Managing Osteoporosis: A Survey of Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices among Primary Care Physicians in Israel.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disorder characterized by impaired bone quality and microstructural deterioration leading to an increased propensity to fractures. This is a major health problem for older adults, which comprise an increasingly greater proportion of the general population. Due to a large number of patients and the insufficient availability of specialists in Israel and worldwide, osteoporosis is treated in large part by primary care physicians. We assessed the knowledge of primary care physicians on the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis. METHODS: Physician'

Simultaneous Image-Guided Skull Bone Tumor Resection and Reconstruction With a Preconstructed Prosthesis Based on an OsiriX Virtual Resection.

BACKGROUND: Skull reconstruction can be challenging due to the complex 3-dimensional shape of some structures, such as the orbital walls, and for cases involving a large cranial vault. In such situations, computer-assisted design and modeling of prostheses is especially helpful to achieve an adequate reconstruction. Simultaneous tumor resection and skull defect reconstruction are also challenging because the preoperative imaging does not display the anticipated defect. Currently, sophisticated methods based on physical prototypes and templates are required to enable simultaneous resection and

Subtelomeric 6p25 deletion/duplication: Report of a patient with new clinical findings and genotype-phenotype correlations.

The 6p terminal deletions are rare and present variability of clinical features, which increases the importance of reporting additional cases in order to better characterize genotype-phenotype correlations. We report a 12-year-old girl with a de novo deletion in 6p25.1-pter characterized by high-resolution karyotyping and FISH. Further analysis using oligonucleotide array-CGH revealed a 5.06 Mb 6p25.1-pter deletion associated with a contiguous 1 Mb 6p25.1 duplication. The patient presented normal growth, developmental delay, frontal bossing, severe hypertelorism, corectopia, wide and depressed

Second look procedure for large burn defect by banana peel pericranial flap based on one artery.

INTRODUCTION: Scalp and calvarial defects may result from trauma, thermal or electrical burns, resection of benign or malignant tumors, infections or radionecrosis. Reconstruction of large scalp defects is a demanding procedure. The reconstructive "ladder" are applicable to scalp and calvarial defects reconstruction. CASE OUTLINE: A 68-year-old female was admitted to our clinic due to the nine-day old scalp burn wound, incurred under unclear circumstances. Third degree burn wound affected the left frontal-parietal, temporal and part of the occipital region with carbonification of the whole le

Embryotoxic and teratogenic effects of nickel in Swiss albino mice during organogenetic period.

The present study evaluates potential hazardous of nickel (Ni(+2) as NiCl2 ·6H2O) to Swiss albino mice fetus. Ni was administered orally on body weight base from days 6 to 13 of gestation period. Based on LD50, Ni doses (46.125, 92.25, and 184.5) mg Ni/kg b.wt. were used. On day 18 of gestation, uteri of the sacrificed dams were examined. A dose-dependent decrease (P < 0.01) in the body weight of the pregnant females and fetuses during the gestation period was observed. Number of implant sites and placental weight at all the three dose levels was lower compared with their respective control gr

Masticatory tensile developed in upper anterior teeth with chronic apical periodontitis. A finite-element analysis study.

Commonly is accepted that a non-vital tooth has a higher risk of root fracture but there is a relatively little knowledge about the specific biomechanical behavior of non-vital frontal teeth with chronic apical periodontitis. The aim of our study was to evaluate the deformation and tensile generated in these teeth while vertically loading them because it is crucial to assess the moment when the absorbed occlusal forces exceed the elasticity of root dentine. Using the method of finite-element analysis, we highlighted the distribution patterns of the compressive and tension tensile, as well as t

Bipolar duraplasty: a new technique for reducing transcranial cerebral herniation to allow for definitive cranioplasty.

Large, full-thickness calvarial defects cause increased brain tissue compliance, often resulting in transient, transcranial herniation in th … duction allowing for definitive cranioplasty. This new method was used in a patient with a 30-cm(2) frontal bone defect following resection of a right falcine atypical meningioma. In this scenario, bipolar duraplasty was performed free of complication, and the patient has remained asymptomatic and greatly satisfied for 1 year since the procedure. This techniqu …

Osteomalacia caused by skull base tumors: report of 2 cases.

