Styloid process elongation and calcification in subjects with tmd: clinical and radiographic aspects.

Knowledge of the Eagle's syndrome shows that its symptoms can be very easily confused with other types of craniomandibular disorders, especially temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The aim of this study was to find a possible correlation between the presence of TMD and elongation of the styloid process as well relate to presence of calcification of the stilohyoid chain. Fifty patients with TMD, confirmed from the RDC/TMD, were examined clinically and radiographically. Radiographic documentation consisted of digital panoramic radiograph and digital lateral cephalometric radiograph. Radiocef soft

Lecythophora hoffmannii isolated from a case of canine osteomyelitis in Japan.

A 2-year-old spayed female mongrel dog showed claudication with abnormal ossification containing fungal cells detected by biopsy. The dog was treated with ketoconazole and itraconazole perorally for 5 months; however, the osteomyelitis became aggravated, and an amputation from the scapula was performed. The right superficial cervical lymph node became swollen 5 months after the operation. The lymph node contained PAS positive fungal elements and a portion of tissue produced mycelial fungal growth on potato dextrose agar supplemented with chloramphenicol. The culture was identified as Lecythoph

Cyclops and cyclopoid formation after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: clinical and histomorphological differences.

Prospectively, 119 patients were pursued clinically and by follow-up-arthroscopy for the occurrence of a "cyclops syndrome" after ACL reconstruction with a patellar tendon autograft, augmented by LAD. Twenty-one patients showed nodular formations. Ten of these (group 1) developed early clinical evidence of a "cyclops syndrome" with a mean extension deficit of 19 degrees before follow-up-arthroscopy, on average 5.9 months after the index operation. The nodular formations found and excised during débridement had a hard consistency. Histomorphological undecalcified microtome section evaluation of

Spinal hamartomas: a distinct clinical entity.

OBJECT: Congenital spinal hamartomas are defined as tumors of well-differentiated mature elements situated in an abnormal location. In this report, the authors document the clinical and pathological features of spinal hamartomas in 10 patients. METHODS: Ten patients presented with midline dorsal malformations at birth, initially diagnosed as teratomas or myelomeningoceles. The locations of the masses were variable: two were located in the thoracic region, four at the thoracolumbar junction, two in the lumbar region, one at the lumbosacral junction, and one in the sacral region. The results of

Nerve Growth Factor Gene Delivery via Nanosphere-Hydrogel Composites and Tendon-Bone Interface Healing in a Rat Rotator Cuff Tear Model.

BACKGROUND: Rotator cuff repair (RCR) often fails because of poor tendon-bone interface (TBI) healing. Nerve growth factor (NGF) has been shown to regulate tenocyte function and promote regeneration, but it lacks sufficient systematic research, limiting its clinical translation. PURPOSE: To evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of NGF-encoding plasmid (pNGF) for TBI healing in a rat acute rotator cuff tear (RCT) model, delivered via nanosphere-hydrogel (NP-GEL) composites. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. METHODS: We performed physicochemical characterization of pNGF-loaded NP-GEL (mo

Time is of the Essence! Long-Term Functional, Motor and Sensory Outcomes After Surgical Fixation of Pediatric Medial Epicondyle Fractures: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Medial epicondyle fractures represent a common pediatric elbow injury, yet a definitive consensus on treatment remains absent. In literature, long-term sensory and motor outcomes after surgical fixation remain underreported. Existing studies predominantly focus on short-term and mid-term results, with limited objective assessment of strength and sensibility. OBJECTIVES: The primary aim of this study was to evaluate long-term functional, sensory and motor outcomes in patients who underwent surgical fixation for pediatric medial epicondyle fractures. The secondary aim was to examine

Surgical treatment and outcomes of trans-ulnar basal coronoid fracture-dislocations.

BACKGROUND: Trans-ulnar fracture-dislocations of the elbow are complex injuries that can be difficult to classify and treat. Trans-ulnar basal coronoid injuries, in which the coronoid is not attached to either the olecranon or the metaphysis, present substantial challenges to achieve anatomic reduction and stable internal fixation. The purpose of this study was to analyze the outcome of surgical treatment of trans-ulnar basal coronoid fracture-dislocations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 2002 and 2019, 32 consecutive trans-ulnar basal coronoid fracture-dislocations underwent open reduction an

Complications associated with internal fixation of high-energy bicondylar tibial plateau fractures utilizing a two-incision technique.

OBJECTIVES: Single incision open reduction and double plate fixation of complex tibial plateau fractures has been associated with high wound complication rates. Minimally invasive methods have been recommended to decrease the wound complication rates as compared with open techniques. Additionally, laterally applied fixed-angle devices appear to minimize late varus deformity without the need for additional medial stabilization. Accurate reduction of comminuted lateral and/or medial articular surfaces, however, often requires visualization through an open reduction. This study reports the compli

Closed reduction and percutaneous fixation of anterior column acetabular fractures.

OBJECTIVE: The current standard treatment of anterior column acetabular fractures includes formal open reduction with internal fixation (ORIF) through a variety of anterior approaches. These approaches have been associated with significant blood loss, infection, lengthy operative times, and neurovascular complications. It therefore seems reasonable to consider less invasive alternatives to conventional treatment methods. A technique for percutaneous reduction and fixation of a particular acetabular fracture pattern is presented. Execution of this technique has been facilitated by the use of im

Localized chondro-ossification underlies joint dysfunction and motor deficits in the Fkbp10 mouse model of osteogenesis imperfecta.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a genetic disorder that features wide-ranging defects in both skeletal and nonskeletal tissues. Previously, we and others reported that loss-of-function mutations in FK506 Binding Protein 10 (FKBP10) lead to skeletal deformities in conjunction with joint contractures. However, the pathogenic mechanisms underlying joint dysfunction in OI are poorly understood. In this study, we have generated a mouse model in which Fkbp10 is conditionally deleted in tendons and ligaments. Fkbp10 removal substantially reduced telopeptide lysyl hydroxylation of type I procollagen a

Closed Reduction Technique for Severely Displaced Radial Neck Fractures in Children.

BACKGROUND: The described technique is useful for achieving closed reduction of severely displaced (i.e., Judet Type-III and IV) pediatric radial neck fractures. It is widely agreed that radial neck fractures with angulation of >30° should be reduced. Various maneuvers have been described, but none uniformly achieves complete reduction in severely displaced radial neck fractures (Types III and IV)1-4. The aim of the present technique is to achieve closed reduction in these severely displaced radial neck fractures without surgical instrumentation. DESCRIPTION: A stepwise approach is described.

Social and clinical impact of COVID-19 on patients with fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, is a severe inflammatory condition. Patients with pre-existing conditions including diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease are at particularly high risk of complications. Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is an ultra-rare and debilitating genetic disorder that is characterized by a pro-inflammatory state, which leads to progressive heterotopic ossification and complications after trauma, including intramuscular vaccinations. To better understand the impact of COVID-19 on patients with FOP, we first examined the social
