Protocol for a prospective cohort study for the assessment of sarcopenia in gestational diabetes: the SiGnal-D study.

INTRODUCTION: Sarcopenia is characterised by loss of muscle mass and strength. Although ageing is the most likely risk factor of sarcopenia, sarcopenia is prevalent even in non-elderly people. Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a risk factor for sarcopenia, as T2D shares with sarcopenia several aetiological factors. Meanwhile, gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is characterised by metabolic alterations that resemble those observed in T2D, including increased insulin resistance (present even in physiologic pregnancies). Hence, GDM presents two major risk factors for sarcopenia, that is, dysglycaemia and

Intra-articular sacroiliac joint steroid injection in patients with risk factors may have greater effect.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is highly prevalent, with the sacroiliac joint (SIJ) implicated in up to ∼30 % of cases. Intra-articular steroid injections are an established treatment for SIJ pain. Several risk factors-including lumbosacral fusion, total hip arthroplasty, pelvic fracture, inflammatory bowel disease, and seronegative spondyloarthropathy-are known to predispose patients to SIJ pain. However, it remains unclear whether these preconditions predict treatment response. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the presence of known SIJ pain risk factors correlates with improved patient-repo

Psychosocial factors associated with pain in spinal cord injury: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord injury (SCI) affects over 20 million people worldwide, and pain is the most prevalent secondary condition with substantial psychosocial consequences. However, evidence on these consequences remains fragmented, limiting theoretical and practical integration. The aim of this study was to synthesise evidence on associations between pain intensity and psychosocial outcomes in adults with chronic SCI. METHODS: CINAHL, Embase, PubMed, and Web of Science were searched from inception to 8 March 2026. Peer-reviewed studies were included if they reported associations between pai

Rationale and design of a prospective cohort study and biobank of the offspring born to mothers with a solid organ transplant: protocol for the TransplantLines Next Generation study.

INTRODUCTION: Successful pregnancies with healthy newborns have been reported after all types of solid organ transplantation (SOT). Limited data in young children suggest similar development and health compared with the general population. However, fetal development may be influenced by factors such as immunosuppressive medication and the increased incidence of pregnancy complications, and forthcoming health problems may only become apparent later in the life of the offspring. To allow for better investigation of the long-term health of offspring born after SOT, we designed the Transplantlines

Autism and Self-Esteem: A Systematic Review Quantifying Differences Between Autistic and Non-Autistic Adolescents and Investigating Associations With Mental Health Difficulties.

Autistic individuals are at increased risk of developing mental health difficulties. Self-esteem has been found to be a significant indicator of mental health in the general population yet remains underexplored in autistic adolescents. This review aimed to explore rates of low self-esteem in autistic versus non-autistic adolescents (10-19 years of age) and examine the relationship between self-esteem and mental health symptomatology. A comprehensive literature search was conducted across four databases to identify relevant studies published until March 2025. The systematic review included 30 s

Protocol for the Parent Anxiety Transmission and Habits (PATH) study: a randomised controlled trial testing parent interpretation bias as a key mechanism of intergenerational transmission of anxiety.

INTRODUCTION: Anxiety disorders are the most common youth mental health problems in the USA. Most children do not receive treatment and among the few who do, many do not experience significant improvement. Thus, there is an urgent need to identify novel intervention targets to improve treatments for childhood anxiety. Past research demonstrates that parent anxiety plays a role in the development and maintenance of child anxiety, but empirical evidence for the mechanisms that drive this transmission is lacking. Interpretation bias, or the tendency to perceive threat in ambiguous situations, may

Impact of vitamin D supplementation on preterm births and premature rupture of membranes: a study protocol for a double-blind randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Preterm birth (PTB) is a major adverse outcome in developing countries, including India, with serious adverse consequences. Although the pathophysiology is not fully understood, maternal biomarkers influencing placental function may contribute to premature rupture of membranes and PTB. Vitamin D₃ supplementation during pregnancy may lower the risk of PTB, particularly in populations with a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency (~90% in India). However, available biomarkers for PTB prediction are non-confirmatory, costly and not part of routine care. The aim of the study is to e

Mathematical skills in deaf and hard-of-hearing children: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Mathematical competencies are essential for both academic achievement and everyday functioning. Research investigating mathematical skills in deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) individuals has produced heterogeneous findings, indicating domain-specific performance patterns and the influence of linguistic and cognitive factors. Recent evidence further suggests that these differences may emerge early in development. This systematic review aims to evaluate mathematical competencies in DHH individuals and to contextualize their mathematical profile in relation to developmental dyscalculi

HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Use Among South Asian Sexual Minority Men in the United States: Pilot Web-Based Survey Study.

