Comparison of steam technology and a two-step cleaning (water/detergent) and disinfecting (1,000 resp. 5,000 ppm hypochlorite) method using microfiber cloth for environmental control of multidrug-resistant organisms in an intensive care unit.

Aim: The aim of this prospective observational study was to evaluate the impact of two cleaning and disinfecting methods and the use of steam against methicillin-resistant Staphyl ococcus aureus, vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis, carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa and multidrug-resistant (MDR) Acinetobacter baumannii in a tertiary referral hospital. Methods: McFarland 0.5 suspensions (content 1.5 x 108 cfu/ml) of four challenge bacterial species were prepared and used to inoculate different sites in three ICU rooms. One of the following methods was used in each room: steam t…

Single-lung transplantation for pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis (PAM) is a rare idiopathic lung disease characterized by the accumulation of innumerable micro … bronchial anastomosis. Multiple sputum cultures suggested the presence of Klebsiella pneumoniae and Acinetobacter baumannii. The last follow-up was conducted in April 2019; the patient recovered well. CONCLUSION: This case presents the imaging findings of a patient with PAM before and after LuTx and confirms the effectiveness of LuTx for the treatment of this disease.

The "Old" and the "New" Antibiotics for MDR Gram-Negative Pathogens: For Whom, When, and How.

The recent expansion of multidrug resistant and pan-drug-resistant pathogens poses significant challenges in the treatment of healthcare associated infections. An important advancement, is a handful of recently launched new antibiotics targeting some of the current most problematic Gram-negative pathogens, namely carbapenem-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) and carbapenem-resistant P. aeruginosa (CRPA). Less options are available against carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) and strains producing metallo-beta lactamases (MBL). Ceftazidime-avibactam signaled a turning point in th…

Lung Microbiota and Pulmonary Inflammatory Cytokines Expression Vary in Children With Tracheomalacia and Adenoviral or Mycoplasma pneumoniae Pneumonia.

Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a worldwide infectious disease caused by bacteria, viruses, or a combination of these infectious agent … found in tracheomalacia and AVP. Microbiota analysis identified a high load of multi-drug resistant Acinetobacter baumannii in the lung microbiota of several inpatients, which might be associated with the long hospitalization length and intra-group differences at the individual level. This study will help to understand the microbial etiology of tracheomalacia, AVP, and M …

Can contaminated water be rendered safe for nasal saline irrigations?

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To compare sterile water to three methods of sterilization (carbon filtration, boiling, and ultraviolet [UV] light) for preparation of nasal saline irrigants free of bacterial and amebic contaminants. STUDY DESIGN: Bench-top translational research and cost comparison. METHODS: Sterile water was compared to common sterilization methods. Sterile water was contaminated with known concentrations of Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Moraxella catarrhalis, Acinetobacter baumannii, Klebsiella pneumonia, Legionella pneumophila, and Naegleria fowleri. Test samples …

Resistance to cephalosporins and carbapenems in Gram-negative bacterial pathogens.

During the past 15 years, emergence and dissemination of beta-lactam resistance in nosocomial Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii, became a serious problem worldwide. Especially the increasing resistance to 3rd and 4th generation cephalosporins and carbapenems is of particular concern. Gram-negative bacteria pursue various molecular strategies for development of resistance to these antibiotics: (a) generation of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) according to the original definition due to extension of the spectrum of already widely disseminated plasmid…

Pharyngolaryngeal location of Kaposi's sarcoma with airway obstruction in an HIV-negative patient.

Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a human herpes virus-8 (HHV-8)-associated angioproliferative disorder, and its occurrence may be favored by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and iatrogenic immunosuppression. It has also been postulated that a chronic inflammatory disease of the skin can pave the way to its development. KS generally involves mucosal and cutaneous sites, including the head and neck. An oropharyngeal location is quite common, but laryngeal involvement with possible upper airway obstruction and respiratory distress requiring tracheotomy is rare, and no hypopharyngeal locations
