BACKGROUND: In 1998, we revealed a sequence departing from prenatal growth restraint in girls and evolving, through precocious pubarche (PP) in mid-childhood, towards anovulatory and hyperinsulinaemic hyperandrogenism. The latter condition fulfilled the criteria for the diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which was then defined independently of the presence of polycystic ovaries (PCOs). Based on clinical features alone, pyogenic granuloma can be difficult to differentiate from a peripheral giant cell granuloma, a more aggressive oral lesion that could have consequences such as teeth displacement and alveolar bone resorption. A thorough clinical and radiographic examination is important to determine whether teeth and/or bone are involved. Furthermore, the early onset of puberty in females may increase the prevalence of pyogenic granuloma at a young age.

Adrenarche is the puberty of the adrenal gland. The descriptive term pubarche indicates the appearance of pubic hair, which may be accompanied by axillary hair. This process is considered premature if it occurs before age 8 yr in girls and 9 yr in boys. The chief hormonal product of adrenarche is dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and its sulfated product DHEA-S. The present study evaluated the FSH and LH episodic discharge in different physiopathological conditions undergoing chronic GnRH-agonist administration. Four girls with true precocious puberty and five postmenopausal women were administered GnRH-agonist (3.73 leuprolide acetate every 4 weeks; Takeda Italia, Rome, Italy) for at least 4 months. Plasma LH and FSH secretory profiles were assessed before and under GnRH-agonist administration (after 21 and 120 days). Pulsatility studies were conducted for 4 h in the girls and for 6 h in postmenopausal women, with blood sampling intervals of 10 min.

Statural growth, physical and skeletal development of a girl with pseudohypoparathyroidism and primary hypothyroidism were analysed in a longitudinal study, which lasted for 12 years from the age of 0.8 years. Report on the successful treatment of pubertal gynecomastia with the synthetic steroid preparation Danazol. In 15 male adolescents, 11 to 18 years old, Danazol in an average dose of 8 to 10 mg/kg/day, administered orally over 2 to 3 months, achieved a very good or good reduction of breast tissue. 4 patients showed a palpable but insufficient regression. Side-effects of the treatment were rare and clinically negligible. The mechanism of the hormonal action of the gonadotropin inhibiting steroid Danazol in gynecomastia cannot be explained by the hormone findings available so far.

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of growth hormone (GH) treatment on ovarian and uterine morphology and function in short, prepubertal small-for-gestational-age (SGA) girls.
DESIGN: A multinational, randomized controlled trial on safety and efficacy of GH therapy in short, prepubertal children born SGA.
SETTING: Not applicable.
PATIENT(S): A subgroup of 18 Danish girls born SGA included in North European SGA Study (NESGAS).
INTERVENTION(S): One year of GH treatment (67 μg/kg/day) followed by 2 years of randomized GH treatment (67 μg/kg/day, 35 μg/kg/day, or IGF-I titrated).