BACKGROUND: South Asian American gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM) experience multiple minority stressors, such as internalized homophobia, racial prejudice, and homonegative discrimination, thereby elevating their risk of HIV. Due to the scarcity of HIV scientific literature focusing on South Asian American GBM, little is known about their use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) or the upstream factors influencing its uptake. OBJECTIVE: This study seeks to address this gap by describing PrEP use history among South Asian American GBM and comparing PrEP users and nonuser

Differential Effects of Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation on Mood and Pain Symptoms in People With Chronic Pain and Major Depressive Disorders-A Review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Chronic pain and major depressive disorder (MDD) are among the most prevalent and disabling conditions globally, often co-occurring and sharing overlapping symptoms such as fatigue, cognitive dysfunction and mood disturbances. While fibromyalgia, a primary pain syndrome, and MDD have distinct clinical manifestations, their comorbidity presents therapeutic challenges. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), a non-invasive neuromodulation technique, has shown efficacy in treating both pain and mood disorders when targeted at specific brain regions (motor co

Are There Definite Disease Subsets in Polymyalgia Rheumatica? Suggestions from a Narrative Review.

Background: Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) has a multifaceted onset and course, and making a distinction between true PMR and so-called "polymyalgic syndrome" (that is, similar manifestations caused by different conditions) is far from easy in clinical practice. The existence of subsets within true PMR may further complicate the diagnostic question. Distinguishing PMR subsets from PMR-mimicking conditions does not just carry nomenclature value and speculative significance. Indeed, the correct diagnosis influences treatment, prognosis, epidemiological assessments, and health policies. Objectives:

Effects of body mass index on gastric motility: Comparing children with functional abdominal pain disorders and healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: Overweight children exhibit a higher prevalence of functional gastrointestinal disorders compared with their normal-weight peers, yet the underlying reasons remain unclear. Gastrointestinal motility, a key pathophysiological factor in functional gastrointestinal disorders, may be influenced by body mass index (BMI). AIM: To evaluate the impact of BMI on gastric motility parameters in children with functional abdominal pain disorders (FAPDs). METHODS: We assessed gastric motility in 176 children with FAPDs (61.4% females, mean age 7.94 years, SD 1.96 years) and 63 healthy controls

The use of a computer-based program focused on the syllabic method to support early literacy in children with cochlear implants.

BACKGROUND: Children with cochlear implants (CIs) often lag behind children with normal hearing (NH) in early literacy skills. Furthermore, the development of language skills associated with their emergent literacy skills seems to depend on good auditory access. Supporting language acquisition and early literacy in children with CIs may prevent difficulties in primary school. The use of technology may facilitate auditory and speech recovery in children with CIs, but evidence on computer-based early literacy programs is limited. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates (a) the effects of a computer-

Towards women's digital health equity: A qualitative inquiry into attitude and adoption of reproductive mHealth services in Bangladesh.

Health equity in Bangladesh faces a large chasm over the economic conditions, socio-cultural factors and geographic location despite the push for digitalization of the health sector. While some research has been conducted assessing the viability of digital health solutions in Bangladesh, gender dynamics of digital healthcare have been absent. This study dived into healthcare equity for women with a focus on reproductive health services delivered through mobile devices. This paper reported the findings of a qualitative study employing in-depth interviews conducted among 26 women about their beh

Integrating evidence and causal mapping of help-seeking behaviour of migrant women with postpartum depression in Shanghai, China: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: The estimated prevalence of postpartum depression (PPD) worldwide, in China, and Shanghai is 17.2%, 18.0% and 23.2%, respectively. In 2021, Shanghai housed a population of 3.2 million childbearing-age migrant women, most of whom migrated to the city with their husbands for economic reasons. There is a general lack of help-seeking behaviour for mental disorders in China due to the perceived risk of social stigmatisation. In Shanghai, 70% of women did not seek professional help for perinatal mental health problems. We aim to gather information from multiple perspectives, such as th

Is sarcopenia a risk factor for reduced diaphragm function following hepatic resection? A study protocol for a prospective observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Sarcopenia is associated with reduced pulmonary function in healthy adults, as well as with increased risk of pneumonia following abdominal surgery. Consequentially, postoperative pneumonia prolongs hospital admission, and increases in-hospital mortality following a range of surgical interventions. Little is known about the function of the diaphragm in the context of sarcopenia and wasting disorders or how its function is influenced by abdominal surgery. Liver surgery induces reactive pleural effusion in most patients, compromising postoperative pulmonary function. We hypothesise
