Human Papillomavirus and Genital Warts: A Review of the Evidence for the 2015 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Sexually Transmitted Diseases Treatment Guidelines.

To provide updates for the 2015 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention sexually transmitted diseases treatment guidelines on human papillomavirus (HPV) and anogenital warts (AGWs), a review of the literature was conducted in key topic areas: (1) epidemiology and burden of disease; (2) transmission and natural history; (3) diagnosis and management of AGWs; (4) occupational exposure of healthcare workers; (5) anal cancer screening among men who have sex with men (MSM); and (6) HPV vaccine recommendations. Most sexually active persons will have detectable HPV at least once in their lifetime;

Human papillomavirus-related psychosocial impact of patients with genital warts in China: a hospital-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Genital warts (GW) are the most common sexually transmitted infections. To date, few studies using a human papillomavirus (HPV)-specific questionnaire have focused on the impact of quality of life (QoL) among patients with GW in developing countries. The origins of GW related psychosocial burdens and variations between genders were poorly characterized as well. METHODS: A hospital-based survey was conducted in Beijing and Nanjing of China in 2008. Eligible patients aged 18-65 who had a diagnosis of GW within 3 months were recruited. Demographic information, HPV knowledge, and asse

Expression of Toll-like receptor 9 increases with progression of cervical neoplasia in Tunisian women--a comparative analysis of condyloma, cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and invasive carcinoma.

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are expressed in immune and tumor cells and recognize pathogen-associated molecular patterns. Cervical cancer (CC) is directly linked to a persistent infection with high risk human papillomaviruses (HR-HPVs) and could be associated with alteration of TLRs expression. TLR9 plays a key role in the recognition of DNA viruses and better understanding of this signaling pathway in CC could lead to the development of novel immunotherapeutic approaches. The present study was undertaken to determine the level of TLR9 expression in cervical neoplasias from Tunisian women with

Management of external genital warts.

Genital warts affect 1% of the sexually active U.S. population and are commonly seen in primary care. Human papillomavirus types 6 and 11 are responsible for most genital warts. Warts vary from small, flat-topped papules to large, cauliflower-like lesions on the anogenital mucosa and surrounding skin. Diagnosis is clinical, but atypical lesions should be confirmed by histology. Treatments may be applied by patients, or by a clinician in the office. Patient-applied treatments include topical imiquimod, podofilox, and sinecatechins, whereas clinician-applied treatments include podophyllin, bichl

Human papillomavirus types 6 and 11 seropositivity: risk factors and association with ano-genital warts among homosexual men.

OBJECTIVES: Human papillomavirus (HPV) types 6 and 11 are most commonly associated with ano-genital warts. There are few data on the sero-epidemiology of HPV6 and HPV11 among homosexual men. METHODS: Behavioural data and sera for antibodies to HPV6 and HPV11 capsid protein L1 were collected annually for 1427 HIV negative and 245 HIV positive homosexual men. For HIV negative men, a combined variable, HPV6/11, was created (HPV 6 and/or 11) to analyse predictors of seroprevalence and seroincidence. RESULTS: High rates of HPV6 and HPV11 seroprevalence were found (39.2-53.2% of men). For HPV6/11

Impact of HPV16/18 vaccination on quality of life: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVES: Genital human papillomavirus (HPV) infections and associated precancerous lesions adversely affect health-related quality of life (HRQoL). HPV vaccines provide effective protection against these conditions. We therefore investigated the impact of HPV vaccination on HRQoL in young women five years after participation in a phase III HPV vaccination trial. METHODS: A total of 4808 originally 16- to 17-year-old Finnish girls had participated in the PATRICIA trial and received either bivalent HPV 16/18 vaccine or hepatitis A-virus (HAV) vaccine in 2004 to 2005. Unvaccinated girls (n =

Genital human papillomavirus infection in men: incidence and risk factors in a cohort of university students.

BACKGROUND: In contrast to the wealth of data on human papillomavirus (HPV) infections in women, much less is known about HPV in men. METHODS: Between June 2003 and March 2006, a total of 240 heterosexually active male university students 18-20 years of age were recruited for participation in a cohort study of HPV infection. Genital cell samples were collected, at 4-month intervals, for HPV-DNA analysis by polymerase chain reaction. The subjects maintained a Web-based journal of sexual activity. RESULTS: At 24 months, the cumulative incidence of new infection of any genital HPV type was 62.4

Strategies for fostering HPV vaccine acceptance.

Vaccines that protect against infection with the types of human papillomavirus (HPV) commonly associated with cervical cancer (HPV 16 and 18) and genital warts (HPV 6 and 11) are expected to become available in the near future. Because HPV vaccines are prophylactic, they must be administered prior to exposure to the virus, ideally during preadolescence or adolescence. The young age of the target vaccination population means that physicians, parents, and patients will all be involved in the decision-making process. Research has shown that parents and patients are more likely to accept a vaccine

Seroprevalence of herpes simplex virus type 1 and type 2 in Turkey.

BACKGROUND: Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections are among the most common infectious diseases in humans. The prevalence of herpes simplex viruses type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2) varies widely across the world. HSV-2 infection is the primary cause of genital herpes. It is highly prevalent in human populations in many parts of the world, and is the most common cause of genital ulcer disease worldwide. In spite of the large prevalence and growing incidence of herpes simplex infection (HSV-1 and HSV-2), relatively few data have been published regarding the seroprevalence of herpes simplex infe

Evaluation of genital human papillomavirus infections by polymerase chain reaction among Croatian women.

Infection with specific human papillomavirus (HPV) types is the strongest risk factor in cervical carcinogenesis. In this study we analysed, by means of polymerase chain reaction (PCR), cervical specimens obtained from consenting women with abnormal Pap smears collected from 1996 to 1998. Consensus- and type-specific-primers directed PCR were used in order to detect the presence and to determine the most common HPV types: 6, 11, 16, 18, 31 and 33. Out of 1874 specimens, 1207 (64%) contained one or more HPV types. Approximately half HPVs were typed (621 out of 1207) and the others remained unty

A tale of 2 cities: a comparison of demographic details, source of referral, spectrum of infection and contraceptive practice in patients under 16 years attending genitourinary medicine clinics in London and Swansea.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in young people are increasing, with children aged less than 16 years being particularly vulnerable. We compared the demographic details, spectrum of infection, contraceptive practice and source of referral in patients aged less than 16 years attending 2 genitourinary clinics, one in Swansea and the other in London. In the London population, children aged less than 16 years represented 0.7% of the total new attendances compared with 1.4% in Swansea. The female to male ratio was almost 4:1 in both clinics with most infections confined to female attenders.

Expression of epithelial growth factor receptor and its two ligands, transforming growth factor-alpha and epithelial growth factor, in normal and neoplastic squamous cells in the vulva: an immunohistochemical study.

Epithelial growth factor receptor (EGFR) sends signals to the proliferation signal transduction system, receiving two ligands: epithelial growth factor (EGF) and transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF-alpha). This immunohistochemical study examined the roles of EGFR and its ligands in the proliferation of normal and neoplastic vulvar squamous cells in 25 patients with vulvar squamous cell carcinoma (VSCC), 10 patients with vulvar condyloma acuminata (VCA), 15 patients with vulvar intra-epithelial neoplasm I-II or III (VIN I-II or III), and 5 subjects with vulvar normal squamous cells (VNSC).
