Dissociable patterns of neural activity during response inhibition in depressed adolescents with and without suicidal behavior.

OBJECTIVES: Impaired attentional control and behavioral control are implicated in adult suicidal behavior. Little is known about the functional integrity of neural circuitry supporting these processes in suicidal behavior in adolescence. METHOD: Functional magnetic resonance imaging was used in 15 adolescent suicide attempters with a history of major depressive disorder (ATTs), 15 adolescents with a history of depressive disorder but no suicide attempt (NATs), and 14 healthy controls (HCs) during the performance of a well-validated go-no-go response inhibition and motor control task that meas

Association of a polymorphism near CREB1 with differential aversion processing in the insula of healthy participants.

CONTEXT: Previous functional neuroimaging studies have identified a network of brain regions that process aversive stimuli, including anger. A polymorphism near the cyclic adenosine monophosphate response element binding protein gene (CREB1) has recently been associated with greater self-reported effort at anger control as well as risk for antidepressant treatment-emergent suicidality in men with major depressive disorder, but its functional effects have not been studied. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether this genetic variant is associated with altered brain processing of and behavioral avoidan

Interaction of catechol O-methyltransferase and serotonin transporter genes modulates effective connectivity in a facial emotion-processing circuitry.

Imaging genetic studies showed exaggerated blood oxygenation level-dependent response in limbic structures in carriers of low activity alleles of serotonin transporter-linked promoter region (5-HTTLPR) as well as catechol O-methyltransferase (COMT) genes. This was suggested to underlie the vulnerability to mood disorders. To better understand the mechanisms of vulnerability, it is important to investigate the genetic modulation of frontal-limbic connectivity that underlies emotional regulation and control. In this study, we have examined the interaction of 5-HTTLPR and COMT genetic markers on

Incentive-elicited mesolimbic activation and externalizing symptomatology in adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Opponent-process theories of externalizing disorders (ExD) attribute them to some combination of overactive reward processing systems and/or underactive behavior inhibition systems. Reward processing has been indexed by recruitment of incentive-motivational neurocircuitry of the ventral striatum (VS), including nucleus accumbens (NAcc). METHODS: We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with an incentive task to determine whether externalizing symptomatology in adolescence is correlated with an enhanced VS recruitment by cues for rewards, or by deliveries of rewards. DSCAM is differentially patterned along the optic axon pathway in the developing Xenopus visual system and guides axon termination at the target.

BACKGROUND: The Xenopus retinotectal circuit is organized topographically, where the dorsal-ventral axis of the retina maps respectively on to the ventral-dorsal axis of the tectum; axons from the nasal-temporal axis of the retina project respectively to the caudal-rostral axis of the tectum. Studies throughout the last two decades have shown that mechanisms involving molecular recognition of proper termination domains are at work guiding topographic organization. Such studies have shown that graded distribution of molecular cues is important for topographic mapping. However, the complement of

The heart point sign: a bedside ultrasound marker of left-sided pneumothorax in critically ill patients-a case series.

BACKGROUND: Pneumothorax is a potentially life-threatening complication in critically ill patients. Lung ultrasound (LUS) is highly accurate for bedside diagnosis, with the lung point sign being specific for pneumothorax. A variant, the heart point sign, has been described in isolated case reports as a marker of left-sided pneumothorax, but its clinical relevance remains incompletely understood. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed intensive care unit cases at Sanatorio Los Arcos (Buenos Aires, Argentina) from January 2018 to July 2024. Patients were included if the heart point sign was docum

Prior knowledge of normal ECGs enhances accuracy in ECG interpretation among medical students.

Electrocardiograms (ECGs) are frequently misdiagnosed, with potentially serious consequences, yet evidence for effective teaching strategies remains limited. Eye-tracking offers insight into the perceptual processes behind accurate interpretation. We conducted an eye-tracking study among medical students to assess whether priming with normal ECGs improves diagnostic accuracy. We hypothesized that participants viewing normal ECGs before interpreting unknown ECGs would perform more accurately. This between-subjects priming study presented students with one of three image types before an ECG task

Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a chronic cholestatic disease marked by fibrosis, strictures, and a high risk for developing cholangiocarcinoma (CCC). Recognition of CCC in PSC remains a diagnostic challenge. PET/CT using fibroblast activation protein inhibitors (FAPI) has emerged as a promising imaging modality in CCC, but its potential in the specific profibrotic setting of PSC has not yet been explored to the best of our knowledge. Methods: PET/CT with 68Ga-FAPI-46 was performed in 18 patients (n = 9 with PSC, without proven CCC; n = 7 without PSC, with histologically confirmed CCC;

Axonal regeneration from CNS neurons in the cerebellum and brainstem of adult rats: correlation with the patterns of expression and distribution of messenger RNAs for L1, CHL1, c-jun and growth-associated protein-43.

Some neurons in the brain and spinal cord will regenerate axons into a living peripheral nerve graft inserted at the site of injury, others will not. We have examined the patterns of expression of four molecules thought to be involved in developmental and regenerative axonal growth, in the cerebellum and brainstem of adult rats, following the implantation into the cerebellum of peripheral nerve grafts. We also determined how the expression patterns observed correlate with the abilities of neurons in these regions to regenerate axons. Three days to 16 weeks after insertion of living tibial nerv

Mirror-view reverses somatoparaphrenia: dissociation between first- and third-person perspectives on body ownership.

Right-hemisphere stroke can lead to the somatoparaphrenic delusion that parts of one's own body belong to someone else. To our knowledge, no previous study has experimentally assessed the sense of body part ownership in somatoparaphrenic patients when they see the body from a third-person perspective, as in a mirror. In alternating trials, we provided either direct first-person perspective vision of the arms, or indirect third-person perspective vision via a mirror in the frontal plane. We tested body ownership in these conditions in five patients with right-hemisphere lesions with left hemipl
