Decoding gait dynamics from EEG signals presents significant challenges due to the complex spatial dependencies of motor processes, the need for accurate temporal and spectral feature extraction, and the scarcity of high-quality gait EEG datasets. To address these issues, we propose EEG2GAIT, a novel hierarchical graph-based model that captures multi-level spatial embeddings of EEG channels using a Hierarchical Graph Convolutional Network (GCN) Pyramid. To further improve decoding performance, we introduce a Hybrid Temporal-Spectral Reward (HTSR) loss function, which integrates time-domain, fr

In medical image analysis, accurately diagnosing complex lesions remains a formidable challenge, especially for thyroid disorders, which exhibit high incidence and intricate pathology. To enhance diagnostic precision and robustness, we assembled ThyM3, a large-scale multimodal dataset comprising thyroid computed tomography and ultrasound images. Building on this resource, we introduce ThyFusionNet, a novel deep-learning architecture that combines convolutional backbones with transformer modules and performs feature-level fusion to exploit complementary cues across modalities. To improve semant

Deep neural networks enriched with structural information have been widely employed for facial expression recognition tasks. However, these methods often depend on hierarchical information rather than face property to finish expression recognition. In this paper, we propose a cross-modal network with strong biological and structural information for facial expression recognition (CMNet). CMNet can respectively learn expression information via face symmetry on a whole face, left and right half faces to extract complementary facial features. To prevent negative effect of biological and structural

The rapid expansion of biological data in recent decades has highlighted the need for efficient methods in sequence analysis. Traditional pairwise alignment approaches are both time-consuming and memory-intensive. Alignment-free (AF) methods such as natural vector (NV) and k-mer operate on a one-dimensional framework, interpreting DNA primarily as a linear string of nucleotides. To achieve a more comprehensive interpretation of molecular structure, this study incorporates the three-dimensional architectural features of DNA and introduces a novel AF method named Multi-perspective natural vector

MOTIVATION: AlphaFold has transformed structural biology with an unprecedented accuracy in modelling protein structures and their interactions with biomolecules, with AlphaFold3 (AF3) achieving state-of-the-art performance. However, AF3 and other methods often struggle to accurately predict the structure of protein complexes that lack strong co-evolutionary information, such as antibody-antigen (Ab-Ag) complexes. One of the fundamental issues is that AF3 often generates accurate predictions, but fails to reliably distinguish them from the much larger set of incorrect ones.
RESULTS: To address

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) requires effective and personalized brace treatment strategies to prevent progression and the potential need for surgery. However, monitoring and prediction of the spinal column deformities during bracing is not always possible. Relying only on traditional methods or clinicians' experience may pose a complex challenge in orthopedic care, as unique biological characteristics of each patient make it difficult to decide on the optimal spinal brace treatment. This study introduces a comprehensive biomechanical modeling approach utilizing finite element analysi

The surgical bone drilling process is unavoidable in orthopedic, traumatological and dental applications for screw, plate and implant placement procedures. The mechanical and thermal effects generated during this process have a direct impact on both surgical success and post-operative recovery. The high axial forces, torque, and local temperature increases that occur during drilling can lead to serious clinical complications such as microcrack formation, thermal necrosis, implant loosening, and delayed bone healing. Therefore, optimizing the cutting tool geometry in bone drilling processes is

Clinical time series data from electronic health records and medical registries offer unprecedented opportunities to understand patient trajectories and inform medical decision-making. However, leveraging such data presents significant challenges due to irregular sampling, complex latent physiology, and inherent uncertainties in both measurements and disease progression. To address these challenges, we propose a generative modeling framework based on latent neural stochastic differential equations (SDEs) that views clinical time series as discrete-time partial observations of an underlying con

Time-varying confounding complicates the causal survival analysis for longitudinal data. Traditional survival models that adjust for time-dependent covariates fail to estimate the intervention causal effect unbiasedly. The Structural Nested Accelerated Failure Time Model (SNAFTM) can address this challenge effectively. This model estimates the intervention causal effect as the acceleration factor of the survival time while controlling for the time-varying confounders. However, the SNAFTM model usually relies on the G-estimation, which lacks power and suffers from computational burden, especial

Halide perovskite memdiodes have coupled ionic-electronic dynamics and are promising candidates for artificial synapses in neuromorphic computing. We provide an in silico neuromorphic circuit that includes a comprehensive perovskite memdiode model and confirm its synaptic plasticity repertoire through simulation-based validation. The proposed model recapitulates analog long-term potentiation/depression (LTP/LTD), spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP), spike-rate-dependent plasticity (SRDP), and paired-pulse facilitation/depression (PPF/PPD). We also describe pulse-amplitude- and pulse-width

Ophthalmic diagnosis relies heavily on the interpretation of fundus images to identify a range of debilitating diseases. However, the presence of multiple, co-existing pathologies and the subtle visual cues associated with early-stage disease pose a significant challenge, necessitating the development of advanced diagnostic tools. We present DFD-Net (Dual-Branch Fundus Deep Learning Network), a deep learning solution that performs multi-label classification of various ocular diseases. The system achieves this by integrating the attribute maps from bilateral retinal photographs, like those from

Precise prediction of upcoming gait signals, especially over an extended time scale like the entire gait cycle, is crucial. During this period, devices or gait retraining programs can respond to dynamic changes while considering multiple factors in the neurological and musculoskeletal systems. This enables effective adjustments, ultimately optimising outcomes based on the unique rehabilitation goals. However, current state-of-the-art models, whether driven by physical modelling or data modelling approaches, are constrained by short prediction time scales, limited accuracy, and high computation

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer's profound molecular and phenotypic heterogeneity hinders precision therapy. Delineating tumor microenvironment (TME) heterogeneity enables improved prognosis and tailored treatment strategies. In this study, we propose a Multi-step Multi-modality Ensemble Survival (MMES) model for gastric cancer prognosis based on HE-stained histological images and multiplex immunohistochemistry (mIHC) data.
METHODS: The MMES model employs a multi-step approach to decompose the complex overall survival (OS) prediction task into smaller, manageable subtasks, enabling the use of ligh

Polysorbate 20 (PS20) is commonly used as an excipient in therapeutic protein formulations. However, over the course of a therapeutic protein product's shelf life, minute amounts of co-purified host-cell lipases may cause slow hydrolysis of PS20, releasing fatty acids (FAs). These FAs may precipitate to form subvisible particles that can be detected and imaged by various techniques, e.g., flow imaging microscopy (FIM). Images of particles can then be classified using supervised convolutional neural networks (CNNs). However, CNNs should be trained on representative images of particles which, as

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a leading cause of dementia worldwide, characterized by heterogeneous neuropathological changes and progressive cognitive decline. Despite the numerous studies, there are still no effective treatments beyond those that aim to slow progression and compensate the impairment. Neuroimaging techniques provide a comprehensive view of brain changes, with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) playing a key role due to its non-invasive nature and wide availability. The T1-weighted MRI sequence is frequently used due to its prevalence in most MRI protocols, generating large datase

Aortic stenosis (AS) is a prevalent heart valve disease that requires accurate and timely diagnosis for effective treatment. Current methods for automated AS severity classification rely on black-box deep learning techniques, which suffer from a low level of trustworthiness and hinder clinical adoption. To tackle this challenge, we propose ProtoASNet, a prototype-based neural network designed to classify the severity of AS from B-mode echocardiography videos. ProtoASNet bases its predictions exclusively on the similarity scores between the input and a set of learned spatio-temporal prototypes,
