the object of our interest.
METHODS: Using a double micrometric slide attached to a 550-microm optic fiber and two thermocouples submerged in water, a series of pulses of 0.8 J at 10 to 30 Hz was delivered from a holmium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser, and we

OBJECTIVES: To test the hypothesis that stone-forming patients with type II diabetes (DM-II) have a high prevalence of uric acid (UA) stones and present with some of the biochemical features of gouty diathesis (GD).
METHODS: The demographic and initial biochemical data from 59 stone-forming patients with DM-II (serum glucose greater than 126 mg/dL, no insulin therapy, older than 35 years of age) from Dallas, Texas and Durham, North Carolina were retrieved and compared with data from 58 patients with GD and 116 with hyperuricosuric calcium oxalate urolithiasis (HUCU) without DM.
RESULTS: UA s

23 cases of flexible retrograde nephroscopy system for undiagnosed hematuria or filling defect are reviewed. The introduction was carried out by combining hydraulic dilation, rigid ureterorenoscopy and a working sheath. The indications were merely diagnostic (filling defects and/or haematuria). The success rate was very high (22 of 23). 9 cases of papillary tumors, 4 cases of small radiolucent stones and 1 case of papillary necrosis were diagnosed. In 8 cases no pathology was found. The complication rate was extremely low and the postoperative course was uneventful. Flexible instruments offer