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is an uncommon paraneoplastic syndrome rarely encountered in neurosurgical practice. We report on 2 cases of TIO caused by skull base tumors. Although the diagnosis of TIO is difficult to make and often is delayed because of the insidious nature of the symptoms, mostly systemic pain and weakness, it is curable once it is diagnosed and properly treated. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: Both patients presented with severe pain developing in the lower extremities and moving out to the entire body, as well as difficulty moving. They were diagnosed

Layer-specific activity of tissue non-specific alkaline phosphatase in the human neocortex.

The ectoenzyme tissue non-specific alkaline phosphatase (TNAP) is mostly known for its role in bone mineralization. However, in the severe form of hypophosphatasia, TNAP deficiency also results in epileptic seizures, suggesting a role of this enzyme in brain functions. Accordingly, TNAP activity was shown in the neuropil of the cerebral cortex in diverse mammalian species. However in spite of its clinical significance, the neuronal localization of TNAP has not been investigated in the human brain. By using enzyme histochemistry, we found an unprecedented pattern of TNAP activity appearing as a

Proliferating cells in suborbital tissue drive eye migration in flatfish.

The left/right asymmetry of adult flatfishes (Pleuronectiformes) is remarkable given the external body symmetry of the larval fish. The best … ye is caused by cell proliferation in the suborbital tissue of the blind side and that the twist of frontal bone is dependent on eye migration. The inhibition of cell proliferation in the suborbital area of the blind side by microinjected colchicine was able to prevent eye migration and, thereafter, cranial asymmetry in juvenile Solea senegalensis (right siden …

Treatment of anterior skull base defects by a transnasal endoscopic approach in children.

OBJECT: The object of this study was to assess the efficacy and complications of endoscopic management of anterior skull base defects. METHOD: The authors reviewed the medical records of 28 children (20 boys and 8 girls) undergoing endoscopic repair of anterior skull base defects in their tertiary referral center between 2001 and 2008; 18 cases were congenital and 10 cases posttraumatic. During the endoscopic procedure, rigid telescopes--2.7 or 4 mm in diameter, with 0° or 30° lenses--were used. In 23 patients the anterior skull base defect was sealed with fragments of middle turbinate (bone

Paediatric forearm fractures: functional outcome of conservative treatment.

BACKGROUND: Forearm fractures are common in the paediatric age group. Closed reduction and casting are the primary means of treatment in over 90% of these fractures. Resultant deformities are usually a product of indirect trauma involving angular loading combined with rotational deformity and fragment displacement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospectively, 48 patients aged between 4 to 12 years with forearm fractures, were treated conservatively with closed reduction and a cast during a 2-year period. Functional outcomes were measured in terms of pronation and supination. RESULTS: All fracture

[Custom-designed 3D tibial augmentation for knee replacement].

Reconstruction with the use of custom-made implants aims at optimal replacement of lost or damaged bone structures and restoration of their funkction. In this study the development and construction of a custom-made implant and the operative technique used for the treatment of an extensive tibial defect are described. The patient was a 65-year-old man treated for over 20 years for psoriatic arthritis and severe instability of the right knee, particularly in the frontal plane, with a worsening varus deformity. The radiogram showed an extensive destruction of the medial tibial condyle that also d

Cineradiographic (video X-ray) analysis of skilled reaching in a single pellet reaching task provides insight into relative contribution of body, head, oral, and forelimb movement in rats.

The forelimb movements (skilled reaching) used by rats to reach for a single food pellet to place into the mouth have been used to model many neurological conditions. They have been described as a sequence of oppositions of head-pellet, paw-pellet and pellet-mouth that can be described as movements of the distal portion of body segments in relation to their fixed proximal joints. Movement scoring is difficult, however, because the location and movement of body segments is estimated through the overlying fur and skin, which is pliable and partially obscures movement. Using moderately high-speed
